College Bedding

I got a letter from San Francisco State University today that is trying to sell me residence hall linens and informing me that regular bedding will not fit dorm beds because they are specially sized. I remember something similar a few years ago, back when I planned to attend the University of Montana. In fact, I think the company that the UM wanted me to buy from is the same one SFSU wants me to buy from. I never actually attended the UM, so I didn’t see the bedding, but it seems that this might be something standardized across a lot of universities. I ask here if anyone knows whether this is in fact true. If so, is there a cheaper source for this bedding than the supplier my university is recommending? Also, if anybody has tried to fit regular bedding on this sort of dorm bed, how bad was the fit? I’d like to know if I can get by without buying specialized bedding.

Dorm beds are usually Twin XL (39" x 80", as opposed to a twin, 39" x 75").

I once tried to fit a twin fitted sheet; it doesn’t stay well, so I suggest investing in a TXL sheet/comforter set.

You can also check places like Bed, Bath & Beyond; they can still be pricy, but you will likely find better quality sheet sets.

Thanks. I plugged Twin XL into Amazon, and it looks like they can get me set up at a good bit less than the university’s supplier.

Twin XL is a standard size (longer than twin). You will see many stores such as Bed Bath and Beyond, Target, and Walmart sell this size. Many times they will stock them in July/August just before school starts.

The qualiity of the Residence Hall Linens is very poor. Target and BBB are great places to get bedding and have Comforter/Sheet set combos that are reasonable in price and much better quality. Also invest in a memory foam topper, since most mattresses are very uncomfortable.

Kohls along with Big Lots sells Twin XL. Ross and Marshalls are a hit or miss depending on your area.

I would not suggest trying to get by. For $35 you can get yourself a set of fitted sheets, comforter, and a pillow case that will cover you up quite nicely.

^I second getting a mattress topper. I got a cheap one from Target for $10, but it feels much more comfortable.

eBay is a good place for many bedding needs. We used BB&B, Kohl’s, Marshall’s, TJmaxx and eBay for tons of college necessities.

Invest and get yourself a mattress cover, and a foam topper.

I was happy with the Twin XL fit from Residence Hall Linens. Saved some time.

The mattress topper is a solid suggestion.

Good luck!
