Class of 2012/wellesley hopefuls forum

First Choices: Wellesley :), Georgetown, Columbia (as if I’m getting in, but…)
Second Choices: Bryn Mawr, Scripps, Mt. Holyoke (maybe), Swarthmore, Notre Dame, Davidson
Safeties: Still trying to figure this one out. Maybe Hofstra, USD, or USF.

I’ve turned in my first application (Georgetown), but didn’t realize that the Scripps merit scholarship app is due in a week. Guess I better get to work…

For those concerned with Wellesley’s need-based financial aid-
They meed 100% demonstrated need based on your CSS profile. That means that Wellesley takes the amount of money the CSS profile says that your family can afford to pay each year, subtracts it from their total tuition and gives you a grant for that amount. Wellesley is not my first choice so I didn’t apply ED (I’m applying EE).
Also, I went to Discover Wellesley Weekend on a travel grant. The girls there are super nice and it almost, from what they tell me, doesn’t feel like a woman’s school because they leave campus to go to Harvard, MIT, Olin, Babson, and every Boston area college all the time.

Anyone have any idea what they want to major in when they (hopefully!) get accepted at Wellesley?

I want to do a double major in English and East Asian Languages and Literature (Japanese focus). I plan on becoming an English professor someday :D

I’m curious what everyone else’s intended majors and careers are.

I’m a history major perhaps doubling in women’s studies! I applied ED, so nervous :confused: My grades and test scores were TERRIBLE (3.4 UW 4.0 W and 1970 SAT). Thankfully my essays were great and my ECs/recs and other stuff is pretty good too! Wellesley seems like such a reach though with my stats :frowning:
-Just a sidenote: my why wellesley essay was ridiculously specific and long too(still 2 paragraphs). Smart move? or was it a bad idea?

Just wanted to also say, I LOVELOVELOVE Wellesley!

Wellesleygal- don’t be worried, that’s really bogong terrible! We’re all in the same nervous boat. And you did ED which never hurts. I’m sure everything will work out, and hopefully we’ll all get in!
UFONinja- as far as
Majors are concerned, I’m interested in English too! However, I would probably pair it with political science.
Haha I really hope everything works out for all of us! :)

Well for sure don’t know what “bogong” means, that was supposed to say “not.”

I want to major in Media and Film Studies although English would be a more traditional path, I suppose, for an aspiring freelance writer.

I want to major in Mathematics or Biology. A little out of the ordinary since Wellesley is a liberal arts school but whatever.

I’m interested in Neuroscience!

So how are you all feeling about your applications? How are your stats? How are you essays? Think you’ll get it in? Lets hear it!

Applications: They’re coming along pretty well. I really just have to update some extracurricular stuff and complete my supplements :D

Stats: My GPA is lousy because I was unbelievably lazy my freshman year -_-" My test scores are also lousy. I’ve gotten all A’s since the second semester of my sophomore year, except for one B and one C (strong upward trend, yay!) I’ll be graduating with 4 AP’s (AP Stats, AP Psychology, AP Micro and Macro) and 2 college classes (Japanese Language I and II). I am hoping Wellesley really looks at those things…

Essays: Outstanding. My teachers and counselor have praised me profusely on them.

Recs: Very good. Have one from my art teacher, math teacher, and counselor. I also have a rec. for my music supplement from my flute teacher. I’m getting an additional one from my English teacher.

Extracurriculars: Part of 7 clubs. Did volunteering at the library every summer except for my senior year. Editor-in-chief of the school newspaper. Newly appointed leader of the Game Club. Head of the annual dinner committee for student gov. Am also a part of the prom committee in student gov. Layout designer of yearbook. Have been playing flute since I was 11. I’m also a peer mentor.

How I’m feeling: A little nervous. My extracurriculars, letters of recommendation, and essays (especially the essays) are the strongest parts of my application. My GPA (3.30UW 3.33W) and test scores (26 on ACT…again!) are the weakest parts of my application. Hopefully Wellesley will notice how hard I have worked to bring up my GPA and how involved I am. Wellesley is my top choice, so I am really hopeful that I get in :smiley: Best of luck to everyone on here! I hope we all get accepted!

Applications: Almost finished. Had a heart attack because I thought that the Common App had already been submitted for all my colleges when I sent it to Scripps last week (but I got that resolved!).

Stats: GPA 3.98 UW (8 APs total), SAT Scores 2170 Total (670CR/780M/720W), SAT Subject Scores 770 M2, 730 M1, 630MB. SAT scores are going to be my downfall, especially my critical reading. I’m much more science/math oriented which kind of explains my scores.

Essays: In progress. My personal statement needs a little bit of refining but my Why Welelsley essay really shows my passion and knowledge of Wellesley.

Recs: Should be good… I haven’t seen them…

ExtraCurriculars: Excellent. I’m REALLY involved in varsity soccer and student government. I have chaired many community service events in the school and community. I am also president of a variety of clubs and programs offered at our school.

Overall: A little nervous. Wellesley is still my top choice. I wish I had sent in my application for Early Decision so that I could hear back sooner! I can’t wait to start college in the fall… I just hope they give me enough financial aid to be able to go. Otherwise I’ll just be going to my state university and commuting from home =(

Out of curiosity, how does your school’s GPA system work? Do you get - and + grades, each with their own corresponding GPA values (example, B+=3.5)? Are honors weighted? And how many extra points are honors and AP classes worth?

Haha, just trying to put my GPA in perspective with everyone else’s. At my school we get 1 extra point for AP classes (but only if we get a C or above) and I’m fairly certain honors are NOT weighed.

And does your school have a limit on the number of classes you can take? If so, what is that limit? (My school allows us to take 6 classes max, unless we’re on an early graduation plan.)

Hi Guys,
Im applying to Wellesley this year, and have a question:
The supplement wants “two well developed paragraphs”
However, thats very arbitrary, isnt it?

I don’t want to write too little and include all my reasons, but at the same not overwhelm them with a load of waffling. Surely, it shouldnt be longer than the common-app essay itself? After all, its only a supplement?

Have any of you guys gotten some good advice on this?

@lafairytale
Yeah, I’m kind of in the same boat as you. “Two paragraphs” is incredibly vague. I don’t want to be so detailed that the admission office gets bored with my supplement and rejects me. On the other hand, I keep reading about people who got in because “my Why Wellesley essay was excellent.”

From what I’ve heard from my counselor and read from books, those supplements should be pretty much like essays. But then again I suppose it depends on the college and the question. My Why Wellesley supplement is 498 words (still need to proofread it). I’m assuming you’re just supposed to develop your ideas as much as you can with only 2 paragraphs.

@UFOninja, my school does a 4.0 unweighted system…
A=4.0
A-=3.7
B+=3.3
B= 3.0
B-=2.7 etc…
My school does not weigh grades so grades in Honor or Advanced Placement classes are do not differ from the scale mentioned previously. In regards to the class limit, my school offers a standard six periods. However, a 7th period drama class or work cite learning class is also offered. I was not able to do these however because I do athletics after school. Also, my school only offers a few AP classes (Econ, Calc, Stats, Bio, Physics/Chem alternating each year, US History, Government, Environmental). I come from a school where students rarely make it out of state.

@lafairytale, my Why Wellesley essay is about 450 words long. I currently have three paragraphs (Intro, Why Wellesley, and how I could contribute to Wellesley) and am working on shrinking it down to two. As long as it’s no longer than your Common App essay I’d say you’re okay.

Wow my why Wellesley essay was 700 something words and fairly detailed: I included a range of things i was interested in. I even talked about how I liked the idea of no scantron tests at Wellesley so I actually understood what I was doing instead of guessing. Was this a bad idea? I just LOVE wellesley too much to not have written a long essay. And everyone kept saying that this essay was the most important so I thought it was smart to be thorough to define fit. GAAAHHH I’M FREAKING OUT NOW!!!
