Thanks guys, I know that my GPA is weak, but hopefully my SATs and Extracurriculars bring it up.

While they may not be “Ivy” BU, and especially Northeastern, have been breaking many hearts in MA by deferring many students. Not to say these are outright rejections, but it is not easy to get into either school. I would say UMass is a little easier - not sure about the other two.

BU: Match
NEU: Match
Syracuse: Low match
UMass Amherst: Safety
UWI: Match

Also, forgot to add, my mom, aunt, grandmother, and cousin all went to Northeastern, and my aunt also went to Wisconsin-Madison.

BU - low match
NEU - low match
Syracuse - safety
UMass - safety
wisconsin - safety

I’m assuming you had an upward trend for GPA? Even if not, your ethnicity and SATs will put you into most if not all of these schools.

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1444720-chance-me-wake-forest-hamilton-colby-bucknell.html

Syracuse definitely isn’t a safety like the posters above me are saying if you’re applying to the communications school. That and architecture are two very competitive programs at Syracuse. Much more competitive than the other programs there.

I would say:
Boston University - High Match
Syracuse (Newhouse) - Match
Northeastern - Match
Wisconsin - Low Match/Safety
UMass - Safety

You have really good test scores and ECs, and being a URM really helps. Have you already finished applying? If not, I would suggest adding in a couple reach schools. If you’re a senior it’s probably a little too late at this point.

NEU: Low match (if legacy holds some weight)
Syracuse Newhouse: Match

I got in to BU with the same GPA and wayyy worse SAT (1900), so you should be good there.

Would applying to Northwestern be a good idea? I mean in terms of whether or not it would be a realistic reach.

I would definitely apply to at least one school of that caliber.

Some good reach schools to consider:
Columbia
UC Berkeley
Northwestern
NYU
UNC-Chapel Hill
USC

You could also look at honors programs at places like Indiana, University of Maryland, UF, University of Missouri, etc.

All have very good journalism programs.

Some of those are bigger reaches than others, but if I were you I would aim high and have something to fall back on.

As long as you have a safety which you will definitely get into, can definitely afford, and wouldn’t mind attending, you’re fine.

Syracuse, UMASS, and Wisconsin are a match you shouldn’t have too much of an issue with those schools. Your ec’s are pretty lengthy, both BU and NEU, take those into great consideration. Your ethnicity, as ironic as it is, will most likely be what gets you in to all of those schools. Good luck!

What school at NEU did you apply to ?

The School of Business.

NEU Business: Match/high match (depending on how much weight legacy has at NEU)

Is language not a factor that many colleges consider? I know some conversational Japanese, but will they test me on it?

Anybody else?
