Same here.

Are you guys going to have people watch you open your acceptance letters?
My aunt’s coming over to watch.

SAT: 2320
SAT II: 800 Math II, 610 US History (Eww)
GPA: 102 Weighted, School doesn’t do unweighted
Rank: #1 but school didn’t report that since they don’t technically announce it until graduation time
AP: Lang 5, World 4, APUSH 4
Senior Schedule: AB Calc, AP Gov, AP Lit, Graphic Arts, Gym

Subjective:
ECs: Math Club, Junior Class Secretary, NHS VP, Star Scholars Program
Service: About 1000 hours at soup kitchen, hundreds of hours of math tutoring, 100 hours at hospital
Employment: Work every day after school at old elementary school as paid tutor/mentor; worked during summer at hospita
Teacher Recs: English teacher’s is really good, math teacher’s is fine.
Conselor Rec: Not generic but not amazing either.
Essays: I wrote a very personal composition for the CA essay that could not have reflected me better. The Columbia ones were very genuine as well.
Interview: Went extremely well… I highlighted what distinguishes me as a student as how I used my challenges to shape me for the better…he explicitly said he hopes I get in and will give me a strong rec

Other:
State: NY
School: Public (one of the worst in the area; high crime rate in my city, very poor, etc.)
Ethnicity: Asian (technically I am Guyanese)
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: <$20,000
Hook: First Generation

Reflection
Pros: SAT, GPA, unique background
Cons: Not being a citizen, not having many opportunities in my area, and that blastid US History subject test score.

I have been very dedicated to community service and helping people in general – it’s my passion. I do think I conveyed that in my essay and interview and the situations in which I grew up are certainly not those of a typical Columbia applicant nor a typical American teenager. So that might help. But I’m preparing for a rejection. Hopefully the Adcoms will see that I literally have no time during the week for any other ECs, I have a full schedule

@misslanette
If you’re a borderline candidate, a really great interview report could be in your favor.

NOT PARTICULARLY! But if no one does in the next 24 hours, I probably will…I’m too curious!

@trirunner96 kid you’ve got hutzpah for posting first!

Looking at your stats is making me nervous for my own chances.
You guys are truly extraordinary.

@shankar334
so were you born in Guyana?

@ilovethecity Yeah I made sure to mention that in my essay because I doubt Columbia gets a lot of Guyanese applicants…it kinda sucks though because that means they take finances into consideration for admission…and I’m poor so…

Columbia is need blind for US citizens and permanent residents, and even those who have been granted refugee status that wont be a factor in you’re application. You are a very strong applicant!

@WhatGoesUp Yeah but I’m none of those… I’m a DACA student but I was illegal for most of my life. I wrote about that too…tried to turn it into something positive instead of wallowing in self-pity

I don’t want to only post stats so I’ll write about myself.

My SAT score/gpa are below average so my chances were never very good. I’m hoping that my recs, essays, interview, and overall theme of my app will help me. I changed my entire life in one summer. The summer of my freshman year, I lost 60 pounds (I was at high risk of developing diabetes) and committed myself to school (prior to sophomore year I was on track for state school If I was lucky).

I went from an 82 average (we do /100) to a 98, then a 99 junior year (my courses were like 3x harder junior year than freshman). I started 3 clubs over the years, made a few major accomplishments (won’t go into detail), fell in love with politics, interned for local politicians and ended up working with the Comptroller of NYC (the #2 person under the Mayor) (literally with, I actually came up with an idea that he put into action, again won’t go into detail).

I got a 2030 my first try on the SAT after over 7 months of studying (went up from a 1450 PSAT but that really doesn’t matter), studied for 4 more months, got consistent 2200+ scores, took the actual test with too much confidence, and only ended up going up 10 points to a 2040.

My essays were the best written works I’ve ever created. I literally put everything I had in my essays, so hopefully they will help.

My counselor rec should be pretty good because he likes me & wrote about how I was helping students with the college app process (in reality just telling people how to use common app over, and over, and over again lol)
–My teacher recs are probably pretty good.
—I also got a rec from one of the politicians I worked with who ran for state assembly. That one is amazing. He gave me a little peek.

Lastly, my interview could not have gone any better. She literally emailed me after the interview even before I had a chance to email her.

In all, I don’t think my chances are good at all, but what ever happens, happens. I’m sure this goes for everyone when I say we did our best and we did everything we could do, so relax, and take the acceptance/rejection with a grain of salt.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

@ds0501 you sound amazing!
i need to get off this site i’m getting scared now

I just want to point this out: you guys will succeed no matter where you are, just by your sheer passion and dedication. I would be truly honored to be the same class as you are. Hopefully, all of us can walk into Columbia campus and call it home next fall! Regardless of what happens, know that you will open your wings wherever you may be.

:))

LOL I wish, I’m not even being “humble” I will literally be surprised if I get in. @ilovethecity

Also, on another note did anyone get an email from Columbia approximately 2 hours ago? I just checked my mailbox.

I didn’t, what did it say?

Teacher Recs: Both should be strong
Conselor Rec: Should be really good

Columbia and engineering school essays reflect my personality and I am very happy with how they turned out.
Interview: Went extremely well… I found some common ground with my interviewer and we finished off a long discussion with him giving me tips about how to survive life at columbia

Other:
State: NC
School: Public - Biggest and most competitive school in the state
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 200,000
Hook: First gen immigrant, female majoring in civil engineering

Reflection
Pros: ACT, AP scores, courseload, essays
Cons: class rank, GPA (sort of)

I also have a few little (big) details about me that have had a huge effect on my life. I talked about those in my essays and they were included in my counselor rec, and they definitely help me stand out from your ‘average white girl’. I’m also hoping that the admissions people understand what High Performance is… it’s a big deal for the volleyball community.

That’s the weird part - this email doesn’t make sense. I got this at 8:02 PM (EST) today.

That’s very weird. Must be some glitch.
