Chances for honors program?

I have a 4.0 weighted GPA (mid-year, 3.93 now), 1410 SAT (720M, 690V, 690W.) I am in-state, my mom is an alumni and current employee (so I have tuition remission.) My EC's are probably around average. Also, I took a class at UMD last summer and am graduating after three years of high school.

Anyway, what do you think my chances are to get into the honors program? I really want to do it, and if I got into it, I would almost definetely attend UMCP. Thank you for any responses.

haha you will def get honors, perhaps even gemstone.

Your stats are good. Your GPA is very fine but there will be a number of kids with higher weighted GPA's and they will also have great SAT's like you have.
However, few of them will have taken a class at UMD or be graduating in 3 instead of 4 years.

They look at the whole picture. They will look at your recs, ec's and essays.
I have known of kids with very good SAT's that got into scholars but not honors because the rest of the package was not there.

However, your overall package looks really good..its just not something I would take for granted.
As far as Gemstones goes..that is research oriented and determined by scores and essay answers..

As far as your mom being a graduate..this should help with admissions as you are a legacy but I dont think it would have anything to do with if you get invited to honors or not.

The fact that you are graduating early, are instate, took a class at UMD etc..are all in your favor. And you have great stats!

My hunch would be you will be invited to honors. Good luck and let us know how you do!

My daughter was invited to honors and her SAT was lower than yours..her weighted GPA was higher and she had excellent recs and ec's. I can remember screaming and jumping up and down when we read the invitiation online!
She absolutely loves UMD and the honors program!

Okay, thank you for your response.

My GPA is low because of 9th grade (many C's that year.) I took the hardest classes possible, with 7 AP's in my first three years, so that is why my WGPA is so much higher than my unweighted (like 3.35.) Basically, I know my GPA isn't very high, and I'm sort of worried that that will prevent me from getting into honors.

Also, I don't have a lot of EC's, but some of them do involve competing in University of Maryland competitions in Math/Programming, so I think that might help.

As for Gemstones, I do not really want to do it, and I'm fairly sure I won't anyway because of my niche answers. Anyway, thank you for your response, and I guess I will find out for sure if I get in by February.

I dont think your GPA will prevent you from getting in honors. As I said my daughters SAT was not super high and it did not prevent her from getting in. She did have a very high GPA though and lots of service etc.

At the time she had taken the hardest course work she could in high school and though I felt she deserved honors, I figured the school was so huge they would just not truly look at each student.

But they do and they did!

In your case they will see that you have an excellent SAT and that you are graduating early. Then they will look at your EC's and recs etc. They will see that your GPA is good..and likely you have really worked at hard classes.

They will also consider your responses to the questions.
So they really will look at you and take in the whole picture when they make their decision.

Good luck and please let us know.
