Chances of Getting Into Hampshire or UMass Amherst

I am a current freshman at a community college looking to transfer as soon as possible. I never graduated high school and as such, I have a GED and have never taken the SATs or anything like that.

I finished my first semester (did not attend in the spring) with a 3.65. I took thirteen credits over the summer and while I only have two grades back so far, it looks like I will end up with around a 3.75-3.8 when the new year starts. I am currently a liberal arts major but I will be looking to major in environmental sciences with a minor in political science though this could very well change. My ECs are non-existent aside from working part time on campus and being part of the student government.

If I maintained my GPA and took it easy next semester and just finished up my gen ed requirements how plausible would it be to transfer into Hampshire or UMass Amherst and how competitive would I be elsewhere in terms of admission and merit aid? Also how difficult is it to get into the Honors College at UMass as I am currently part of the honors program at my community college.

Hi! You may want to check the Financial Aid at your target schools.

Hampshire didn’t fill last year. I think that it’s because they don’t have the deep pockets available to give great financial aid. But don’t let that discourage you!! Try applying and see what happens. I’ve heard of one case where the person transferred in from UMass Amherst to Hampshire and got full aid. That’s very very rare, but it did happen once.

It’s a great school for the right person
