Class of 2020- Admission Status

Based on what I read the Galveston engineering students can declare their major after the second semester and have a pretty good chance of getting into your desired major with a decent gpa (3.5+)

I got the opportunity to go to the Engineering Preview Day at Galveston yesterday. My daughter was accepted to this program and very thankful that Texas A&M provided this new avenue for admitting engineering students to the Dwight Look college of Engineering.

First off, you are in Dwight Look College. Your spot in the program is already reserved. You can chose any of the 16 offered majors through Dwight Look college of engineering. You can declare your major after 1st semester and if you have at least a 3.5 GPA after completing second semester core engineering curriculum are guaranteed your first major of choice.

The way I see it, you get best of both worlds and if you want to be an Aggie Engineer, you couldn’t pick a better option besides the same program at College Station. It all depends on how serious you are about graduating from Dwight Look in your field of choice. It is your spot to lose. My daughter understands the opportunity she has been given and will take it and use it to help her achieve her goals of learning from a first class institution with a world wide network of Texas A&M engineers. Is it college station? Of course not, but it’s the same Texas A&M rich in tradition but on a smaller scale with the benefits of spending your first year on an island.

Congrats @LoveAM! The advice above is sound and seems to be a great opportunity!!

Thanks guys, does anyone know if you should accept a financial aid from a college that you not sure if you wanna go, does the scholarship goes away after a certain time? I received a scholarship from UH (excellent something)

Hey everyone! I’m an international applicant and I just found out that I’ve been accepted for BS economics at Texas A&M. My first choice of major was Engg-CS and eco was second. I’ve read alot about how Texas A&M’s engg course is really good, but I’m not sure about the economics course. Would it be possible for me to change my major to CS after the first semester?

From what I was told at Engineering preview day, if your already accepted to Dwight Look College, it is almost guaranteed you will get your choice of engineering major at Texas A&M. Stipulations being 3.5 GPA or better after your first year for students already in Dwight Look that is. It is possible to transfer or change of curriculum to Engineering but there are very few spots available and in some cases depending on what program you are trying to get into, none available at all.

That being said, if you have the following options available to you as in incoming freshmen, full admit to Dwight Look College of Engineering through College Station, Galveston or Engineering Academy Blinn/Bryan, then you have the best chance at being an Aggie Engineer. Other options do exist but, the available opportunities I just listed are the easiest, if you want to call it that.

@rashdriver this school is getting very tough to transfer majors outside your college - meaning economics is in Liberal arts college and CS is in Dwight Look Engineering College. The concept of just ‘getting in’ and then work it from there is very high risk. Will some people manage it? Yes. Will everyone manage it? no

Trying to move into CS is going to be quite difficult - if you’re thinking of going that path I would recommend an email to the department to see what the requirements/possibility of transfers would be. Do NOT assume you can just move around to other majors - that is a concept of your parent’s generation NOT today’s. They may/may not even allow it - that is a decision made at the department level - ask there. go on tamu.edu search bar & find a contact in CS to ask.

@aggiedaughterENG so you’re saying that I’m guaranteed to get engineering at college station after I complete the engineering at Galveston? Is 3.5 GPA means a grade c or better?

You are already a College Station Student in the Dwight Look College of Engineering. I know it is confusing, trust me a lot of parents were at the Q&A session. It took a minute to but I understood what they meant by that answer. Only difference is “zip code”. You are only required to do your first year at Galveston campus because that is the program you were selected for your general engineering curriculum. During our tour of the campus, the "students were referred to as Dwight Look Engineering students because you are technically not a Galveston student. What is important that you need to understand is that you have a seat reserved for you in any of the 16 engineering disciplines taught at Texas A&M including the 2 taught at Galveston campus which is Ocean and Maritime Technology. If you have have a 3.5 GPA at the end of your first year, and you have Bio Medical, Chemical, Petroleum then you will have to obviously go to College Station to complete your degree as those engineering majors are not currently offered at Galveston Campus. Now, if you chose to major in Ocean or Maritime Technology, then you will stay at Galveston to complete your degree as that is the only campus that you can get it from. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.

@LoveAM A 3.5 would require you to get at a minimum 1/2 A’s and 1/2 B’s.

There are no weighted grades at TAMU. You only receive A =4.0 B=3.0 C=2.0 D=1.0 F=0. There are no pluses or minuses either. You can combine them based on your total units taken. You could actually also do mostly A’s and a C depending on your units and still get a 3.5. It is straight forward, sum of (# units X grade points) divided by # of units taken = GPA.

Wow so it’s not easy to get a 3.5 then, I am pursuing petroleum engineering so I guess I would transfer to college station regardless ? @aggiedaughterENG

Yes, you would transfer to College Station unless you choose to major in any of the maritime fields @ Galveston Campus. No, it will not be easy but like the department head of Maritime Technology Engineering told us during our tour, " If you got accepted to Dwight Look, congrats as this is not an average program or easy one to get accepted into. That being said, bad news is that most of you won’t make it either". Not to discourage you or anyone wanting to major in Engineering at Texas A&M, but this is an elite world class program for a reason. If you truly want to major in Engineering @ Texas A&M, then you will spend a lot of your time trying to achieving that goal. This program isn’t for the faint of heart and if you are looking for an easy way to get a good grade, there is always a History Major in your future. That last part was a joke by the dept head when he was explaining why the program is so competitive and should be excited that you get an opportunity to do this and like I said, this isn’t easy discipline to get a degree in. Some engineering disciplines have minimum GPA’s they will accept for admittance but I highly suggest shooting for that 3.5 or better regardless. Congrats LoveAM and good luck as my daughter will be attending Galveston through this program and she couldn’t be more excited for her opportunity as well as you should too. Hopefully you will choose to do this program.

Did anyone else awaiting schol decisions see a new requirement for ‘Student Data Form’ appear on their Financial Aid portal on Howdy?

@osmdad D already accepted but she did receive a Student Data Form request under Financial Aid portal.

@hmays1 You mean, she already received some schol and the Data Form appeared later…? Congrats… ! What schol did your dot receive…?

I got the same request, no scholarships yet though

Sorry, I thought schol=school. Yes, she received a merit scholarship - I can’t remember the name, sorry - but it wasn’t one of the major ones. Nice and appreciated, but looks kind of puny on the spreadsheet next to some of the others. LOL.

@osmdad yeah I just saw that. I filled it out.

@aggiedaughterENG if I filled out the FAFSA for a&M college station, do I still need to add a&M Galveston on the application or its gonna receive from college station?
