Classes?

A bit worried.

Entering freshman, already enrolled in classes

Fall Classes:

Econ 11 (McDevitt) 4 units
Management 1a (Gardner) 4 units
Physiological Science 5 (Diet and Exercise) 5 units
Programs in Computing 10a 5 units
Stats 19 (Fiat Lux) 1 unit

Total: 19 units

How hard? The orientation counselors warned me against taking more than 3 courses, and I thought that it should not be a problem, but I am starting to feel a bit uneasy seeing how most other students seem to have a significantly easier load.

How much should I be studying for this?

Just some background on me, I am quite fluent in programming (Java, C, Perl, etc). Not too familiar with the newer languages though, but still Programs in Computing should be easy enough. Judging by the name, diet and exercise should not be too hard. Stats 19 is just a fiat lux so that should be easy as well.

The hard ones will be econ 11 and management 1a. How hard will it be with these two classes as an entering freshman? BruinView seems to have diverse opinions on the profs that teach these two classes. Many (60%) of the comments say that the professors are quite challenging. Is that accurate, or is it just students that got weeded out of the business economics major venting? Any advice?

try bruinwalk also

I meant that I tried BruinWalk, not BruinView. Sorry about the confusion.

yay I'm in your Fiat lux

I took 15 units but 2 units are the civil engineer intro which is pass/no pass... if you are confident with your study skills why not do it... imma wait til I finish fall quarter to see if I should increase my load...

just try it out, because you have a certain period of time (depending on whether courses are impacted or not) to drop a class fall quarter. within a certain window it won't show up on your transcript at all, and there will be no fee.

so there's no harm done checking it out, as long as you mind the drop deadlines. if it feels ok, stick with it. if one class is killer, drop it and take it some other quarter!

The only thing I see that is a major red flag, everyone at orientation heavily suggested no econ or management classes for freshman especially 1st quarter. Not even just the oc's, did you go to the econ meeting? Both department heads said don't even think about it. So to take both an econ and a management coupled with how much you're taking seems like a bad idea.

so now that we have our classes, how do you find out what textbooks are needed? can/should we buy them now?
would you guys suggest buying them online or at the bruin store?

Go to the ucla store online, on the left there will be a list of stuff it starts with bearwear. one should be textbooks, click on it and then it should ask for your ucla id, last name, and the quarter. it automatically checks your enrolled classes and tells you what books you need (required and optional) and their prices.

here's the link actually: <a href="http://www.uclaestore.com/ucla/textbook_student.asp?ref=ucla%5B/url%5D">http://www.uclaestore.com/ucla/textbook_student.asp?ref=ucla</a></p>

Econ 11 is taught by a good professor, but takes up an average amount of time. PhySci 5 is a bunch of memorization right before the exams. PIC10A is not hard compared to CS 31 (in terms of the work), but it requires some time and a bit of busy work. Management 1A might be mildly difficult for a first quarter student.

I think you'll have to study a lot, if not a few hours everyday to clear up your notes, and do homewrok.

Well if it makes you feel any better, although your schedule shows 5 classes you only have 2-3 real classes:

fiat luxes are a joke and just p/np so its not really considered a class

phy sci 5 is a gpa booster course

and pic 10 is also a breeze if you have any remote programming background

Study a lot, ouch. I had expected as much. Econ 11 + Management 1a shouldn't be too killer I hope. Suppose I only had these two classes and nothing else? Would that be hard?

you need a minimum of 12 or 13 units a quarter

suppose i had only those two courses though cause the 3 other courses i am taking are rather insignificant

Econ 11 uses a lot of math; algebra, exponential and logarithmic functions, single-variable and multi-variable differentiation. If the book you're using is Microeconomic Theory by Nicholson, its pretty much useless unless your professor gives lousy lecture notes (never had McDevitt so I wouldn't know).

For PhySci5, memorize the course reader and you'll be fine.

For Mgmt 1A, if your book is Financial and Managerial Accounting 2nd ed. by Wild and Chiapetta, I have it used and am willing to sell for $80 :D

Econ 11 is your weeder course. Usually people don't recommend taking it fall quarter, at least as a freshman. Management 1A I also heard was hard from a couple of my friends who took it last spring. I think with those two combined you might have some trouble if you don't manage your time very, very well.

Physi 5 I heard was easy. However, my friends who took it last year absolutely despised it and told me to stay clear of it. The difference in these opinions comes from the fact that there is Professor Barnard teaching fall quarter. His midterm is supposed to be easier so I believe that's the determining factor. My friends took it only with Roberts, and perhaps that's why they were in so much pain from it. Or at least, absolutely hated it. And yes, it is strict memorization.

I would go with what liyana said though. Take it and look at the syllabi and such. See if you could balance the workload with club activities. If you think you can balance well and manage your time effectively, go for it. If not, drop a class. =)

I would also recommend using the search function in this forum to look for past threads containing information about these classes. Might be useful to you. =)

how is History 1C. it says "The Staff" as the teacher. is this a difficult class? is there a lot of writing?

yay im in your fiat lux too
along with yahooo

how's honors physics? i hear that it's easier than regular. is that true? if i decide to sign up for honors physics for life sci majors, do i need to be in honors during all of the sequence?

and how's the LA cluster?
