@drewh02 @HokieCrazy where do you see decisions? In an email?
@mesilks log into the honors app website where you completed the application; beside Decision it says “View Decision Letter.”
@Tigerwife92
Thanks! Just looked again on the app site and see a decision letter now. It wasn’t there when I checked earlier.
They sent an email! the decision is in your portal
This years admissions must have been hella competitive. And just know there are tons of amazing options out there! I was luckily enough to get in but tbh I still have no clue how.
I believe students can reapply to Calhoun there the first year as well!
My son was declined also. He has a 1550 SAT and a 5.12 GPA. The decision had to have been heavily based on essays. He knows a girl from his school with much lower stats that got in. Sad that four years of working your tail off comes down to a writing contest??♀️
@drewh02 Shucks I hate to hear that you were denied. My son was denied as well
D20 was accepted! Definitely makes her lean more towards Clemson at this point. Will probably make a final decision after Tiger Days on the 6th.
My son is out on his V-Day date and I haven’t talked to him about it. I sort of doubt he will apply for reconsideration, as I think that would likely take something earth-shattering to change their decision, and he doesn’t really have anything other than his straight-A’s and all AP classes, which they already knew.
My son had similar stats, and I couldn’t agree more. My son is a Computer Science/Math kid with off-the-chart stats, but doesn’t write creative essays. I think the schools are off on their evaluation criteria sometimes.
@HokieCrazy, my son is the same. A computer science/math guy. He will be applying for the reconsideration. I’m grateful @drewh02 mentioned it. Since application time he has been named a NMF, a 2020 US Presidential scholar nominee, and is taking two DE computer science classes. I told him it couldn’t hurt??♀️
But, as with your son, I told him he will land where he’s supposed to, and any college will be lucky to have him. Good luck to your son!
Don’t know if my son got accepted or not. He is on a camping trip with spotty cell phone service and I don’t know his login info.
He is also a Comp Sci major with similar stats to the other ones that got declined so I’m not optimistic.
But I will say that Honors isn’t the be all, end all at Clemson. In fact, my son was undecided if he would accept if offered. I know the scheduling is nice but more writing in honor classes which is not his favorite.
Plus we know several recent grads with nice jobs that opted not to participate in the honors program.
So don’t discount Clemson if you don’t get in honors. You can still get a great education at a great school.
@86grad, thank you, that’s great to hear! I’m wondering if the merit money will be less based on the decline?
I think they are separate. So there shouldn’t be a change.
@86grad, thanks. You don’t happen to know what the merit is like? I’ve seen the merit page on the website, but there aren’t any numbers.
We are in state.
I don’t know exact numbers but I’ve heard that there has been cuts to merit. Don’t know if that means fewer students or less per student. But most instate students do not receive very much merit. I think in the past most high stat kids received around $3k if they were Palmetto Fellows. Need based was more if you qualify, which we don’t.
@86grad, thank you.!
@HokieCrazy I’ve got one Calhoun Honors bio major and another CS major at the University of Chicago. My Clemson student turned down a lot of bigger names because she had Calhoun plus the Max OOS merit from Clemson. It’s turned out to be a good experience for her and she’ll apply to grad school with great grades and debt free. That said my UChicago student has had an extraordinary experience, and as a CS major has a reasonable expectation that her employer will contribute to grad school. With perspective on both sides of this fence I’d suggest that you son go to the best school he can get into if his heart is firmly with CS. There is a lot of opportunity in the tech marketplace for well prepared tech majors.
My daughter was accepted to the Honors College. We are in Ohio. She is very excited but waiting to see about merit scholarships.
@HokieCrazy I absolutely understand. I cannot see myself applying for reconsideration either, as I have nothing new to present except for the first semester grades, which may have increased my GPA by <.01 points.
