So I was waitlisted to UC Davis for Biomedical Engineering, and I want to know that if I happen to make it into Davis with this major by some miracle, how easy it’d be to transfer into a major such as Biology.
What is the process that I need to go through, if it is even possible at all? Have people had any experience transferring from a college of Engi major to a college of BioSci major at this school?
Any and all responses would be appreciated, thanks.
From my understanding, it is not too difficult to change your major at UC Davis.
If you want to change your major:
You must use the online Change of Major Petition.
You will need to schedule an appointment with the major adviser of your intended major.
If you are wishing to change your major within the College of Biological Sciences, then you must make an appointment with your new major adviser by clicking the “Schedule an Appointment” link above. You may do so by clicking the “Schedule an Appointment” link above.
Some departments require the completion of prerequisite courses with a minimum GPA before you can change into the major.
You must complete 1 quarter at UC Davis before becoming eligible to change your major.
The approval process will occur online.
@Gumbymom Would I lose my work I did in that first quarter if I was to change my major freshman year? I wouldn’t think so, since I think I’d be doing my prereqs. my first quarter, but just making sure.
By “lose [your] work” I’m guessing you’re asking if the credits you get your first quarter would still count towards anything? The answer to that is yes, especially if you plan well. Your first quarter is spent taking one or two (somestimes three, depending on major) prereqs, and one or two GEs. If you do something like chemistry and calculus as prereqs your first quarter, those apply to so many majors that you wouldn’t be behind at all. Even if something didn’t apply directly to your new major, they can always apply either as GE credits or just as credits towards graduation.
To summarize: Anything you take at this point in college counts towards something.
If you do get in off the waitlist, you’ll have a chance to discuss all of this one-on-one with an adviser at orientation. When you get to orientation, just explain that you want to switch majors. Orientation leaders are trained to be able to advise for all majors, so they’ll be able to help you out. It’s more common than you may realize.
