Class of 2022 RD Discussion Thread

Just got something else in the mail from WashU. Have no idea what the velcro strap thing is even for. Their “gear” this year is very strange.

@dogsrlife1317 yeah I have no idea what the velcro thing is – my best guess is that it is meant to go on your desk or something.

@dogsrlife1317 @ihopeigetin1234 The velcro thing is to wrap around your backpack handle thing.

DD has applied for Biology major, but her acceptance letter says admission to Arts & Sciences, and the major is not mentioned. Does this mean that she was not admitted to her major? If anyone knows WashU procedure please share. Thanks.

@bsmdint For WashU, the major listed in the student’s application is not binding, but rather an indication of likely interest. Your daughter is free to select any major by February of her sophomore year. In fact, she can even select a major in another division (Architecture, Art, Business, or Engineering), but she needs to spend at least one semester in Arts & Sciences before switching into another division. More details about this are available at http://bulletin.wustl.edu/undergrad/admissions .

At most private schools, students enter as undeclared majors. This is different from public schools like the University of California, where the major is often declared before the student matriculates and it can be difficult to switch after that if space is not available.

Thank you @mdphd92, I was starting to get worried if she was considered as Undeclared in Arts & Sciences. DD chose WashU only for its strong Biological Sciences program, so I hope she will get what she wants…

Ok, I got it now. Thanks @mdphd92

Anyone know how many waitlisted there are and how many usually get off the waitlist?

wait do they provide airline tickets for spring welcome? Also for bear days?

I’ve just been accepted to WashU’s Scholars Program in Medicine! Has anyone else received the news?

@BluePanther Congrats!
Great school and program. What are conditional requirements: MCAT and UG GPA to retain reserved seat at Med school?

@Volunteerism Thanks! The GPA requirement is a 3.8, while the MCAT score needs to be at least the 97th percentile. These requirements are uncommonly high for a BS/MD program, which is why I’m still considering other programs as well (RPI/AMC, UMKC, etc.)

@BluePanther
Yup. The conditional requirements are a killer. If you can achieve those requirements then you would not need the program in the first place… IMHO. It would also lead to very stressful UG experience.

@Volunteerism For some reason, the students I talked to (who are currently freshmen in the program) were not concerned with the requirements. They actually said they liked them because it simultaneously made them eligible for any medical school in the country if they chose to apply out (which you can do while maintaining your WashU seat).

Do you know anything about the rigor of WashU courses? It seems to have a reputation of being a tough grader but I would love to talk to more current students about its reality.

@BluePanther
I guess thats kind of a “half-full vs half-empty” assessment but in both cases true. I am not sure how the grading is nor what the average school gpa or average pre-Med gpa is. Something to definitely dig into. That would be more meaningful that feedback from a few students which may not represent your situation. Good-Luck!

I guess we are getting close to having a parent start a WashU Class of 2022 group on Facebook. I can say that 99% of the posts have been helpful. Just be sure not to do the following. And yes people have done this:

(1) Don’t talk about calling DD/DS and mentioning every detail. I don’t care if your DD forgot to do their laundry and is down to her last 2 pairs of underwear. Mom just humiliated their kid in front of an audience of 500 people.

(2) And seriously did your son really break your retainer while eating a Happy Meal and threw it away in a garbage can? And went dumpster diving to try to find it? Explain that to the orthodontist. Just say that your kid broke his retainer and needs an orthodontist recommendation.

(3) Don’t be Tiger Mom or Soccer Parent and threaten to call the admistration when the average on the first Calculus or Chemistry midterm is low. The first midterm results tend not to be so great. The kid needs to realize that this is not high school and figure out how to get the help needed, whether it’s joining study group or going into office hours. And there are likely school staff/faculty members in the parents group as well so you probably marked your kid.

(4) Asking about the fraternity/sorority rush process is fine, but don’t brag about how your kid got a bid while his or her roommate who was trying for the same frat/sorority failed to get one. Be considerate.

(5) No humble (or not so humble) brag about how your kid made Dean’s List. Yes there are students who did not do so well first semester and will take some time to adjust. See #4

(6) Don’t sell anything. Recommend services but mentioning a free/discounted plane ticket if you sign up makes you a shill.

(7) You can say classes are tough and need extra work to do well in, but don’t say that the program is bad and you regret sending your kid to the school.

Hi, is anyone else going to the Celebration Weekend this week (Thursday-Saturday)?

I was but decided to attend Vanderbilt so I cancelled flight reservations etc. I heard it’s a blast though.

@BluePanther, my daughter and I are.

How can I get the link for WashU Class of 2022 group on Facebook?
