So I applied to CU Boulder a while ago and have just now found out that they want my first semester senior grades before making a decision. I’m a pretty average student honestly, an overall 3.2 GPA weighted but have also taken lots of AP and honors classes. What does this mean, do I still have a chance of getting in? Right now, my grades are A(college credit course), A, B (college credit course), C(honors class) and B. I’m thinking they may want to just make sure I didn’t have another downward trend because first semester junior year I ended up with a 2.8 and then second semester brought it back up to 3.2. I’m just really stressed about this because boulder is my dream school and I just want to know what this means. Thanks.
Of course you still have a chance; if you didn’t they wouldn’t bother asking for grades. Now is this a good thing, you’re on the bubble and they’re looking for a reason to take you? Or a bad thing, you’re on the bubble and unless they see some continued improvement over last year they’ll say no? The people that know aren’t out here on the internet, they work in admissions, so anything else is just a guess.
Which brings up another point. If this is a school you really want to go to, then you ought to be working with your GC. Have the GC ask and see if there is any other info they’d like, and see what they’ll say about their concerns (if any).
Thanks for your reply. I actually did talk to my counselor today, as far as the questions I asked in this post he really couldn’t give me an answer because obviously he doesn’t know one way or another either. Basically he just told me to remind him to send in my grades when the time comes. He’s very hard to contact so figured I would come here w/some more questions I thought of. Do you think there’s anything I could do to strengthen their opinion of me? I’m trying to raise some of my grades with finals & the extra work left in the semester. However, I saw where some people sent emails to the office of admission just explaining anything they left out in their app or just trying to leave a better impression. Obviously this is my first time applying to college (although I am in everywhere else I applied) so I’m not sure if that seems too desperate or isn’t appreciated or what not. Thanks!
I’m pretty sure all schools get those. They must not have been sent by your school. Did you request they not be sent? I think it’s pretty routine. They knew your gpa and still requested them. I wouldn’t worry
@krh2234 That’s too bad. Like many kids your “counselor” prefers just being an administrative clerk that follows rules and sends out transcripts, stuff like that.
At prep schools and better publics, GC’s take a more active role. When a kid has a question, or receives a query from a college, they pick up the phone and call admissions. Colleges are often more forthcoming with a GC than they are with a student. A better HS GC has professional working relationships with colleges where many of their students apply, and are not intimidated by calling an admission officer at colleges where they don’t. This doesn’t seem to apply to your guy. And no point in asking him to call; he obviously doesn’t do this regularly and has no idea of what to do or say; it’s probably as likely he’ll make things work than help.
I know this is an old post but just wanted to come back for anybody that’s in the same situation and looking up information like I was. I ended up getting in after sending my grades, I also sent another letter of recommendation along with it and just received my acceptance a few days ago.
Good for you! This happened to my son at CO School of Mines. Our GC even sent in a letter of recommendation accompanying his first trimester senior year grades. But it didn’t help - he was rejected. He didn’t have a bad first trimester either so not sure what happened there!
