College Admissions Statistics Class of 2020: Early Decision & Early Action Acceptance Rates

This little nugget in the Swarthmore article made me chuckle.

Keep up the good work @spayurpets.

No ED/EA updates that I could find. ED2 results are starting to be sent out; perhaps some schools will report their acceptance rates. Reposting last list:

To date, 13 out of the Top 20 Universities and 5 out of the Top 20 LACs (according to USNWR rankings) have reported their ED/EA numbers. Some notable exceptions include Columbia, Swarthmore, Chicago, Vanderbilt, Haverford, Wellesley and the 5Cs,

@spayurpets Vanderbilt’s should be out soon, they don’t release them until ED2 results come out

http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2016/02/a-record-high-for-applications/

Harvard releases some news about regular applicant numbers; they had 39,044 applicants for the class of 2020, a record and an increase of 4.6% over last year.

A little vague about exact application numbers, but Vanderbilt announced it had a 23.6% acceptance rate for ED1/ED2 combined

Vandy hasn’t released a number, but in the comments section (in reponse to a question), they state that approximately half the class has been filled by EDI and EDII.

Based on the Vanderbilt profile, the average entering enrollment class size is 1600, so half of that is 800 ED acceptances. Based on the reported 23.6% acceptance rate, that’s roughly 800 accepted out of 3390 ED1/ED2 applicants.

I think I understand how @goldenbear2020 did the math to estimate the BU numbers, and since the data are spread across two articles, it might help to explain. The adcom officer said that BU intended to fill 30% of the class of 3500 students through ED1/ED2. The second article states that ED1 filled 23% of the class of 2020, and there were roughly 1700 ED1 applicants. 23% of 3500 = 805 ED1 acceptances. 805 out of 1700 = 47.4% ED1 acceptance rate.

The remaining 7% of the admittees (30%-23%) were admitted ED2, which equals 245. The total number of ED2 applicants was stated as 1721, so 245 out of 1721 = 14.2% acceptance rate for ED2.

Thanks @spayurpets. The 30% figure came after ED2 decisions, so I believe it’s an actual figure and not an estimate or goal. It’s a bit surprising to see that the ED2 pool is apparently much weaker than ED1, but perhaps that makes sense since ED2 applicants likely struck out with their ED/ED1 school.

The higher ED1 acceptance rate is also probably due tot he fact that most athletes, faculty kids, and legacies apply ED1. ED2 kids are usually (but of course not always) kids who applied elsewhere ED1 but were waitlisted or denied, meaning they were less likely to have a coach’s strong support or strong ties to the University.

I had no idea these numbers were such hot commodities. At a UofC EA (ED? I can’t keep this straight) fete the dir of admissions gave out the numbers … I am sorry I do not recall them accurately. I believe it was 10% EA amid record # of applications both EA and RD necessitating an even lower anticipated admittance rate for RD. I think a figure of 8% was mentioned.

I cannot vouch for the accuracy of my recollection, unfortunately. Sorry!

Here’s info on Pomona, Pitzer and Harvey Mudd. http://tsl.news/news/5520/.

Harvey Mudd 16.6% 464 applicants
Pomona 19.4 %, 914 applicants
Pitzer 27.8%, 423 applicants

Adding Harvey Mudd, Pomona, & Pitzer. Scripps and Claremont McKenna not reported. Interestingly Pitzer does not appear to round up when calculating their percentages, so you can’t make the number of admittees match their reported percentage. Is that 1/10th of one percent so important that they need to fudge their statistics? I would expect that of Claremont McKenna but not the other 5Cs.

Relax @spayurpets. Remember that we’re working off of initial reports from student newspapers, not official CDS statistics. Especially for schools that offer ED2, there may be some uncertainty in the reports. Sometimes schools give ED applicants extra time to work out FA issues before committing, so schools may not have totally nailed down their numbers. But they’re close enough to give next year’s applicants an idea.

@corinthian, yeah maybe an overreaction, but it is simple math. Some Pitzer admissions officer had the great idea of rounding 27.8959% to 27.8%. And it’s obviously not the student newspaper’s mistake; it’s quoting the admissions officers directly. If they’re going to disclose the data, then state the number of applicants, the number of acceptances. It’s not that hard. Or don’t disclose at all.

Yes, notice that Scripps and CMC told the reporter they weren’t ready. CMC has actually become very very careful about releasing any statistics ever since the SAT reporting scandal a few years ago. I do think that it’s possible for a school to have some ED2 candidates that aren’t committed yet because of unresolved FA issues.
