Chances for UF, FSU, UCF and FIU?

I have a 3.55 gpa

701 hours of community service

1890 SAT score

All classes were honors or AP unless it was an elective.

AP classes taken and passed: AP World History, AP European History, AP Calculus AB, AP United States History, AP Environmental Science and I'm currently taking AP Government, AP Psychology and AP Literature and Composition.

I'm Hispanic.

I'm an AP Scholar.

I'm the president of the Geography Team
Member of Amnesty International
Member of Social Studies Honor Society
Member of Science Honor Society
Member of First Priority Bible Club

I have 2 sisters and one is an Alumni for UF and the other is an Alumni for FSU, so legacy applies.

My GPA would be higher and I would have even more community service but in my junior year I got hit by a car and snapped both of my wrists and needed surgery. I could not feed or even bathe myself and that's why I had a positive grade trend UNTIL junior year, I pulled 2 Cs. I mentioned this on my applications, but do you think that would even matter? I have paperwork to back up this medical appeal.

I think your fine to get in as long as you apply for summer

I only applied for fall 2012 terms :/

Contact admission and ask if you can change the term you are applying for to summer.

I don’t really want to go in for summer. Plus, I wanted one last summer to myself since I decided to do Summer A or C every summer after this one. Does my medical appeal mean anything? Also, are you guys saying I don’t have a shot for fall, but I do for summer?

Did you recalculate to see if this is your FSU GPA? What were your individual SAT scores?
Your AP classes and senior class schedule should help you.

I think you have a shot for Fall at FSU and are well within standards for UCF. However, if you haven’t applied yet for UCF, your chances are getting slimmer by the day. Hurry and apply. They are all over the place with their admissions this year. Good Luck!

I am assuming the GPA you posted is recalculated the way FSU evaluates it. The most important criteria for getting into FSU is GPA and strength of schedule, followed by test scores. For fall, your GPA is a little lower than the middle 50% which was 3.6 to 4.2 last year, but you have a very strong schedule. I think there is a good possibility you will be accepted for fall, but a greater likelihood as a summer admit for the first admission cycle.

When I was going through the FSU application process a couple of years ago, at a tour of FSU during a Q&A session I asked an admission officer point blank if I would have a better chance for getting in FSU if I applied for summer instead of fall. I told him I had a job lined up for summer to earn money for school and that I would prefer starting in the fall semester. He told me to apply for fall because all the applicants in the combined fall and summer applicant pool had to meet the same entrance criteria and if they thought it was better for me to attend in summer (or more likely, better for FSU) they would put me in the summer term regardless of which term I applied for. I’m not saying this is FSU’s actual practice today for admitting freshmen, but this is how it was explained to me at the session.

Maybe the slightly lower average GPAs and test scores published for summer admittees is because of the large number of students in some of the special summer programs and from new student-athletes starting summer term who typically have a little bit lower stats than the regular FSU averages?

GatorNole, you should be fine for getting in FSU fall term. Too, did you work into your essays about your accident and your broken wrists? I’m sure the admission folks would want to know about that. Good luck!

p.s. Get a new first name!

LOL Tallahassie, your comment on changing my first name made me laugh out loud. Anyway, I included my broken wrists on my actual application. Hopefully I can get in for the Fall Term!

I predict you will be in at FSU, especially if you already applied (early decision). You will be in at UCF as well.

UF is very questionable. Is 3.55 your University GPA, or is it some other number calculated by your school (IE: All classes but unweighted). With your SAT being right around UF’s average, you would want to have around a 4.0 and be in the top ten percent of your class to have a good shot at getting into UF.

Documenting your injuries should definitely help. Sounds like a rational reason to not look so hard at grades from that semester, but I’m not an admissions officer.

I think you will earn admission everywhere except for UF.

GatorNole seems well qualified for UF too; if not admitted to UF it will be because there are simply not enough spots available at UF for all the well qualified candidates for admission.

There are many factors involved other than just GPAs and test scores considered by UF admission folks. For example, if GatorNole is the top student at little Cedar Key High School in rural Levy county–I’d almost guarantee his admission to UF; if GatorNole is a senior at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High in Ft. Lauderdale where maybe 200-300 seniors apply to UF–iffy chance for admission to UF.

I’m pretty much in agreement with everyone else here. You’re good for FSU, UCF, and FIU, but UF is questionable. In fact, I’d be willing to say that you won’t get in to UF.

Something that was hammered into us during high school by our guidance counselors was a 3.7 GPA for FSU (unweighted, core classes only, all that jazz). Now, keep in mind, that all started 7 years ago, so it’s probably gone up.

When I was at fsu they told us that they will give you a chance to apply for summer if that is the only way you will get in. So dont worry about it,but I would bet you will be offered admittance for fall, 2012. Dont worry…
My stats are alot like yours I have an 1810 sat but I have a 3.92 uf gpa and alot of ecs. Im hoping that I get in…but Im not betting on it. Im also from that school that has 200-300 seniors applying who are in the stem program. Stinks to be in such a great competitive school where you have to work hard every day. LOL…

Well, my primary target is FSU! My sister is an alumni from UF so she’s trying to shove that down my throat. I’ve seen some low GPAs from my school get into FSU (like 3.2 weighted). I’ve also seen some low GPAs get into UF. My Cap advisor is trying to tell me Legacy goes a long way. Although most people don’t think that, even the student body of FSU and UF think the same thing.

Also, I go to school in Miami. There are like 5 people applying to UF and like 30 to FSU. Most seniors in my school do not even want to go to college or they want to attend community college at Miami-Dade.

Yes to all except FSU and UF.

Maybe at the flagships. Emphasize the obstacles you overcame.

parent2noles, I would honestly be disappointed if I didn’t get accepted to FSU. I know of a lot of worse students that have been accepted. Even from my HS.

Hi Gator Nole,

Don’t worry about it,you will get in. Take alot of what you hear here with a grain of salt. This site is fabulous for information and I dont know what I would have done without the knowledge that I’ve received here since junior year…but…I will tell you that they portray everything to be a little tougher than it actually is.

You will have no problem with FSU…UF you have to wait and see. They have been know to do things in their own way…so hopefully you portrayed a good story and hopefully they look at your application and feel as though you have something to offer to the school and also will be able to be successful there. Your grades and your class choices show that you will be successful there.

You should go to the college fair tonight in WPB,both schools will be there. Its at the fairgrounds.

Take care,
hghschooljunior

“My sister is an alumni from UF so she’s trying to shove that down my throat.”

~Sounds like a Gator. :)
