Class of 2023 - CSB Honors group

@ucf2019 Thank you very much.

Just as an update to anyone who was trying to follow CS path CSB applicants. I just got an acceptance thing on the portal.

Congrats! Did you also get into Turing?

@HoustonTxDad @Alec2435 Accepted to Turing but Deferred without Interview from CSB if that is possibleā€¦ Hoping for the best

for future BHP applicants: iā€™m OOS, interviewed for BHP in early Jan, and was ultimately denied from UTAustin entirely. so BHP interview does not mean McCombs acceptance hahah

Hi. I am applying to CSB (cs as my first choice) and going to have an interview. Can anyone give me an idea about the interview questions? Thanks! Will they ask anything specific about business background?

@alpharocks I was deferred for Turing.

update: I got into CS today. Would everyone admitted into CSB would receive a phone call even international student?

@Linndaqun I never got a call and I was admitted a few weeks ago

Congratulations @Alec2435.

It seems CSB is primarily a BHP+ some honors CS classes rather than BHP+Turing. This being the first year of CSB, we didnā€™t realize the subtle but important difference. My D also applied CS as first major. She applied only to Turing and CSB as her honors choices. So looking back if we applied Business as first major and BHP, CSB, it seems the process might have moved faster.

In any case, she was interviewed by BHP about a week back. We are now waiting on both Turing and CSB.

For next year CSB applicants, my suggestion is: If you truly want CSB, go with Business as your first major. BHP admits about 100-150 while Turing goes only up to 50.

OK got it! Thanks a lot. I am waiting for an accept!!!

@HustonTxDad A few things that I want to clarify.

First of all, with regards to the ā€œBHP+ some honors CS classesā€ vs ā€œBHP+Turingā€, at the admitted students event yesterday this was discussed at length. Basically, itā€™s the latter (ā€œBHP+Turingā€), with the one small exception that you do not have to do the Turing thesis (which many students donā€™t do anyway, ergo the 40% Turing graduation rate).

Additionally, I met many students there who were CS first and it didnā€™t seem like an advantage to go from the BHP route. Also, Turing, CSB, and BHP have wholly separate admissions teams. (My Turing admission came a few weeks after CSB).

Lastly, with the numbers, I canā€™t say for sure about BHP, but I know Turing admits 100 with a target enrollment of 50 and CSB admitted about 50 with a target enrollment of 20.

Thank you @Alec2435

Update from my end: D was rejected from CSB and waiting on Turing. I do not know how much BHP interview influenced the decision. According to my daughter, the interviewer was biased towards business side. In general there is an observation she made regarding her Alumni interviews: Recently graduated alumni are not the best at interviewing compared with aged alumni who are better listeners and engage in true conversation to truly learn about candidate rather than quick to judge.

Question regarding admitted students event yesterday: was it for CS or honors programs? I believe my D told me there is an invitation for her as she is admitted to CS but she couldnā€™t go due to school activity conflict.

Thank you for shedding light on CS vs Business route.

You are right on Turing admits 100 with a target around 50. My earlier posting should have been more clearer.

TBH, we are baffled by the current situation she is in. Her 1st choice is UT honors in CS (preferably CSB). She is a Val in one of Houstonā€™s (and Nations) top schools, did her AP CS in sophomore year and AP Cal BC in Junior with both scores at 5 and 1580 SAT, 800s in Math ii, Physics. Total AP classes she is doing: 15. NMF, Bunch of ECs and good (if not decent) recommendations, I can list moreā€¦

We will wait and seeā€¦

Good luck to you!!

My understanding is that BHP aims for enrollment around 120 with around 240 admits. With CSB being new this year, it is understandable that it is much smaller and will likely grow in future years. It will be a great program and a great opportunity for those that have been given the opportunity.

I think for the CSB program they want to see strength/background in both the Business and Computer Science areas so that could be why your daughter was rejected as if I recall @HoustonTxDad from past comments, she didnā€™t have any business activities or classes. If Iā€™m wrong, I apologize.

@srparent15 I think you are right about BHP 120-240 numbers.

I didnā€™t include my D business clubs/exposure for the sake of some level of anonymity here. During her freshman year in high school (where she was class president) she was asked by a senior to partner in a 2 member BPA team to compete local competition in business case section. They won first prize at the tournament. That high school senior is a junior now at UT in BHP. My D, didnā€™t find competitions as really challenging and didnā€™t continue that route. She chose to spend time on gaining additional knowledge in overall business and computer science. I think admission committees favor competition awards and club titles both on business side and coding competitions on CS side. I am not saying that is bad, and I agree that is one way to see studentsā€™ interest. But if you ask any CS prof. they will quickly tell you coding is only one component and sometime itā€™s not even the important component. Trust me on that, I had the privilege of working with a Turing Awardee (not UT Turing scholar). Similarly BPA/FBLA etcā€¦ business clubs will also help one get awards in mundane fields like SQL programming, Excel etcā€¦again they are not bad skills. My D knows the difference between business skills in tools like SQL/Excel, Financial Planning, Business case preparation, Strategy, Execution, Business Organization Structure, Business segments and Economy.

@HoustonTxDad Can you please update your Dā€™s latest status

Hey guys, does anyone know what the admissions rate for this program is like?

Do you know what are the math science requirement for CSB ?

If I recall they really want to see the higher level math classes already taken. She had taken Calc 3 in high school and also had taken 2 Computer courses. Not sure if they care what science they have had. She did take Physics C, but her year was the first year for CSB and she originally applied for that but then decided to switch to straight BHP (now CBHP) and couldnā€™t be happier. I think CSB is really hard to graduate on time (as is BHP) unless you have a lot of AP credit, or for BHP without the extra AP hours itā€™s hard to double major/minor. But kids do it. A bunch are in BHP/Plan 2 I think. She is not at all interested in Liberal Arts so definitely no interest in that.

Thanks so much. What is thought of as ā€œlotā€ of AP credit ? Is AP score of 4 considered good ? Did your D take any business course in HS?
