College Admissions Statistics Class of 2020: Early Decision & Early Action Acceptance Rates

Adding College of William & Mary:

The College of William and Mary accepted 5,095 students for the Class of 2020 April 1, a 35.4 percent acceptance rate.

With 14,380 applications for 1,520 spots — 1,500 in the main class and 20 in the St. Andrews-William and Mary Joint Degree Programme, — the College accepted students from all 50 states, as well as Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. However, after 11 years of an increasing applicant pool, the number of applications fell by almost 600 students, or 3.8 percent, from the class of 2019’s application pool size.

Even though Vanderbilt combines data and says the advantages to Ed 1 and Ed 2 are the same, this year, the ed1 rate was 30 percent and the ed2 rate about the same as regular decision. Ed1 and ed2 are by no means equally advantageous and Vanderbilt should be transparent with this information!

That’s why Vanderbilt is one of the schools excluded from the ranked list. ED1 and ED2 rates of admission can be quite different and combining them does not reflect a true rate of admission. For whatever reason, ED2 acceptance rates are much lower than ED1.

Surprised by Georgetown’s low EA rate. Any reason?

@hzhao2004 they purposely keep the EA rate below the RD rate. I think the reasoning is that typically more privileged applicants apply EA (a lot of people might not even know EA is an option). I also thought I saw an article where the dean of admissions said something along the lines of: we don’t want to be one of those schools where the only way to get in is to apply early, the process is stressful enough and we don’t want to add to those anxieties.

@hzhao2004 Georgetown has a lower admittance rate early than it does regular. I think one reason is that the Georgetown automatically defers every student that applies early and is not accepted; that means more people will apply to Georgetown early because it is truly no strings attached. Also, the Dean of Admissions at GU is pretty hostile to early applications. Here’s his statement about EA policy and probably explains why it is just as tough, if not tougher, on early applicants than on regular decision applicants:

Georgetown University’s longtime dean of admissions, Charles Deacon, said he favors early action because students should be as sure in May of where they want to attend as they were in November. He calls it a ‘‘student-centered’’ approach to admissions, in contrast to ‘‘enrollment management’’ techniques in vogue at many schools.

‘‘No matter what anybody tells you, the early pool favors those who are more advantaged,’’ Deacon said. ‘‘They’re the ones who have been better advised. They know more from their families. There’s an advantage, for sure, and that plays itself out particularly at the early level.’’

Adding Dickinson College:

After receiving a record number of applicants for its class of 2020, Dickinson’s acceptance rate has dipped to a three-year low of 42.7 percent for this year’s admissions cycle. The college accepted 2,638 students this year, compared to 2,838 students for last year’s class. This resulted in a 42.7 percent acceptance rate, compared with 47.1 percent for the class of 2019 and 48.3 percent for the class of 2018. Dickinson saw a slight decrease from last year in the number of Early Decision and Early Decision II applications; however, the number of students applying under Early Action and Regular Decision each increased.

Skidmore posted an acceptance rate for the class of 2020 at 29%.

@Britsmum The article about Skidmore was pretty confusing that’s why I just used an estimate. If you have a different source for your information please share it.

On the one hand, the Admissions article http://skidmorenews.com/new-blog/2016/3/11/skidmore-to-become-more-selective said the rate was roughly 30%:

“We predict that our acceptance rate will be about 30 percent this year,” said Bates.

On the other hand, the article stated this:

If admissions ends up needing to use their wait list they could end up having a slightly higher acceptance rate “but we are projecting now that our acceptance race will be less than last year” Bates said. Last year the overall acceptance rate was 37 percent.

I inferred this to mean that the 30% acceptance rate really meant, “an acceptance rate in the 30s” because Admissions is really saying the acceptance rate is just under the 37% figure for last year, and could actually be higher than last year after the waitlist number is finalized. This makes sense because a one-year change of 7% in the acceptance rate is really really rare and it doesn’t seem possible with the application numbers that Skidmore disclosed.

An article about Bates, but only application numbers. Anyone know how many they accepted?

All told, Bates received 5,356 applications to the Class of 2020. Of that grand total, several hundred were reviewed during two rounds of Early Decision. The balance, some 4,900 Regular Decision applications, were reviewed and decided upon in early March.

Ultimately, the goal of the 10-member Admission Committee’s decision-making is to enroll a class of approximately 500 first-year students come fall.

this is a faulty analysis since your RD analysis does not take into account deferral rates

for example
Stanford’s deferral rate this year was 7.7%
Harvard’s deferral rate is almost 10x higher at 75.7%

if you normalize for the deferral rate discrepancy by deferring everyone to normal admissions then it’s

Stanford = 3.1%
Harvard = 3.3%

It’s better to give the overall admission rate EA + RD to account for all the deferral games schools play (Harvard being the biggest offender).

notice that normalizing the deferral rate effect hardly changes Harvard’s RD rate since they defer practically everyone… normalizing it for Stanford impacts more dramatically since they defer practically no one.

I broadly agree, @sbballer . As I noted on another thread, the number of early applicants that Stanford REJECTED this year (6,376) was greater than the total number of early applicants to Harvard (6,173). I think Stanford has to be considered the most selective college at this point.
