Choate Rosemary Hall Wallingford, CT

Hey everyone! (sorry to butt in) I am hoping to be a freshman of 2012. I am kind of worried because I see a bunch of people who are going to be freshmans in 2015 and they already applied! Am i too late? When should I start doing applications?

I think what you mean by “freshmans in 2015” are the people who will be freshman next year. Don’t let the 2015 throw you off. 2015 is their graduating year, meaning they will be seniors in 2014-2015 school year. If you are planning to come to Choate as a freshman in 2012 fall, then you will be the class of 2016.

For current Choaties, I have a question that has really been irking me. I plan to participate in sports in all the trimesters, but as I mentioned above, I’m a thespian and I wouldn’t like to give up on theater… Is there any way to participate in both?

@BronxKid,

Hey! It’s great that you’re both! I am afraid it’s difficult for a Choatie to be active in both the arts and the athletics simultaneously. When you participate in a production, it takes place during your sports practice, so you can’t fit both in. If you are really interested in doing theatre as well, you will most likely have to give up a sport one term. In fact, many of the thespians here partake in the Arts Concentration program so that they don’t have to take sports because sports and art practicing time often overlaps. It’s a sacrifice. I myself, as well as many of the artist-athletes here, want to be in the spring musical but cannot due to Spring sports.

Aww… Bummer… What about SPF? You could do sports anthe SPF simultaneously, right?

@BronxKid- I think that SPF takes up your sports time because play practices are decided by the directors. Since they decide the times, it would be hard to also coordinate it with sports practice. One thing that I just thought of though is that if you participated in a morning sport (intramural ice hockey for example) you could also be involved in the winter production since times would not overlap. Goothebear correct me if I am wrong please! In the end, it really depends on how important a specific play or sport is to you and if you are willing to sacrifice the other option.

This is going to be a difficult choice… I had everything set from each term… I guess one year without theater won’t kill me, although it will hurt. I was discussing that with my friends (who happened to be my tour guide) and he said I might be able to do SPF… oh well…

Which sports do you plan on playing, and with what level of involvement/how long have you been playing each of these sports?

Fall- 3 years intramural football
Winter- Basketball 6 years intramural 1 year competitive
Spring- Volleyball 2 years intramural 1 year (school team turned coed this year)

I think I’ll take squash in the winter. My dean went to Choate and said that they’re team is really good

boys squash is fun but extremely competitive, but you should try it! It looks like a really great team to be on

@BronxKid

*their

I can’t wait to go already!

Does Choate have preseason?

Yes we do. It varies from sport to sport and which season the sport is in. Which sport’s preseason are you planning on participating in?

How does it work if you just want to try a new sport? Do you still have to go to tryouts with all the JV and Varsity kids? Or can you just sign up?

If you want to try a new sport, I believe that you still go to V/JV tryouts and then they will place you accordingly. Usually, if you are new to the sport, you will then be switched into thirds tryouts. In regards to preseason, most fall and spring sports have preseason. Winter sports do not just because of timing. If you are interested in going to preseason for a fall or spring sport, email the coach directly asking specific information about preseason. If I remember from this year though, new students have to be invited to preseason whereas next year you can decide whether or not you would like to participate. If you do not get invited to preseason though, do not worry. Lost of students cannot make it and rely on tryouts during the first few days of the fall term. Hope this helped!

@Swamped

I’m not sure… I’m still deciding football vs waterpolo… A current sophomore told me I should try it out during my revisit and the idea of me playing football was interesting, but so does waterpolo! I’m caught in between two awesome sports.

@Yellow

Yeah! Thanks for all your help :D

Thanks yellow! I’d definitely want to try field hockey. I guess I’ll just show up to practice when I get there in the fall

Any of you sophomores planning to be prefects for next year?
