Changing majors... is it possible?

Okay so after a lot of thinking, I've realized that I'm just not cut out to be a doctor. I think I could make it, I just won't be really happy because I'm not science oriented (which is bad.) My current major is mathematics/applied science, but I want to change that to probably applied mathematics. Is it possible to do this during orientation?

And here's the ultimate question... which I'm kind of scared to ask because I'll probably get yelled at or chastised for being stupid, but is it possible to change into computer science? I've recently began thinking about it and I've taken a computer science course in summer school (just to boost my GPA) and I think I kind of enjoyed programming. But it's engineering so... I don't know if I can change into it.

Thank you :)

Yes, you can do that during orientation because they’re both in L&S.

Oh.

…Ooooh.

Oh now I feel like an idiot, haha. Somehow my searching on google led me to believe that computer science is in the college of engineering…

Thank you! :)

computer science is in the school of engineering, not l&s
there is an outline of guidelines somewhere on the school of engineering page on what you need to do to get into engineering, but basically you have to maintain a 3.5 and take 2 science/math classes a quarter
as far as switching from math/applied science to applied math, those are both in l&s and that you can do at orientation

Oh. :frowning: So it’s not something I can switch into at orientation? Would I be able to transfer in after the first quarter? Because I don’t want to transfer too late because I want to be able to graduate on time…

You can’t switch in to Engineering at orientation, nor can you switch in after the first quarter. They require at least two quarters and completion of two of the required math courses TAKEN AT UCLA (APs don’t count towards the two) as well as two of the other “science” courses required for the major (i.e. Chem 20A, Physics 1A, etc). Coming from the college, you also have to have a minimum 3.5 GPA in the math/science courses.

You can take most of the courses a CS major would take, with the exception of CS 31 (it’s for Engineering majors only). What they recommend for potential CS applicants is to take PIC 10A in the fall and PIC 10B in the winter and if you are admitted to CS, you can petition for those two courses to count in place of CS 31 (it’s usually approved).

Heh, only read the first paragraph asking Math/Applied Science → Applied Math… Whoops
