Michigan is a reach. Both your GPA and SAT are below average by Michigan standards. Definitely raise that SAT by 100 points and do very well your first semester and then I think you'd have a fair shot.

hmm i agree, but wat score will they look at more math or cr?
Also i do recall Umich having an affirmative action law suit. will that hurt my acceptance chances because i am Indian?

What's really going to hurt your chances is your GPA. Your SAT Math should improve to the mid 600s at least and that's not too difficult to do. However, your GPA is significantly lower than the mid 50% range (3.7-4.0) at Michigan.

i dont know it this makes a difference but the school i go to is highly competitve and challenging. APs and honors are recommened courses only and only a small handful (maybe 5 kids) have 4 GPA's. I read other posts and saw that many kids put down challenging or elite school, but i am dead serious when i say that my school is challenging.

There is a big difference between 3.3 and 4.0. A 3.6 GPA would have been good enough assuming your school is well known to Michigan and your SAT Math improves by 100 points. One way for you to check your chances would be to see how many students from your school with sub 3.4 GPAs get into Michigan.

how can i do that? would i have to ask my school for that info? o also apparently 49 ppl from my grade of 114 people are applying. Wat does Umich do in a situation like that.

It is difficult to get the information you seek. Michigan is definitely a reach for you. Even if your school is very tough, your SAT is also below the mean. However, you do have a chance, so apply. To be on the safe side, also apply to MSU and Indiana. Both are good schools with excellent Business programs.

Yeah, michigan is a reach...even if you school is awesome. However, its definately worth a shot. Being indian won't hurt or help you, since asians are not considered an urm here.

wats urm? also is there any advantage i may have over any other student(s)?

under represtented minority i believe

do i even have a shot? i'm , i know kinda late but i wanted to know what my chances were
SAT 1980 (1270 out of 1600)
GPA - 3.55 unweighted
UM GPA - 3.7 (if i calculated correctly)
ACT-27
will it help or hurt to apply to Kineis?
please give me feed back ... and be honest

hey man get ur own thread...

jk

but u look like u may have a higher change then me

lvp, your GPA is good, but your SAT will hurt you. The mean SAT at mich is 1380 and im sure this year it will break into the 1400's. I suggest you retake your SAT and score 1350+.

A2Wolves applied to kines and wasn't accepted and he had very good stats for an instate student. I wouldn't apply to kines because supposedly its full of sports recruits who get all the spots.

how does one figure out their umich gpa?

Only count "core academic classes" (like English, Math, History, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Economics and Foreign Languages) that you took Sophomore and Junior years. The, assign 4.0 to all As (A-, A and A+), 3.0 to all Bs (B-, B and B+), 2.0 to all Cs (C-, C and C+) etc...

N.B: Freshman grades will not be factored in and AP or honors classes are not given extra weight. That does not mean that Michigan will not closely scrutinize your chourse selection, because it will, but it does not attach any additional weight to AP or honors classes.

So does that mean if you have above a 90% in all of your core classes for those years your UM gpa is 4.0?

If at your school, a 90% is an A-, yes, your Michigan GPA would be a 4.0.

wow that's awesome

oh and to comment on a previous post by ccrunner, what makes you think that this years average SAT will go to the 1400s? I'm not calling you out or criticizing your opinion, but many colleges saw an increase in SAT mean last year, so isn't it anyone's guess as to what scores the class of 2007 produces?
