I believe it is a separate application. Did your kid apply? My son is in! Tampa campus, Chemical Engineering, Fall 2023. He is a direct admit through NRP.

Did anyone receive merit in their email?

February 10th I believe if by priority date

Nope. But my son is auto merit and after that, not seeking aid. Hoping it is soon.

Yes he did the separate application for the Honors program. He is a Biomedical major Tampa Campus.

Just today the admission portal showed Fall Semester application was cancelled and a new Summer application was opened with the status admitted. Additionally applied major (Computer Science) was switched to Exploratory Math & Science. Still have not received notification email. Not sure what is going on but hopefully the email will explain.

Just checked [USF Portal] (Sign in to your account) and Bulls Bucks icon showed in bottom left. DegreeWorks showed credits accepted and calculated GPA as a few days ago.

Looks like they are still working on updating other things, providing access to additional portal applications etc.

Florida Universities except FSU will first consider you for the term you applied and if they cannot offer that for any reason they will look at alternative terms, in your case they offered you a summer start…
Some kids may be offered spring start where they have to go to another school (community college usually) for fall and start in Spring.
Also, Florida schools have a requirement of 9 credits over summer, most kids we know take 6 credits one summer and then one class on line another summer. so the summer start can help knock this out as well

Computer Science is a very high demand major so it looks like he was not offered that either. I would check on requirements to change to CS later.

Bottom line it looks like you applied Fall CS major
and based on everything they decided we can offer you Summer start and can’t guarantee the CS major
The Summer start change are usually final.
I would definitely reach out on requirements for getting into their CS major

Thank you for the information. I will follow up. I know that now all schools are the same, but just find it odd since he has been accepted directly in to CS from many more competitive schools and CS programs including Pitt, Penn State, and Rutgers and several schools with competition similar to University of South Florida such as NJIT, Drexel and Temple. Out of 17 schools who have issued decisions this is the first school this has happened. Could just be school specific due to a high number of CS students wanting to go to school in sunny Florida.

I will follow up and report back for others who experience something similar.

Just received admission notification:

We would love to have you join us in Bulls Country and have several options for you to consider. Please explore the opportunities listed below for your admitted start term to find the best choice for you.

  • Option 1: Arrive at USF and take two classes in-person in the 6-week summer B session starting June 26, 2023.
  • Option 2: Start online at USF during the 6-week summer B session starting on June 26, 2023.
  • Option 3: Attend the USF-Verto study abroad program in the fall and arrive at USF in Spring 2024.

For more information on how to move forward with each of these options, visit the Alternate Start Terms webpage.

Also, looking at the details on the study abroad, those students begin in the spring as a transfer student so there are pre-reqs for certain degrees. CS you must take certain courses and have a 4.0 GPA to get accepted as a transfer.

It’s the sunny weather premium. My understanding is that the number of applicants to FL state schools has increased dramatically in recent years. OOS students also cannot exceed 10% of total enrollment in Florida state schools too IIRC, so that probably limits total admissions as well for OOS. My kid was admitted summer 2023 as well, albeit not for CS.

Congrats on your acceptance!

I was not aware of that. Here in NC it is 18%. I would think 10% is low considering athletics at the larger schools.

Wondering if anyone has received merit offers yet?

The merit scholarships came in dc’s letter of acceptance last month.

Okay. Just received acceptance a little over a week ago and AFAIK haven’t received and acceptance letter yet. Is it available in the admission portal somewhere or does it only come by mail?

It came both ways for my dc. Portal first and a day or so later, mail. I think they were identical letters though.

We got an email with the financial aid offer that included merit but it was missing a automatic scholarship that my son is eligible for. We have emailed scholarship office and tried to call several times to no avail. It is a bit frustrating because without that $$, USF is a no go for us. We would love to visit and put a deposit down but are in limbo!
