College students: How did your semester go?

I took DiffEq (honors), physics E&M, Spanish linguistics, orgo 1, and an engineering design course usually intended for freshmen. Orgo got more and more difficult as the semester went on, and I’m not really happy with my score on the final, but the curve just barely saved me. So my GPA survived.

What about everyone else? Glad to be home for the holidays or wishing you were back at school already?

Finished my first semester a couple weeks ago! I took all major courses this semester, so it was challenging, but I made the Dean’s List! Had some wonderful professors, some I’ve hung out with socially, some I’ve been invited to research opportunities with. I have a cool part-time job that relates to my field of study, and I’ve gotten involved with some fun clubs and organizations. Glad to finally be home, though! As much as I love my school and the friends I’ve made, I really love sleeping in my own bed and having no responsibilities for a few weeks.

Not so good in my opinion. I got a 3.75 so far, which is ok but it sucks when you have 6 A’s and 1 C (still waiting on last grade). I really wanted to at least maintain a 3.8 all throughout college to get summa cum laude. I’m just happy to be home for these next couple of weeks.

@elliebham Sounds like the ideal college experience! Congrats on dean’s list!

@agraves Aw :frowning: Still, a 3.75 is dang good, and you’re clearly capable of doing even better. Did you take an unusually large number of classes??

@bodangles I took 7 classes or 17 credits including an honors information systems course, honors english, honors seminar, a business orientation course, applied calculus, psychology, and business problem solving. I don’t think it’s that unusual to take that many credits. I just think I would do better taking fewer courses. I’m only a freshman though so I have time to raise it.

@agraves That’s how many credits I took this semester too, but mine only represented five classes. I would definitely feel like I was spread a little thin with seven!

I had 5 classes. Got some of my grades in. I did not pass Algebra I. I have to retake that. I did not get grades back from 2 courses.

Haha I wish I had that GPA @agraves! Be happy with it.

My semester was the first of many at Northeastern. Had some struggles w/ Calculus 3 (sorta self studied Calc 1/2) and forgot that the textbook was necessary for awhile during Chem. Ended up with a few Bs and a couple of A- marks as well. Overall, happy I survived first semester and glad I experienced how a lack of work can effect grades before classes got too tough.

I started out taking seven classes (22 hours), with five in math and two in computer science. I ended up withdrawing from the CS classes because I realized I was taking classes I don’t like in order to get a job I won’t like, and that seems kind of silly considering I’m going to die someday. So I was left with the math classes, where I got four As and one B. This has been my worst semester, but I think spring will be better because my classes are more interesting.

@Buttergreen Sucks about algebra 1 ): At least now you’ll be super prepared for the next time around… How do you think that one class with the weirdo professor went? Did his strange quirks make it hard to learn?

@BPearlman97 A good lesson to learn! Congrats on completing your first semester successfully.

@halcyonheather Yikes! That’s an absurd number of credits…here I am over here feeling stressed about 17. Were you a CS major/minor?

I wanted to double major in CS (although I didn’t actually declare it, which I guess is a blessing). One of the classes was required for the major and one was required for both the major and the minor. Since I don’t want to see either of them again, I don’t think I’m going to end up with either a major or a minor.

I took Calc III (Honors), General Chemistry, Engineering Graphics, and Public Speaking. Got As in all.

Congrats to those who met with success this past semester. @agraves , a 3.75 from 17 units is pretty incredible.

I took all major-related (Economics) courses as well: 3 classes and 1 online lab for 13 semester units total, but I am also working full-time. Ended up with all solid A’s and a 4.0! I admit I was a little skeptical about getting an A in one of the courses - I thought I did the math and reasoned with myself that I got either a B+ or an A-, but did better than I thought, I guess. Best part of this past semester: I registered for classes for the last time (Spring 2016 graduation coming)!

It’s weird, but nice, being at work and only having to focus on work. My mind isn’t constantly two or three places at once. It’s funny because this is my first real “break” in the last few years (I’ve taken summer and winter session classes the past few years) and I wanted to get some personal enjoyment reading done, but I don’t even know what to read now that I can select my own reading material! I just ordered a few books and figure I’ll decide when they come in.

… GPA is slightly above the borderline of 3.9! Actually it’s now below the borderline (knew I should’ve postponed that 2 unit class) before my last 3 grades come in which need to be A’s in the 4 unit classes and at least an A- on Senior project to graduate summa cum laude in the Spring!

Right now, I’m just cramming as many items from a college bucket list into a lovely remaining 5 months. So much to do and now it’s time to look for a last semester internship / future jobs.

Shoot, CC makes me feel super inadequate. Given my prior record of mediocre academic performance, I’m basically doing a jig about the fact that I got above a 3.5 GPA this semester with 6 classes.

On the extracurricular side, I killed it this semester. Organized an outdoors trip, got second place in a national competition, and led an important position in my sorority.

I’m very happy that I’m back at home for the holidays. It feels great to hike in a place where not only is there real elevation change, but also has fantastic weather. The great cities nearby and the beach certainly don’t lessen my excitement to be home.

Congrats on finishing your first semester, @albert69! And your penultimate semester, @turtlerock and @tangentline! As a sophomore I’m starting to hit that point where it’s like wow…I’m not even half done…sigh.

The curse of CC, @whenhen  Congrats on your accomplishments in and out of the classroom.

I’m a freshman Meteorology major who took Freshman Seminar, Meteo 201, Calculus I, Chem 110, and Psych 100. I ended up with a 3.1, which was far below my expectations. I was on track to get around a 3.4, but final exams killed me. I’m only taking four classes in the spring - Calculus II, Physics 211, English 015, and Econ 102 - so I’m hoping to improve my GPA substantially.

Outside of academics, it’s been fantastic. I’ve made a ton of new friends and joined several clubs, so I’m definitely putting myself out there. In the spring, I’ll be rushing a fraternity and getting a part time job on campus, Overall it was a busy semester and I’m glad I’m home for the next few weeks, but I’m also really looking forward to coming back.

Yooo fellow Stater. Don’t stress too much about physics – when I took it last spring (and when I took 212 this fall) they curved every exam so that the average was a 70%. The uncurved average was usually like ten percent below that, resulting in ten extra percent on each exam grade. (Or, once during this semester, thirty extra percent. Because screw electromagnetism.)

@bodangles: I’m not too concerned about Physics 211 because it’s just like my high school Physics class, but I’m definitely worried about 212 since it’s all new to me. I heard about the 43% average on one of the exams, and I always hear people complaining about how awful the department is here. Might have to invest in Lion Tutors for the first time.

Pretty well, managed to get all A’s.

Don’t know how, but I completely clutched finals. Scored WAY higher than I was expecting.
