Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Academic Decathlon (Team captain 10,11,12) [First time any school in our district has placed 1st at regionals and state, qualified for nationals and placed 6th in the nation, had lots of media coverage since our team really came out of nowhere. I’ve spent hundreds of hours studying for it]
Physics Club (Founder/President, 12)
Calculus Club (VP, 11,12)
Chemistry Club (11, President 12)
Job/Work Experience: Builds and fixes computers for friends and random people
Volunteer/Community service: Not much, I organized fundraisers to send our team to Nationals for AcDec and have organized an entire district scrimmage for our school
I also tutor math and physics

Summer Activities: Boys State (Mayor and Senator)
Essays: Hopefully should be unique. Going to talk about how I skateboarded for around 7 years and how it really shaped my personality and then how I really started to care about school around my sophomore year. Also going to talk a lot about how AcDec catalyzed that process. Why Columbia essay is about how I was pretty much doing the core curriculum already through AcDec, just with a smaller group of people. Then, for my why physics essay, I wrote about how inspired I was when I visited the CERN two summers ago
Teacher Recommendation: From AcDec coach who I have had as a teacher for 3 years, very very close, should be amazing
Counselor Rec: I go to a large public, so it should be pretty generic as I’ve only spoken to her a couple of times
Additional Rec: Calc teacher I’ve had for two years, we’re on a really personal level but I’m not sure how good of a writer she is.
Interview: None

State (if domestic applicant): AZ
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Middle class, large public (2400 kids)
Ethnicity: Hispanic/Mexican
Gender: M
Income Bracket: $120,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM

Pros: Scores, URM
Cons: Not much volunteer work, maybe a generic essay, GPA, school has never sent anyone to a top 10

Isn’t that the first email you would receive from them after submitting your Common App and Writing Supplement?

@evanian15‌ Can you check when you received that email?

@viphan‌ I got that email on Oct. 30th

@wilguen‌ I think it was a system glitch or something. I’m definitely not going to read into it haha

@viphan‌ I think it’s a glitch, because I received that email on November 3.

Also sorry if this is a dumb question but how do you guys know how good your teacher and counsellor recs are if you can’t read them?

@viphan we really don’t know, we’re just guessing based on our relationships with those teachers and counselors. For all I know, mine could be scathing, but I doubt that because I believe I have had strong relationships with these teachers and I think they like me

@doodlecat‌ Yep, that’s what it is. The ratings are based on the student’s subjective relationship with the recommenders. For example. if your GC selected you over others for a selective camp to represent your school (in my case) and the student stayed friendly with the GC, s/he can assume that the GC will write a decent or above LOR.

Mostly assumptions. For all we know they’re terrible lol.

@viphan‌ @wilguen‌ It was the same text that would show up on the application status page prior to the update. Oh well, it’s definitely a funny glitch

Actually my old English teacher showed me his and I saw my math teacher’s on my current English teacher’s desk for editing

i wonder what the portal screen looks like ;;;;;;;;;;;

You log in the same way, and the only thing that will be different is the status box on the upper right corner. It’ll say something like “Status Update”.

Following @ds0501‌ 's example, I will write about myself instead of posting stats.
Anyways, my average GPA and SAT scores are below average. I didn’t get an interview because I am an international student from Myanmar so… needless to say, there are no interviewer in my area. I have an average GPA of only 3.75 because in my freshman year I had a GPA of 3.6, in my sophomore year I had a GPA of 3.8 and in my junior year consistent 4.0. I ended up with a SAT score of 2040, after 2 sittings. My predicted scores for the IB is 43/45. I am a Burmese citizen.
I spent a lot of time on my essays, at least 15 drafts. I believe that my supplements are quite good, although that admissions officers will be the judge of that, they were my best written work.
Extracurriculars: I founded the group Humans of Yangon, the school magazine titled ROAR, the micro-finance organisation. I have volunteered as stage manager for school plays since sophomore year. I am a senior member of the SEEDS environmental club. I have been involved in MUN group since the 8th grade, attended 13 conferences and chaired 4. I play left wing defense in the varsity Touch Rugby team. I went to the OxBridge NYC Program 2 summers ago and interned at the Irrawaddy Magazine writing articles on things like art shows, illegal car smuggling etc etc last summer. I also intern at the TS1 Gallery as a gallery assistant, helping with the curations of Burmese artist exhibitions.
My recs are probably good seeing as I have a strong relationship with the counselor and the teachers I asked to write my recs.
In conclusion, I really don’t think my chances are very good but anyways, GOOD LUCCKKK to everybody.

@resayang19988‌ I think your chances are extremely good. The fact that your from Myanmar is really interesting, and colleges love diversity. I think you would be a wonderful addition to Columbia’s campus.
