Chances of getting in

Hi,

My son is a senior and looking at colleges he can get into with 3.45 weighted GPA, 2.9 weighted and 24 ACT composite… He took ACT again(waiting for results) to improve his score. He took 1 AP so far and taking 3 more in his senior year. He is the first one in our family to apply for colleges in USA.

He is looking at Penn State, Drexel, Pitt, Temple, Loyola, UMBC.

What are his chances and should he be looking at other schools? Appreciate your reply and advice…

Will he look at the Penn State regional campuses. I’m not sure he will get accepted at the main campus.

Ditto Pitt.

Yes…he is ok with pitt other campuses…but not penn state… are there any other colleges he should be looking at? When he visited Penn State, they told us about applying for summer…does that increase his chance of getting into main campus?

Do ask Penn State about summer and second semester admissions. At a some big state Us that can make a difference.

Try the CC supermatch function.

@srparent16 We have a 3.5 unweighted student with a 26 ACT and the Catholic schools are the only ones still high on the list at this point and we are half Jewish. See my thread “Thoughts on Catholic Colleges”. For your child these schools will be much more appealing than a few of the ones you listed.

Is he instate for PA schools?

What is your budget? Most/all of those schools don’t give much/any aid.

Which Loyola is this?

Have you run the NPCs?

What is his major and career goal?

Is he a citizen or green card holder?

For the Jesuit schools, a background in catholic education could help with scholarships and admission but I don’t know if that applies to you.

^^^^ I would disagree with the above poster. My S went to a Jesuit school and got in with a nice merit scholarship with absolutely zero catholic education. He had the same outcome at the two other Jesuit schools he applied to.

thank you all for your replies… I just noticed I posted 2.9 as weighted…2.9 is unweighted GPA (not sure if that matters).

@mom2collegekids yes instate for PA Schools. Loyola in Baltimore, MD. He is looking to do Business as his major. Not really looking for any major financial aids…and not sure about the budget…We can probably afford Drexel like colleges…

@AStern thank you for the link. Great summary. He was looking at providence too…based on the info he found on the internet, he feels it is out of his reach…

Thanks.

Any of the other state schools (aside from Penn State) would also be a good match for him…some obviously easier to get into than others, but good to look at if you want to increase your range.
