Cold calling/emailing companies for internships?

There's an abundance of opportunities for science/medical internships at university labs and at similar places, but I interested in those disciplines. I'm mainly interested in art (specifically, photography), business, and marketing. From what I understand, most investment banks do not take high school interns (unless there are connections involved, which I don't have) so it leaves art and marketing. I have a portfolio and resume readily available for photography and graphic design - I just have doubts whether, say, advertising firms would hire a high school intern.

What internships are available in this field, and what are the most opportune time to send out emails if I'm looking for a summer position?

Thanks.

I’m not too sure, but I thought this was interesting so…

maybe take some photos for the kinds of things those advertising firms need, and then show them the photos, asking for an internship? If they’re really good, the companies might be willing to let you try. If you plan on emailing the pictures though, make sure you watermark them or something…

sorry, I’m don’t really know what else you can try. Maybe intern at an art museum. I think one of my friends did that one summer. They often have summer internships (if you have one close by)

edit: or, you could start a photography business! that’s definitely a productive way to spend the summer, granted you get customers.

Actually, I’ve had my own freelance graphic design business since the middle of freshman year. I do logotype and other miscellaneous graphic work for smaller dotcoms. I’m interested in interning for a large advertising agency despite having my own personal freelancing work since I’m highly interested on how big-budget projects for multi-million dollar companies are conceptualized and executed.

I’m not too sure about starting a photography business, though it’s a pretty good idea. I’ve been doing concert photography for bands that have toured nearby (some of which have been published in the Rolling Stone, yay!) and won a couple of nat’l/int’l awards for general photography, but it’s difficult to start one’s own business in that field. There’s cutthroat competition despite the low pay. I’m a little more apprehensive about a photography business than a graphic design business since I work from home and face to face interaction with clients don’t exist - none of them know that I’m a minor, lol.

You’ve definitely gotten me thinking though - maybe I could do a newspaper internship? Pity most only take college students. I’ll try and compile some of my more “photojournalism” images and send them in for evaluation.
