I was wondering about those who have applied for the Spring 2007 semester got accepted into the School of General Studies or were denied admission. I'm still waiting to hear if I was accepted or not. So post your updates to let us know what's going on.

As I said in a previous post, I applied 9 weeks ago and still haven't heard a thing.

I'm going to call again on Monday.

Anyone else heard anything?

From what I've been told, members of the committee have been really busy with college visits (not to mention the holidays). I called this past Thursday and was told they will start making/mailing decisions next week for sure.

It's just a waiting game now.

I've been popping in and out of college confidential for a little while... I applied and sent in my entire package to GS right before the October 15th deadline. Like a lot of you, I've been sitting here without any news, chewing my fingernails (a habit which has resurfaced after seven years!).

So I was all prepped, thinking that by the end of this week, I would receive word on my status... of course, what happens but I get a call from the admissions office today and they request an interview.

Apparently, they still had questions for me. So, of course, being a Manhattanite, I hopped on the subway and made my way to Columbia. I just got back after a half-an-hour session with one of the managers of Admissions. He tells me that after going back to the committee, they'll let me know "some time in the next week."

Good? Bad? Have I any basis for rendering a value judgement on these recent developments in my admissions bid? Nein.

So I urge those of you who, like me, still haven't heard. Just chill. If we get in, booyah! If we don't, fine, we'll just take the less traveled path to personal fulfillment.

Peace.

I just called them a minute ago and they told that they are going to send out the notices on December 15th. So I assume that they made it before the 15th or they are going to mail it out the latest monday 18th. I have no clue why its taking so long from them, but keeping my fingers cross that I will get in. Hopefully the college I am in right now does not screw up put my stufff in wrong mailbox.

Is admissions no longer rolling? When I applied, I heard back about 10 days later with an offer. But I'm also awesome so it might be different for the rest of you. I don't know.

It is rolling only after a certain date. Stop being so modest. ;)

Really? That sounds different from when I went through the process. Maybe they're trying to become more competitive. Wouldn't be a bad thing, of course.

Yeah I was told they won't start looking at Fall applications until Feb.

Hrmm. I applied around 10/1 and heard back on 10/16 (via FedEx). How do I remember 10/16? Well, let's just say that my hometown baseball team wouldn't lose another game all season after that day. Karma?

I wish I could find out sooner. Oh well...all in good time.

Either way, best of luck.

sdmazarin,

It's funny. I started chewing my fingernails again too.

Such a nasty habit. Maybe I should take up smoking instead. =-)

Caladan got a response last week. How come none of the rest of us have?

I do believe that the Spring 2007 semester will be the most competitive ever. It seems to me that there are more applicants who have applied for this semester than expected. But I'm only guessing.

I had completed my application documents this past summer. However, I wasn't able to get my teachers recomendation letters out of the way because they were on leave during the summer period. So, my application wasn't completed until late November.

Now the long wait. I wish that they would contact me to know whether or not I was admitted to the GS program. But I still have a nagging feeling that I'll be rejected due the exceptionally strong applicant pool and a very strong student retention rate this time around. I seem to have a talent for applying at the most difficult times.

john9215: yes... the resurgence of minor neuroses we thought we'd licked. But the cigarettes... I've quit recently and that's not a habit I'm going to pick up again (if I have anything to do with it!).

I'll share some thoughts on the interview... it seemed they were not just keen on academic ability or the desire to 'be a part of Columbia University.' It seems they're truly interested in building a strong GS presence, a solidarity, to counter some of the hurdles that GS students face, such as less financial aid and assertions by maligners (from both within and without the CU society) that GS is a backdoor entrance to a top-rate program or that its students are lesser-than.

Two times the admissions manager asked me about how I felt (as a 22 year-old, basically of the CC age-group) about having, as my classmates, people who would typicaly be 5, 10, or even 20 or more years older than myself. I loved the idea, since my time on Wall Street and in ex-college situations has proven to me that restricting oneself to any single demographic, no matter how nice, is a good way to become insulated and provincial. And when I say demographic, I mean any sort of 'categorizable' group, like 'race/ethnicity', 'age group,' 'gender or sexuality-based,' 'philosophical/political', 'economic,' et cetera.

I don't know all of your backgrounds... my ability to score high on tests and do well academically they have no issues with... what they were most curious about was why I dropped out of Amherst twice... I wanted to tell them that I was going to be their next R.W. Apple, but that might have been perceived as arrogant, so I refrained. ; )

<insert sigh=""> .... Caladan and I have talked a bit... I think the fact that Caladan, or windowshopper (whatever that dude's name was), or whoever, got their admissions decisions quicker than others, and people like redline, john9215 and I are still floating in the ether, only serves to underscore the fact that GS is attracting not only a large enough number of applicants to warrant a delay in processing all the admissions decisions, but also that the kind of students and their life stories are extremely variegated. Some cases are more simple than others, or perhaps they just happened to get to certain people quicker than others (a straightforward case demonstrating the fact that when one has a lot of things to do, some things will be dealt with sooner and others later).</insert>

I hope all of the people on this forum get in and we can all chill during orientation... I think the very fact that we're agitating for weeks and in many cases months over our admissions and putting our thoughts out on a public forum, trying to comfort and be comforted, is proof-positive that we really want this and that, should we be accepted, we'll make excellent Columbia students.

Hang in there, compadres!

Good luck to all of you!
And for those of you who go to GS, remember it when you are older and can contribute alumni $$s. The stronger the alumni support becomes, the stronger GS will become within the university.

Wow!

Thanks Coach Carter. That was inspiring! ;-)

Caladan, Windowshopper, Sdmazarin, Redlinekid, and myself shall all celebrate with drinks somewhere near campus if the rest of us become accepted. =-)

If we're not accepted we shall drink in our respective homes. =-(

I'd write more on this thread but we're off to the "GS Update" thread... I agree with John9215's proposal... let's get together and initiate a headstart on building community... we will be the college confidential GS'ers.
