Chances (From East Coast)

I am from a public school in New Hampshire. Sick of New England, and want to experience the west.

What are my chances for a biochem/biology major (if the major even matters, im not sure)?

GPA: 3.83

SAT's

CR: 580
M: 620
W:570

Captain of Football team
Student Senate
Academic All Conference
Volunteer at hospital

hmmm…i’d say that being from out of state (and so far away) probably hurts your chances. Especially this year with so many people going with the in-state route to save money. besides that your stats look pretty good!

I heard though that UW will accept a larger number of OOS this year due to budget problems. Guess we’ll see. Good luck!

If accepted you will see Pre-Science (or pre-biology…something like that) major on your unofficial transcript.

oh ok, thanks man and I hope that you are correct regarding to the out of state thing.

Honestly I think you have a 35% chance of getting in, nbg is right about accepting more OOS students this year. Admitted OOS students tend to have 3.9 GPAs with tons of APs and 1950+ SATs. Personally I would be upset if you get in as instate kids at my private school in seattle with 3.5s and mid-high 1700s sats and 25-27 ACTs are getting denied already. This is not fair as UW is a state school meant to educate the tax payers of Washington State. All of these kids would have gotten into UW any year before this one. Nevertheless, I wish you the best of luck. My dad lives in New York so for about a month a year I am offered a glance into how sickening new england and it’s mentality can be.

Interesting…
Does anyone have any links to WHO is saying more OOS’s will be accepted?? Haven’t seen that…and I would be very surprised if it is indeed true. Would love some backup stats or evidence on that…

Wallace-IMHO, your SATs look a little low for OOS admit, since OOS admit criteria is somewhat tougher than in-state. And with current economic conditions, it will certainly be interesting to see how admissions handles the numbers. I would guess that a higher percentage of in-state admits will choose to attend UW than ever before, meaning they will have to be very careful with overall admit numbers. On the bright side, your GPA looks competitive.
UW is a gem of a school. Good luck.

yeah i guess we will see. And actually, New York is not part of New England.

…and why is new england sickening?

I am aware that NY is not part of New England, but the aura of new england surely encompasses NY.

TECU, Personally I feel that New England is sickening because of the entitled elitist attitude a lot of its residents have. Not sure what causes Wallace to dislike it.

It’s tough to generalize an entire region in such a manner as seattlestudent has done. I am not sick of New England because of its “elitist” attitude which is the preconceived notion that many people outside of New England have of it…I simply want to broaden my horizons and perception by experiencing an entire new part of the country.
