Chances of getting into San Diego State University for Nursing

Hello!

I’m an OOS Applicant from New York City. I’m in love with SDSU. I’m currently on my gap year right now and I’m actually finishing up my CNA Certification so by the time my application goes out, I will be a CNA at a Nursing home. I believe that my CSU GPA is a 4.14 GPA, this includes 10th-12th. I have taken rigorous courses and have gotten A’s on all of them. I only have 1 B grade on my transcript and that’s an 88 in AP Biology but I got a 93 the next semester so it’s okay. Umm, I’ve volunteered at hospitals and all that jazz. My ACT score is currently a 26 but SDSU superscores and on that test I got a 33 in reading so I’m retaking it in October and I’m expecting a 31+ on the ACT(I’ve been studying like crazy). For my Gap year, I went to do a service project in New Zealand and Fiji and I want a career in International Travel Nursing and I want to start my steps toward my dream at SDSU’s Nursing program. Think I’ve got what it takes?

P.S. I also want to apply for the Weber Honors College!! do I have the chance for that as well? help me out west coast people!

P.P.S. I don’t want to go anywhere else, if any of you have any advice for me, I will gladly take it. :slight_smile:

  1. San Diego State is a public university and, as such, gives priority to local students.
  2. Nursing is impacted.
  3. Everything is based on the eligibility index (EI). Also, your freshman grades, although not "considered" for admission, will be on your transcript. http://arweb.sdsu.edu/es/admissions/freshmen/index.html
  4. Did you take a visual or performing arts course for one year? This is a requirement for California High School students to graduate, and this meets the "F" requirement for instate applicants.
  5. Can you afford the OOS fees? There is no financial aid for OOS. Expect to pay $40K per year without the nursing fees included. We Californians need your OOS fees. You wouldn't be eligible for instate residency for your time at SDSU because you would be coming to California for educational purposes, so paying full fees, all four years, is expected.
  6. Apply, because you never know how you will stack against the incoming class, but be aware that it is a VERY popular campus in the CSU system. There are a LOT of in-state residents who apply with very strong stats and higher ACT scores. There is a possibility of not being admitted. What will you do if you are not admitted?

I actually graduated from a performing arts high school so I have plenty of grades that satisfy the “F” requirement. My freshman year grades are great so I’m not worried about that. I can afford the OOS fees, SDSU is cheaper than most of the private schools on the east coast that have a direct entry program. I’m applying to other direct entry nursing programs so it’s not like SDSU is the only college I’m applying to. It’ll suck to not get in but I do have other options, on the East Coast as well as the West coast. based on what I’ve sent you, do I stack against the incoming class?

With a less than a 5% accrptance rate, it is impossible to chance you. You look like a competitive applicant. Good Luck.

No one knows what the incoming class will be, so I don’t know how you will stack, but I do know about two local students who are attending this fall: my nephew (in local SD zip code) and my friend’s daughter (in north SD county zip);

Nephew: 4.25 GPA, Business major, 1400 SAT, various clubs/honor societies, weekly Food bank volunteer, AYSO soccer coach. (His school has an admission pact with SDSU) He has been a Soccer player 10 years, Varsity Basketball x 4 years. Employee at Sea World.

Chris: 4.4 GPA, Engineering major, 1450 SAT, All of the honor societies, robotics club, varsity field hockey x 4 yrs, cheerleader. She collects backpacks and school supplies all year long, and then hosts a Xmas party each year at an orphanage established by Mother Teresa in Tijuana. She distributes ~700 backpacks a year. (<This is how I got to know the family and their FB posts about it). I think she is the Honors college.

The mother reported that, at the orientation, the speakers indicated over 83K applications were received for only 8K spots. Locals do have several university choices in San Diego. However, it’s tough for SDSU for anyone who lives “north of the 56” because these residents are expected to apply to CSU San Marcos and they don’t want to. It is a beautiful campus, but is in North San Diego County and does not have a large sports program nor is it as well-established and as popular as SDSU.

Other than EI, I don’t know what your odds will be because it REALLY depends on the incoming class’s stats. (PS, my dd, from San Diego, went to school at SUNY Buffalo, loved it, graduated with a degree in engineering, and returned to San Diego for a job.)

Edited to add:
SDSU has a very good performing arts program. (not NY, but California strong) You may want to highlight your performing arts program instead of the “nursing” EC’s simply because they know you want nursing. If you highlight your other interests, you may be more “marketable”.
