Because of location, major and cost, my HS SR daughter has targeted SUNY New Paltz as her first choice of colleges. Her GPA is 86, which will go up after her 1st semester grades. Her SAT was disappointing -- 480 math, 490 critical reading, 430 writing.

What do you think her chances are of getting into New Paltz? Also, is there a benefit to an doing an early admission application (Nov 15 deadline)?

what is the major? SUNY New Paltz has become increasingly difficult to gain admissions . Perhaps she could go to community for a semester or two and then transfer in - the transfer requirements would not need SAT scores and the gpa of 3.0 or so would be all she needs. Otherwise, there’s a list of SAT optional colleges (google) - there are many, due to the fact that research is showing that SAT scores do not necessarily equate with college success.

She wants to major in adolescent education, specializing in history…I just find it frustrating that a solid B student (86 average) like her is gonna have trouble getting in.

The admissions process is frustrating for all levels, all students - she has a chance there, but to be “safe”, get a list of “safety” schools that are SAT optional and would gladly welcome an 86 gpa - very good accomplishment! If she has her heart set on New Paltz, go to community college for even a semester - get your 3.5 and transfer into NP!! Dreams can be realized along many different paths…
