@anitapitamom BFA Screen Acting. If I’m not mistaken she put down BFA theater as a second choice but the email said nothing about that one.
@anitapitamom I’m sorry that was wrong information on my last post to you. The email says Department of Theater would like to invite you to audition. It does not mention a specific major so I assume they consider you for all your choices at the audition.
My D is going for straight acting so she won’t need to worry about a dance call. so if Guthrie is at 10:10 on Saturday I should have plenty of time to schedule Chapman later that afternoon shouldn’t I?
I should say so. My daughter is an MT major, and she did two and three auditions a day. Not every MT school does a dance call at Unifieds.
@marg928, you can definitely schedule more auditions a day for straight acting. Also, check the school’s website to see if it specifies how much time to block for auditions. Some schools try to give the on campus experience at unifieds and may request that you set aside hours long blocks. That will help you better determine how many auditions you can schedule per day.
D just received notification of a nice academic merit scholarship to one of her sorta-safeties (less competitve, but still an audition BFA)! I am pleased, because it is more than I heard that kids generally receive-but terrified, because the money stuff is getting real, and I am sad that it MUST play a huge part for us in this process.
@owensfolks, as a single parent I feel your pain. Money was a huge part and kept my daughter from going to a school she was accepted to that’s considered a really tough accept but was far too expensive.
Guthrie only takes 15-30 min. Just leave about a 30 min cushion in case they are running late and also enough time to get to chapman’s location.
@lincoln12 sure… it is West Texas A&M. It is a true diamond in the rough! Great talent, program and professors!
@momma2a YEA! Congrats! We have talked about this, but I have loved every one of WT’s productions that I’ve seen in the past 2 years. According to 2 of the girls we know who have been through the BFA audition process and have seen productions at other schools said WT’s production of Jane Eyre (last spring) compared favorably in quality & talent to other more well-known & competitive programs, including Texas State. The students we know in that program right now do not feel like they are missing out on any of the performance training they would be getting in another BFA program. I think WT is an excellent safety, that may not be considered a safety for much longer as the word gets out…
@WTXMom I sent you an email… LOL
I have a question for those of you who submitted the prescreens to U Michigan. How long of a cut each of your songs was? The requirements state AT LEAST 32 bars. Anybody submitted full songs? Would be grateful to hear from those who submitted and passed as well. I am unsure as to what D has to submit exactly. Any of you did not submit the additional (optional) dance video, and passed?
Thanks a lot!
Does anyone know a good way to plan enough time for auditions at unifieds? I have scheduled my first audition and I’m trying to see how many I can fit in a day. I’ll be attending the Chicago unifieds. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks
@bwaybelter how many are you trying to schedule? Schedule them one day each of the days that you plan to be there-or one in the am, one in the pm. Then fill in, as you get more opportunities to schedule. Keep in mind that you may hear back from a school that will say “your audition is THIS day at THIS time.”
@bwaybelter - it is usually pretty easy to schedule at least 3-4 auditions per day, and more are certainly possible depending on how many dance calls are required, how long each audition block is, what your personal stamina/stress level is, etc. Its not that hard physically to do lots of auditions in one day, but the mental stress can build to difficult levels for some people doing 4+ auditions per day, especially if things go poorly at an audition, you are not treated well at an audition, or if a school is running behind schedule. As noted in a previous post, some schools ask for large blocks of time, in particular some of the most well-known and most popular schools, and that may make it difficult to schedule more than 2 or 3 per day. Another complication may be commute time if audition locations are scattered around at different facilities.
You can also schedule walk-ins while you are there to fill in empty slots in your schedule, but you can’t count on getting walk-in slots at any particular school - walk-ins are a total “crap shoot” (to use a technical term from Guys and Dolls). Most walk-in slots are at the more regionally-focused programs, although most of the UK programs seem to have walk-in slots available every year.
One approach would be to schedule your schools in order of preference, beginning with your favorite program, and then work down your list, fitting in other schools in the slots that you have left. If possible, always try to balance “packing them in” (to keep time open for more auditions) with “give yourself some time to breathe” (so that you don’t end up a nervous wreck at the end of the day).
Follow up to audition experiences - D received an email from Pepperdine saying that she was admitted to the theatre department if she is admitted to the university. So I guess she will have to wait until March-April to know for sure. For others auditioning, she received the email 3 days after her audition.
congrats @anitapitamom. Pepperdine was on the long list but I got a little spooked by the religious aspect. Have you visited there? How was the feel apart from the beautiful view?
@EmsDad sent you a PM!
@marg928 My daughter goes to a private Christian school so she felt right at home. We loved that the program is academically rigorous and being a BA rather than a BFA, she will have a more well rounded liberal arts education. We also are impressed with their Study Abroad programs, ranked as some of the best in the world. Pepperdine is ranked #50 in National Universities so she will have a good education if this acting thing doesn’t work out lol.
No final decisions made - she still has auditions at TCU, SMU, USC, UA and waiting on decisions from LMU, UT and all of the UC’s,
It is gorgeous and the dorms are to die for! They even have maid service - talk about spoiled lol!
One more thing - my daughter isn’t a dancer - strong voice and actor, but not experienced in dance. Pepperdine isn’t as heavy into dance and required 16 bars of a song and 2 monologues but no dance call. Perfect for our daughter! But may not be a great fit if your daughter likes to dance.
