I'm planning to take the chemistry placement exam in march.
It's been a while I studied chemistry and I do need to refresh my memory from the basic.
The school website says it's "California Chemistry Diagnostic Test" but unlike the state official name, there's no information on google.
Does anyone know a few good books to study for the exam?
Does the exam just cover high school chemistry or goes more in depth to AP chemistry?

I’m a HS senior taking General Chem at a different CSU and in order to take this class I had to take the chem placement test, which I’m assuming is pretty similar to CSULB’s, if not basically the same.

According to CSULB’s website, “General concepts covered on the test include these chemistry topics with the greatest emphasis: chemical formulas and composition, balancing and stoichiometry of common chemical equations, ideal gas law and gas properties, the nuclear atom and atomic structure-orbitals, periodic properties of elements, and solutions: behavior, concentration and stoichiometry. Math topics with the greatest emphasis include interpretation of algebraic equations and their graphs, and measurement and the metric system using scientific notation.”

So, to me, it sounds like it will basically cover general high school chemistry. If it’s anything like the test I had to take, that’s exactly what it is, along with some basic algebra. Honestly, if you kept your notes from HS Chem, just look over those and you should do fine. Don’t waste money on a review book (which I highly doubt even exists, seeing as only basic level chem is covered on the exam). If it’s like the CPT I took, it’s even easier than the Chem SAT II, let alone the AP Chem test (which makes sense, seeing as the chem class you enter after passing the CPT is basically just AP chem all over again).

Thanks a lot for the reply! I was just studying basic high school chem as no one has replied. Do you remember what was the algebra portion in the exam? How many questions are there? Did you feel like you’re given enough time?
It’s been a while since I studied chem and it’s important that I pass this test so I can save time&money not to take super basic chem at college… otherwise my whole academic plan will be messed up.

When I try a web search, I find two brief sets of practice questions posted on various college websites around California:

http://www.lacitycollege.edu/services/matriculation/docs/chemquestions.pdf

I’ll be taking the test this summer. It’s been three years since I took high school chemistry, and I no longer have my notes. It’d be great to find a review at the level of what’s on this test – I gather an AP Chemistry test prep book might be overkill? Let us know how you do.
