College acceptances

mike, nic and mama02

Keep in mind that this is not about a school name, a building or a facility - it's about you. Many people in the business have not studied mt or drama in college or have not even attended college. Think Sutton Foster and others...
I firmly believe that at that audition they are not looking at what college you did or didn't go to. I think the only way a college really helps you, is very similar to any field - networking and connections.... ie many of these programs have graduated successfull producers, directors, etc... if you happen to audition for one of your own, it could play in your favor. Each of you are individuals and know what your goals and needs are. My advice, check out the curriculum and instructors very carefully and see if they seem to provide for those needs or areas you want to develop - and then make it happen.
Just like many great scholars, inventors and writers come out of State schools as well as Ivy's - the same happens in theatre.

Best of Luck - you all have the desire and passion and I know this will take you far.

Just got accepted to Millikin for their Musical Theatre BFA!

Sutton foster attended CMU for musical theater for 1 year, then got cast in Grease on broadway, so left. She doesnt have a degree because she never finished, but she did attend for a little!

mtfan-
Congrats!!! How did the other folks do at Millikin that day? How many girls and guys were there that day? My D would be your classmate if you both end up there.

Has your D decided to go there? There were 5 people there today and 4 were accepted (even they said that was rare, normally its only 1 maybe 2). I was the only guy and the rest were girls. I went down with two of my really good friends that I recently did a show with, they both made it. Right now Millikin is pretty high on my list but I'm pretty much waiting for my Penn State and BW decision letters, those are my top 3 at the moment. But theres a pretty good chance Ill end up there.

congrats mtfan! that's really awesome. a question for both mtfan and mama02girlz (and anyone else who may know)- did you visit Millikin? And if so, did you get to sit in on any acting classes? I have been looking in to their program, and it looks really good, but it's hard to tell whether the acting training is as good as the vocal training seems to be. Just wondering what your thoughts were about this, thanks!

mtfan-
D loved Millikin, but at my insistence she isn't making a decision until all the auditions I paid for, drove her to, and lost sleep over, are finished. I'm only half kidding here, but I think she should wait until she sees all the schools and then decide. She loved Millikin and we are beginning to hear more and more wonderful things since she has been accepted there. Her music teacher at school said that she knows some grads and they are excellent musicians and performers, and I respect this person's opinion greatly. I hope Millikin doesn't end up with too many kids, although they told us they would take a larger amount if that happened. I think word is getting out and they aren't as unknown as I get the impression they used to be. They accepted 3 the day we were there. When we visited, kids just kept asking how we heard of Millikin.....I thought....uh...its a well-respected MT school! She also has auditioned a few other places that she hasn't visited yet, so if she gets into any of these, I'm going to insist she visit them. I have no doubt Millikin will remain high on her list. She loved the faculty, the students were exceptionally nice, and the facilities were great. What more can you ask for? It'll be fun to see where all this ends up. Good luck with the other decisions, it won't be long before everyone is getting roommates and paying deposits and making all this real. It's such an exciting time for all of you. Enjoy!

Sorry, we did not get to sit in on an acting class. I do believe, however, that the entire program is strong. Just like every other school D has visited/considered/auditioned for, they can cite examples of ppl working in every field, including a picture in their current quick facts book of Joe Machota, the current lead role of "Sky" in "Mama Mia" on Broadway. They also do a New York showcase, although I believe you have to be one of the ones "chosen" to be in it. (Not entirely sure how that works.) While my D was auditioning, I spoke to another parent who is a professor at the U of Wisconsin. (His son was auditioning.) He had heard of Millikin through a colleague in Chicago (currently involved in theatre) who stated that they love Millikin graduates as they have a reputation for being consistently well-trained and great to work with. I have mentioned Millikin to some other ppl in the business, and they have always heard of the school and said they have a great somewhat undiscovered program. (Director of current school musical who spent time in Chicago, and others.) Hope this helps.

My D was one of the other 5 that auditioned at Millikin on Monday and was accepted....She's really excited and like the school A LOT. Downside...really far from home (New Jersey). Very grateful to now have a school for MT in her back pocket. The last two auditions will be less stressful, I'm sure.

Congrats to your daughter on Milliken!! It's so nice to hear all this good news! And you're right - the other auditions will now be a piece of cake!

rossji - Thanks so much!

Lynn, I am so happy to read your news! It is such a relief to know she is in a program at this juncture and it is a program she likes, to boot. It eases the stress over the rest of the audition process. Many congrats to her for this wonderful outcome.

lynnm, mtfan & broadwayblondie -
CONGRATULATIONS! It is a wonderful thing to see all the hard work start to pay off!

mike -
just as I hit the submit reply button I realized I should have said degree not school regarding Sutton Foster. Yes, she did attend for a year and decided that it was not for her and could not see it as a means to an end.

Best of luck to everyone who auditioned for MT programs this year. I know Hartt has finished their string of auditions on site and around the country...so I guess that means letters are going out soon! Hope everyone gets what they want.

I thought Hartt wasn't going to send our decision letters until April...?

I believe there is a date in April that is the cut off...but I know they try and send out letters ASAP. I remember them being early last year. I do not remember when I got mine three years ago.

add CINCINNATI CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC to my list of acceptances!!! :D

Broadway32nd....way to go! I am very happy for you....it all has worked out and then some. All the best.
Susan

Congratulations, Broadway32nd! What a string of achievements!

PS....Broadway32nd....do you remember that a few months ago, you were the nervous one....??? You have so many acceptances already! Be confident, girl and conquer the world ;)
