Class of 2015 from Nepal

^^regarding the 3-2 program you people have been discussing,
the 3-2 program is a newly introduced one which is not that famous.

There are a lot of reasons for the 3-2 to program not being famous.

One simple reason, if someone joins the 3-2 thing, he will hardly go on to become an engineer. The statistics say that ‘hardly’ 1 out of 20 students who have joined the 3-2 program go on to engineering school.

Another problem for students like us(i mean those who cant afford $50k a year) is that, once you complete the 3 years in LAC and transfer to somewhere, maybe columbia, you wont get any aid in there! That means…you goto a LAC for 3 years with very nice aid and transfer to an IVY league university and pay the full cost of education over there for 2 years. Ha ha. Who can afford it?

Someone may argue that columbia is IVY league and has got very nice aid. Yes my friend, columbia has got good aid but not for 3-2 transfers! I wont say that there are no scholarships for 3-2 students in columbia, but the aid is really worse. $10k a year:-( I have been talking abt columbia because many LACs say that they have agreement with columbia for 3-2

loadshedding…i will post more after electricity is back!

@all
I really go with confidential2015, it is damn true about transfer scholarship. Moreover for the future engineers(like me) i recommend not to go for any kind of LAC because you look out in many facts and you will find out that earning is fast after the University degree moreover you are gonna lose one year instead of going to some professional field. So better do a very deep research before going for any LACs.
Best wishes.

@Rockeroncc
hey man, u are wrong about that 3-2 program as i have known. Its not a masters its just like Bachelors of Art and Bachelors of Science in Engineering. 2 degrees but not useful for you and me. I think you know what I mean.
So its two bachelors and not a bachelors and masters.

^^I guess i need to continue,
another more important factor not to consider 3-2 is that, if you goto an engineering school, by the time you think you are there, you start earning! Its true! After your first year you get chance of internships in really good companies. You might think internships??Yuk! But no, those internships might let you earn more than $20k! Mind it people. If you are going to fill ur pockets soon LAC is not the option to study engineering.

Next factor, by the time your frens start earning,you will still be stuck somewhere in an engineering school and who guarantees that you will complete ur engineering within the last 2 years?

Another thing regarding the transfers, they are not sure! Yes, its not sure that you will goto an engineering school even if you meet their criteria. If any college with 3-2 program says that it will transfer you to the next college for sure, they are lying.Even bringing 3.0 GPA wont help. You may find that columbia has listed the colleges with whom it has the agreement of taking students for 3-2. But there is no agreement that it will take all the students who meet criteria neither it has agreement to take the student for sure. And guess what, even if you goto any engineering school(in this case columbia), they provide you with the worst possible services. You are like the least cared student in there once you go as 3-2…

Another one, how can you study something in 2 years which your friend completed in 4 years? Now dont tell me that what about the 3 years in LAC. Well, the 3 years are like bridge course. You know which topic to study but never know what is really in there. Just think once, if LACs were really that strong in engineering, why would they let you transfer? They are worst in engineering. Thats why they have such thing called 3-2…

Everything depends upon you. You might think that at least 1 out of 20 student goes to columbia then why cant that person be me…Think calmly…In my opinion, what liberal arts colleges do by showing columbia, dartmouth, caltech and other elite engineering schools is just try to take your money…nothing else…so dont try to throw yourself in this trap of 3-2…

Best of Luck

@Chandalsaitan—rockeroncc is true man. There are several types of such programs. one is 3-2 which lets you earn a BS and BA. Next one is 4-2 which directly leads you to MS!like–> BA, BS, MS…there is one 5-2 program too. But I never suggest these things. You dont wanna be like someone studying medicine…studying over and over for 7 to 8 years!

Wow. I was just about to reply to RoCkErOnCc when the lights went out. But hey, thanks for the info, confidential2015 !

@confidential2015
yes you are right but i never heard of a 5-2 program but sure about that 4-1 program. And I really support you for that earning thing. I have been doing a lot more research on this earning thing because I wanna earn alot so I am going for engineering.
And yes I once again say Please please Do a lot lot lot lot research before choosing LAC. Starting might be very good, college life might be very good but you don’t wanna spend your whole life just thinking of good college days only. Do you???

just starting which to start first???

^^true man…and even look at those so called professors for the 3-2 thing…there are hardly 5 of them…at the time when you should be taught in a lecture hall by professionals, you are being taught by some so called professors who actually dont have that nice knowledge of handling engineering students.people may think that small classes are good compared to larger lecture halls filled with more students. But i strongly disagree…coz the more students, the more competition, the more professionalism which engineering demands highly. So, if you are gonna be engineer and create a bright future, 3-2 sucks…its better to goto some unknown universities rather than choose 3-2 coz even the least known university has some kind of relationship with the industry if it teaches technical subjects…and placements are sure!

Enjoy man…earn a lot…

@confidential2015
its not much about earning for me currently, its which one of them that is really generous enough to give me aids n lots of scholarships…in ur view , which ones r ‘not to miss’(which includs me) for class of 2015?

Yeah I too am not for the 3-2 programs.I was just telling the program found in Trinity only nothing more than that.I am too going to an engineering university(even if its never heard as confidential2015 said).

I have been a silent observer in collgeconfidential for over a year now and as my earlier profile contained my real name I made this profile so that I could use the little knowledge I have with everyone over here. As the recent discussion is about engineering in US, let me share a few things I know

If you are 100% sure you want to do engineering, then don’t go to liberal arts school.
For a moment lets be realistic and not talk about HYPSM. How many other good engineering schools offer good aid to international students ??

Now don’t go posting salary statistics, because there is a long way to reach upto there (and those statistics are for US citizens) with numerous obstacles like getting a H1 visa

this suggestion sounds pretty funny and lame but if you are bent on doing engineering after you complete all of ur standarized testing go to a good consultancy and take college names from there or ask them to get I20 for engineering with scholorship for you. I know I am going to get a lot of negative feed back for this suggestion.

If you have more question feel free to ask.

@here 123
Why do we need to go to consultancy?We can find them on our own.Its not only those HYPSM that have good engineering others state univ like MSU and many more do have good programs on that.And yeah they do provide good aid if you are capable and early.

[great books - book search, top 100 books](<a href=“Stay Motivated – BigFuture | College Board”>Stay Motivated – BigFuture | College Board)
for all those who wish to develop their vocab…

@here123–well, i somewhat agree with you. Because those consultancies have a relationship developed with so many universities and they have knowledge about each and every scholarship available in there.Even the things we students cant do on our effort can be done by consultancies. But, what they do is, always try to send students to some pathetic college with whom they have their relationship…that’s why they are not liked…

@chandalsaitan:

OK…let me make a list:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)–>must give a try
Stanford University–>very nice aid
Bucknell University–>good aid
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI)–>I dont think it gives good aid
California Institute of Technology (CIT)–> need sensitive for internationals
Polytechnic Institute of New York University–>average type of aid…not so hard to get in
Lehigh University–>must give a try
Carnegie Mellon University (CMU)–>F*** off
University of California, Berkeley–>State Uni :-(
Colorado School of Mines–>Offers full tuition in some cases!
Cornell University–>Highest number of nepalese are studying at cornell
Georgia Institute of Technology–>
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT)
Cooper Union–>Give a try if u can afford $10k a year, tuition free…but many internationals have to pay some other fees
California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (CalPoly)–>State Uni
Drexel University–>Offers good aid, very nice engineering program
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech)–>if i had enough money, i would go nowhere then virginia tech
New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech)–>Cheap, good engineering program

Okay…i could do only upto here…but if u are really going to US for engineering, PM me and I will let you know three very good,hardly known universities which offer top notch programs and very good aid!

I posted this earlier too…once again, if you are interested in any state uni…plz once talk to them. There are aid in state unis for internationals…they give full tuition and even full ride(except ur tickets)…check them out man…and try to talk with them…one example…i told you earlier too…one of my frens got almost full aid at a state uni this year and is paying 3k for his food…nothing else!

i will be sitting for SATI this oct and SATII on nov… does that mean i won’t be able to apply in ED???
plzzzzzz suggest

everyone does the same man…no need to worry! You can apply for ED…
