So I'm interested in pursuing entertainment management as my major in college. I know some universities have specific music business schools, and some have majors like music industry studies. I'm wondering what universities are good to go to location-wise and alumni-wise for this type of major. I would like to stay on the East Coast and not go further south than Virginia, if that helps at all. Also, a school in a good area. Thank you!

That’s a super narrow major. I am not familiar with that major, but I know there are schools that seem to be feeders to the major talent and management agencies. You’d want to look for a school where there is a chance to make connections and the alumni network in the industry is strong so you can get in the door somewhere. Emerson, Wesleyan, NYU come to mind.

Beware the ‘for profit’ schools that offer this somewhat obscure degree. You don’t have to have such a specific degree to work in that industry.

When you say “entertainment management” do you mean managing individual performers (being an agent) or do you mean managing an arts facility?

A few ideas of places for you to look at (though they don’t all meet your location requirement) would be Belmont in Nashville, University of Miami, or American (in DC). They all offer some entertainment options. Where you look may depend on if you yourself are a musician. Some places do their music business through their schools of music which would require an audition (I believe Miami is like this). Others have this degree separated (such as Belmont - they have a music school AND a music business school. American’s is throught their Kogod School of Business). NYU was a good suggestion as well.

One thing to think about is location in terms of getting internships. That is a big plus for Nashville because it is a “music town.” The University of Southern California might be an option as well, but, again, it doesn’t meet your East Coast requirement.

Also, make sure you know what your parents are able to afford.

Good luck. Oh! And you might try posting this on the music majors forum. Or searching there. There have been lots of threads on this.

Definitely check out Belmont in Nashville! Doesn’t meet all of your personal requirements, but it’s a great school and is my #1! Good luck!

@Hoggirl, By entertainment management, I mean managing an individual performer/band. I am not a musician myself, so I couldn’t go anywhere that required an audition for that program. Thank you! I will look in that forum, I didn’t even know that existed since I just joined today.

NCISriss, I was actually thinking of Belmont because I visited Nashville last year (saw Vanderbilt then, too) and I loved it and I think I’d want to end up there for managing country singers rather than LA. My only problem was that it seemed very religious. I don’t know if you know anything about how religious it is, or if they have some religion requirements?

BrownParent, what exactly do you mean by “beware of the ‘for profit’ schools” and why?

BrownParent means schools such as Full Sail and those of similar ilk that are not regionally accredited. They are pricey, pushy, encourage debt, and have extremely high drop-out rates. Credits won’t transfer.

I believe that Belmont requires two religion courses. I can’t recall if there is anything else. Sory - been too long and seen too many school since then.

Hmm. Since you are not a musician that may limit some of your choices. However, Belmont’s School of Music Business would be ideal in that regard.

Okay great thank you! Yeah, I’m definitely not going to a school like Full Sail. I will try to look into the whole religion thing at Belmont and see if I can find anything on the website.
