SWMomMA & CTCape - thank you both. Very helpful. We would also be driving about 4 hours from CT. Even UCONN just opened up for in-person tours. What concerns me the most is that if they won’t open up tours now, then they are likely to be overly reactive and cautious in the fall and go to remote classes at the drop of a hat. That needs to be a consideration when choosing schools this year.
Perfect. This is probalby exactly what we would do as well. Thanks again!
2025CTParent- you may be right. Or it may be that VT has had so few cases and this is why? One of the reasons I like UVM vs UMass was I figured there would be more of a chance for in person classes. But you make a very valid point. Going to keep a close eye on how things go there this semester.
My ds is applying to xfer out of UMass for issues related to the handling of Covid. I’ve spoken to a number of friends with kids at UVM and am satisfied at this point that they are handling it in a way we would be happier with. Feel free to pm me if either of you have specific questions.
Vermonter here – I believe UVM had in-person classes beginning last fall, and with teacher vaccinations beginning this week (including college profs) I don’t see them canceling in-person classes this fall. The travel policy asks that visitors quarantine (unless fully vaccinated), but no one is policing this. I’m thankful to hear parents here are visiting safely. I’m biased, but it’s a beautiful campus and humming little city on the lake; I wouldn’t discount it because the campus is closed. The state has been cautious from the start of this pandemic and the results show in our low number of cases.
Burlington is fabulous - UVM is integrated into the city enough that you can get a real sense of the University just by visiting Burlington- there is even a UVM bookstore on Church Street (off campus) to get UVM merch if you decide you need some. My daughter fell in love with Burlington 4 years ago - it was her perfect college town. Decided UVM was too large and sprawling and has spent the past four years at Saint Mikes instead. She absolutely loves Saint Mike’s and Burlington and is considering UVM for grad school. Vermont has been very cautious with Covid but it worked for them- she has had a great time skiing and hiking and other safe outdoor activities. My son just got his acceptance from UVM - got the same scholarship his sister got four years ago and is planning to visit in April.
Thank you! My oldest is actually at UMass so we are up to date on the Covid situation. He is off campus so it’s not been as bad. But absolutely no in person classes is a real bummer. Hoping he gets some face to face time in the fall.
DS is a freshman who was on campus earlier this semester, but decided to come home. He loves his classes, but I just don’t think they were prepared to deal with a bunch of freshman and not enough RAs in a pandemic…
Burlington is SO nice!!! We’ve gone on vacation there twice and visited the campus both times. The location is a big draw for my son. We use GoogleMaps Streetview a lot. Sometimes, not often, you can even use Streetview to go in buildings. I’d do what you can because it seems a shame if your children cross UVM off their list because they haven’t visited. The location is amazing! Mountain views. Gorgeous lake. Bordered by a bike/walking path. Fantastic college town. With a lovely campus perched right on top!
I just asked my wife - a UVM prof - about the campus being “closed.” She says you would need card access for the dorms and library, but that is it. Provided you visit during regular business hours, there won’t be anyone stopping you from visiting campus and poking around. I get how the university is not offering tours and such, but if you just came up on your own you would be fine. Burlington is a ghost town right now because of Covid-19, but it is a great college town. My own son would attend if he didn’t grow up 5 minutes from campus.
Hi from California! My S is considering the honors college at UVM. I haven’t really done my homework yet, but wondering if anyone knows about the best way to travel out of Burlington? We only have a regional airport (flies direct to LA, Denver, Chicago) on our end here, so it would be brutal but I can see him really enjoying life at UVM. On another thread I heard something about a new rail system to NYC. Thanks!
Does anyone know about waitlist probability for this year or if they wait until very late? My son got waitlisted (Engineering). He was waitlisted here and RPI but was able to get into some better Engineering programs (UDEL/CLEMSON) UVM was his first choice (really loves the campus and area) and he did send an email of continued interest. Common data shows low acceptance to waitlist.
I do not have information specific to UVM but many people think there will be more wait list activity this year as many students applied to more colleges this year than in the past due to the pandemic and of course kids can only go to one school. It is really hard to predict though. Last year schools went to the waitlist early in the process so I am hoping for waitlisted kids the same is true this year.
Thanks! I know some of my son’s friends who have applied to well over 18 schools. It’s crazy.
Hi from Vermont! Burlington Airport is served by several airlines. In better times folks fly in and out of Montreal as well.
I can’t imagine a fast rail system to NYC coming anytime soon, but I believe there are non-stop busses that get there in about 6 hours.
So what is/are the hub(s) that you use mostly from Burlington Airport in the US? Thanks @xcskimom.
I’m not sure as I haven’t flown much in 20 years! Hopefully someone else knows?
Chicago, NYC x2, Newark, Philly, Detroit, Charlotte, Atlanta are the main hubs with direct flights I can think of.
Oh great, thanks. Perhaps could do it in only two flights then. It was hard to get a sense of the size of the airport on the internet. Thanks @mike05401
Do you mind me asking… which hotel? My husband is taking my daughter in April to walk around and get a sense of the school/town. Thanks!
