Did everyone receive an email about Calhoun decisions? Or is everyone just checking they app sight?
My daughter was accepted into the honors college - still waiting on scholarship decisions, but Clemson is looking more and more like a great choice for her. She’s an English kid so we are happy that they look at essays and not just test scores. Her scores were at the low end of the honors minimums. However her grades were on the high end. It looks like they are looking for a diverse honors class and not only students with high test scores, which are not the only predictor of college success or qualifications - which is why they have a holistic review.
D20 was accepted into Calhoun Honors. She did not wait for the decision; she committed to Clemson last week. I don’t know why one profile is chosen over another. I do know there are so many kids who deserve this recognition, and I hope you will apply for reconsideration.
@SavMom9801, you’re right, high test scores aren’t the only predictor of college success. I’d say actually attending college classes is a great predictor. And, seeing as my son will graduate with 80 college credits. Has been taking college classes at a four year university since freshman year…some of which are high level math classes(math 340, 344 for example) that are usually taken junior or senior year, with A’s in all of them, I’d say he’s better prepared than most. But, creative essays are good too. ??♀️
@riverdays There was an email that directed D20 to login to her honors app to see the decision letter.
My son was declined. He was early acceptance Comp Sci. with 35 ACT and 5.3 GPA. He was leaning more toward RISE than Honors so didn’t really care. He has zero interest in appealing or applying after freshman year. He is going in as a second semester sophomore and is shooting to get his BS in two or two and a half years.
Congrats to everyone who got in and I again will say not getting in shouldn’t be a deal breaker if you are considering Clemson.
He still has a lot of schools to hear from, including VT, WashU, and Vanderbilt. I personally wasn’t all that thrilled about Clemson CS, but we’re still coming down in March for a visit. With the merit decrease rumor and the denial from Calhoun, it’ll take a lot to happen for him to choose Clemson over any of those other schools. We’ll see.
@86grad D20 wants RISE as well! She was sold after the first tour she took sophomore year.
@Tigerwife92 @86grad How do you get into RISE? Is it just a selection on the residence selection after choosing Clemson? VT has something similar and my son is very interested in it. So, it’d be good if RISE worked the same way.
My son really likes RISE. The only reason he applied for Honors is the scheduling advantage. Honors has a nicer first year dorm too, but it is also a good bit more expensive.
@HokieCrazy it’s one of the choices when they do the housing contract. I think, like other housing, acceptance is based on admissions application date.
Here is a good place to start.

It is the largest community on campus with two high rise dorms. Honestly, the dorms aren’t the nicest, they were around when I attended Clemson in the 80s. They are cheaper though and are old style, which may make socializing easier.
Anyway, didn’t mean to hijack the thread so should probably start a new one.
@86grad thx for info
My son is going into general engineering, did not get into honors. now we need to figure out the best dorm choice so everyone’s information is so helpful
My DD was also accepted into Calhoun Honors
Created a 2024 dorm discussion board

@Tigerwife92 Thank you so much for answering my question about the email notification. My son did not receive an email but I saw that the decisions were out. I was waiting for him to look without me prompting him-like everyone else I had no idea what the decision would be. He thought to check late last night and he got in but never got an email prompting him to check the portal.
Son was accepted to honors but his decision will depend heavily on scholarships/aid. He was also offered UNC Honors, to which we are in state, so that price tag is going to be hard to beat. I’m sure spots will open up within the program closer to May as people compare aid packages and make their final decisions, so I would say to those denied, definitely apply for reconsideration!!
Son accepted to Honors. Website is pretty vague about what that means. Can anyone with experience point me to more insight? Or provide your thoughts on positives and negatives? Would appreciate any help here. He is struggling with decision. Would love some insider thoughts.
I have two tigers in the Honors college, a Junior son, Econ major and Sophomore daughter Communications major so I can offer my take on it all. Shed your notions of high school honors tracks or classes. It’s very different. Being in the honors college at Clemson is definitely what you make of it. It’s not exclusively it’s own “college within a college” like other schools can be, therefore students can take advantage of as much or as little as they’d like to. And I’ll reiterate that it truly is up to the student to take advantage of what if offers. This holds true, of course, for all of college. Keep in mind that there is a $1000 fee for Honors so make sure its a good value for your student.
If you didn’t get in and want to, you can apply your first semester of school and be in for the second semester (much easier application process). With the exception of living in the dorms, you’d have all the perks available beginning in January. Also, if you didn’t get in, don’t despair. It’s gotten very competitive over the past few years as applications have increased significantly and many qualified people do not get in.
The only actual requirements are to take one honors class per semester (not a harder class, just different in nature, sometimes less busy work etc). and to keep the required GPA up.
Some students make it their main social group by living in the dorms and attending the many functions and events they offer from a piano jam night to dinner with the faculty to study abroads and travel grants for certain educational trips. Some kids find “their people” within honors, others find them elsewhere. I suggest following them on Instagram to get a vision for some of the social events and extra things they offer.
The academic perks are early scheduling and honors classes. The seminar classes are optional and many count for Gen Ed classes, which is nice. Other students prefer to take an honors section of one of their regular courses for their honors class. The honors classes are not necessarily more work or harder, just different in nature. As for early scheduling, it’s nice and sometimes helpful, but also, (in spite of the panic you will hear from students and parents at registration time), all kids eventually get the classes they want and need and will likely have to take an 8am class and/or a 5pm lab at some point.
The dorms are very nice, quiet and the dining hall is right downstairs. There are suite style with their own bathroom that the students are responsible to clean. For some more social types or even those who come not knowing anyone, it may be too quiet. The doors to the suites must be kept closed (firesafe doors), so it’s can be hard to meet people. It’s more like apartment living since the bathrooms are within the suite. I’m sure the make up of personalities around you also plays into that.
My daughter wanted to live in Manning, the all-girls dorm, and it was a great place to meet lots of girls. She loved the atmosphere and “old school” feel of the dorm life there.
Both my tigers are very involved in all aspects of Clemson student life from student government to greek life to campus ministries to honors and several other student groups. They do a few things with honors, but it’s not their main focus at all. There are infinite options for being involved, pursing leadership positions, networking with faculty, undergraduate research and more that are all over campus. As @86grad said, it should in no way be a deal breaker for Clemson if you got in or not.
I hope that helps. Go Tigers!
Thank you for your insightful view! We are looking forward to learning more at Future Tiger Days!
