Clothing?

How do students who attend universities dress? I'm going to be going to college next year, and I don't want to look like a high schooler with a bunch of stupid name brand clothing.

I was thinking of buying clothing from PacSun and stores similar to that.. instead of this Abercrombie BS

They dress like… students who attend universities. Some schools in the South and probably Northeast might have a lot of students who dress preppy (think Andy Bernard on The Office), some private LACs might have a lot of people who dress like hipsters. Big state universities have a mix of everything. I’ve seen people dressed like preps, hipsters, thugs, skaters, slobs, pretty much anything you can think of at UMD.

As long as your clothes fit well you’ll be fine. When the weather is fair around here I usually just wear a t-shirt and jeans, or a t-shirt and a short sleeve button-down with jeans, etc. Which college are you attending?

Also, ultimately you should wear whatever looks best on YOU. Some people can really pull off the rough tough Marlboro Man cowboy look; I’d look like an idiot. Some people can pull off the hip hop artist look; I’d look like an idiot. Some people can pull off the casual-but-not-poorly-dressed look and I’m one of them (I like to think so, at least).

Winter:
hoodie with sweatpants/jeans
cardigan/sweater with jeans
Button down with Jeans
Boots/boat shoes/sneakers/loafers

Spring:
Polo/shirt/checkered or flannel shirt with 5-7" inseam shorts/jeans/chinos
white tee/cut-off shirt with gym shorts
Button down with Jeans
boat shoes/flip flops/sneakers

Frat:
Lettered shirt/hoodie/sweatshirt with shorts/jeans

Brands:
Patagonia, J Crew, Ralph Lauren, Express, Calvin Klein, Brooks Brothers

^I know I’m forgetting some brands

I go to a fairly rich school, all I’ve seen recently was northface jackets and leggings on girls, and northface jackets on guys with polos. spydersix has it, do what he says, also pick up some sperrys if you don’t some, IF you want to dress preppy. Also slim jeans, no baggy ones.

but that’s if you go to a school where people dress like that. I can tell you right now there are not many people at UMD who dress like that.

My school is like azim13’s. Although it varies, a homeless person was recently quoted in the local newspaper saying that Ann Arbor is a good place for the homeless people to be because they blend in with the students. XD

how do uaa schools dress? or midwest schools if that narrows it down better? i don’t want to be looking silly with my skater shoes and skate brand t-shirts in college if thats not the norm. also any preference to style of jeans most people wear?

Pretty much anything goes, as long as it looks decent. spydersix’s observation quite accurately describes how a large population of my university dresses.

The only way to really look like a high-school kid is to actually obsess too much in a particular image. Just do what feels natural and you’ll fit in.

For the most part, students at my school wear shorts, nothing fancy, and t-shirts that vary between highly branded to plain with logo’d stuff most popular. I go to school in a super hot, humid climate so things like polos that are too thick, even jeans sometimes are too hot. A lot of kids wear workout style clothes. Very laid back, chill campus fasion wise. Don’t over think it. Only specific tip: avoid heavily branded shirts, but this may be more of a personal opinion.

Oh ok, I look like a high schooler then. Great. I find these threads hilarious. You may not look like a high schooler but you’ll definitely sound like one if you’re going to be judgmental about what people wear. College is your opportunity to reinvent yourself. If you find people who don’t like the way you dress, don’t associate yourself with them. PacSun sounds fine. I personally like a few name brand stores but obviously you’re going to wear anything from them so I won’t worry about it.

No one cares, as long as you look good going out on weekends. Most people dress whatever to class, the ones that dress well to class try too hard.

By that philosophy, the people who get good grades try too hard in school.

People do care.

Except, IMO, it’s more of whether you look well put together than if you look dressy. A t-shirt and jeans will be fine in most schools, you just gotta wear a t-shirt that fits well and jeans that don’t sit below your knees.

Yeah, and the people that do care try to hard. Maybe I should have worded it better, like DC did. I mean that as long as you’re presentable, (most) people don’t care how well you dress, like in high school. It only matters when you’re going out for the night.

leather jacket
plain shirts from urban outfitters
medium-high end jeans
plain black shoes

that’s what i wear. I don’t wear anything that has a label on it.

** The staples **
Flanel shirt with a waffle cut or T-shirt underneath
Jeans (loose fit usually and darkish, no holes unnatural fraying)
Black Sneakers
If it is cold a hoodie

Other stuff I wear often but is a bit more formal
Oxford Shirts
Tallia Orange velvet jacket
Sport coat
Nicer Jeans
Leather Shoes

But they certainly care less than in high school. Maybe in high school kids sit around and think “Look what that geek is wearing. I’m going to spend my free time in class to tell them they look like a geek” or whatever. It’s not like that in college. You don’t have to deal with those kind of people. I mean, if you dress like a hobo, people might try avoid you but outside of that extreme, you’ll likely catch the attention of people who dress similar to you because they’ll guess that you’re a similar type of person. That’s how things usually work.

People wear what they want to wear. I honestly don’t see anyone in my school dressing to “fit in”… because “fitting in” doesn’t really exist here. 40,000 people go to my school… they don’t all dress the same way.

Band shirts and jeans for me. shrug

Ah well for us, people do dress up for class, which I think actually makes more sense, since college is preparation for a job and you can’t wear Nike shorts and tshirts to work. Not saying that I don’t have days where I wear exactly that outfit, but for the most part, I try to dress rather presentably.
