changing majors

once i got accepted to a college i wanted to go, but through my senior year, i figured that the major i have intially put down is no longer the major i want to study at this school..

should i call them as soon as i have gotten the acceptance letter
OR
wait untill i am physically going to that school to change my major

im just scared that by chaning my major before i actually go to that school, they may drop my admission

What school are you at? The large majority of schools allow you to change majors easily without any penalty. Once admitted you are admitted to the school, not just your major. (although there are schools where you apply directly to the school of your major in question…this might be a bit different)

They almost certainly won’t drop your admission. But unless it effects your fall schedule, just wait until you get there. I changed my major before I started (then changed it back 2nd semester…hehehe), and it took a lot of emails.

very curious about this, any other responses?

^

Most faculties you don’t apply directly to from high school. If yours was like that (ie you didn’t directly apply), it should be extremely easy to change. Just give admissions a call.

Beware though, at some universities you have to apply to a college within the university. At Maryland for instance, I’m an undecided major now. Even though I’m paying these guys money, if I want to major in business I have to get a certain GPA, take certain classes, and then apply to be admitted to the business school. If I don’t get in, oh well, guess I have to major in Turf and Golf Course Management.

I really don’t get it. It’s like paying for a car and then being told you can only drive it on weekdays.

Dude, change your major now! I was on the fence about a major change (engineering vs business), but I made my decision while I was physically at school, and by that time I had already been admitted to the engineering school and had to go through a headache of a process to get into the business school. It took me two semesters to fulfill the transfer requirements…

How though?? Just call the admissions office and request it?

yes that’s the best place to start. if not, they’ll tell you where to call…make sure you are sure about it though, cause it goes both ways. you dont wanna transfer back to this major that you are thinking you don’t wanna do…

Also, it may be totally different at your school. maybe you should ask the admissions office how easy it is to transfer from your major to your new major.

Isn’t that some ******** though Easton? I mean you’re paying these mother****ers a lot of money (unless you’re on a full ride, but still) and then they have the nerve to say you can’t pick what you want.

It varies as to how hard it is. But a lot of colleges require you contact the individual school once you’re admitted to get their permission. At my school, it didn’t matter if you had started school or not, it was the same process. And I just changed majors within my college. Changing colleges is even harder. Once admitted, admissions can often not do anything. But again, just ask the school, it will vary.

i think i am going to call now to change my major,
i was talking about uci, for anyone who asked.
and thanks for all who replied

Word. hope it all goes well. DCH, it does suck…I remember i was at the point of transferring to a different university because the transfer just to a different school within my university was going to take so long…but thankfully, all that’s sorted out, and that’s all she wrote.

i just had to send a message through myadmissionsuci page,
to my couselor,
and it was changed after just 2 days.
so if anyone else was wondering, it’s really easy.

Easton, just curious, why did u choose business over Engineering in the end? (I feel kinda torn between the 2 of them too)

FWIW, I heard engineering is much harder to transfer into. So if you’re deciding between engineering and XYZ, apply into the Engineering school first. Then transfer out (more easily) if you now wanna study in XYZ faculty.
