Columbia School of General Studies Fall 2006

Who got in? I have not heard from Columbia yet, but would like to know what the stats are of those who did get accepted for the Fall of '06.

Thanks!

Just out of curiosity, when was your application complete? I, too, am awaiting a decision. Fun, huh?

I submitted my application on the 1st of May. The only thing missing was the GSAE and I flew to NY to take it on the 15th of June. I just received an e-mail from Ruth Levenkron, from GS, and she told me about 4 weeks for a decision.

When was your application complete?

Mine was complete on June 16. I submitted my application in March and took the GSAE in April. I would have probably heard the decision by now, but something weird happened to the transcript containing my spring '06 grades (I've heard three different versions ranging from "it got lost in the mail" to "we didn't send it") and my old school just faxed it last week despite the fact that I requested to have it sent in May.

I guess I'll have another four weeks to wait, too. Sigh. So stressful!

It is! All we can do is wait though. Are you planning on applying for housing? Do you know or have you heard from anybody if it's hard to get housing from Columbia if you are in GS?

How about financial aid? Are you just planning on taking out loans? I've heard that not very many people get aid.

Nonetheless, good luck with your application! Let's keep each other posted.

Good luck to you, too!

I'm actually planning to commute from NJ. I doubt it will be much fun, but I don't really have any other choice. I have a friend who has had an impossible time getting housing (but she's in grad school) and is currently sharing a one bedroom apartment near NYU with three other women. She knows a couple of people in GS who have had fairly good luck with housing, though.

I'm not sure what's going to happen with financial aid. I just received something in the mail from my state saying that they will give me no financial help because GS is not on their list of "approved institutions." I'm still hoping for some sort of national aid and maybe a scholarship. Did you fill out GS's scholarship application? I'm hoping to get something from that. Anything will help.

I received a phone call from the admissions office on my answering machine. They didn't leave me a contact message. So I assume that either they want to interview me or to tell me that I wasn't suppose to send my sealed H.S. transcripts along with my application. The hard part is asking my professors to write me a letter of recommendation.

Once that's out of the way, I'll take the GSAE.

dot_parker: Yes, I filled out the scholarship/financial aid application for GS and wrote yet another essay for it. I hope everything turns out well. I'm not expecting a lot of financial aid from GS, but like what you said, anything would help. Let me know when you receive your decision for admission. I'm guessing we'll get it the first week of July.

redline: Why would it be hard to ask your professors for the letters of recommendation? My advice, get everything out of the way: take the GSAE, get those recommendations, fill out the financial aid application, so you're not stressing to get everything done in the last minute. I know I procrastinated. I had to fly all the way to NYC to take the GSAE because I missed all the deadlines for registration for the SAT and ACT. Could've saved me a lot of money.

But I think everything will work itself out. Just really anxious to find out GS's decision...am I in or not? :) Hopefully I get in!

...still checking the mail box everyday... not including sundays. :)

Most of my favorite professors are on vacation from the summer. I have to use altenative teachers for a recomendation.

I completed my application on May 31st and sent everything via express mail, but, I still haven't heard anything. I'm starting to have doubts about getting into Columbia GS.

By the way, what is the deal with the application tracking part on the GS website?

The application tracking on the GS website is just designed for you to track what has been received by GS. It's useful in that fashion, but that's about it. They update it pretty regularly though. However, if all your credentials are received, there's really no use to log into it all of the time. :)

Good luck with everything. Let us know what happens.

Tarius1210,
What are you academic stats? It would definately help for us to know, so that we could guess whether you'll get in or not. As for me, I'm going with the flow for now. I am not sure whether I'll get in or not. I just keeping the faith!

How about we all post our stats... I'll start first...

29 Year old Filipino Male
Graduated 1995 from Seaside High School.

GPA: 3.97 (UW) High School
Enrolled at Purdue University (West Lafayette) but withdrew due to financial issues.
Rank: 10/450

EC's during high school are pretty much the same as everyone else who applies to college. Made it a point to do as much community service while in high school.

AP courses taken:

Calculus AB - 4
Physics - 5
American History - 4
Computer Science - 4
French -5
English - 5
Micro and Macro Economics - 4

Took the most rigorous classes in High School.

If I get in, I will be a first year, since I withdrew from Purdue.

Work Experience:

Starbucks Coffee Company (1997 - 2001)
Assistant Store Manager

Hog's Breath Inn ( 2001 - 2004)
Assistant Restaurant Manager/Bar Manager

Carmel Valley Ranch Resort ( 2004 - Present)
Food and Beverange Director

I think I did very well on the GSAE. Did not submit my SAT results since it has been more than 8 years since I took it last.

Essay was written well ( I think ) :).

Be kind with my stats. I know it's not the best, but it's a secon chance for me if I get into Columbia GS.

Post your stats and share. Good Luck to everyone!!!

Redlinekid, I know you mentioned that the profs you want to write recommendations for you are on vacation, but I’d still e-mail them to see if they’d do it. One of my favorite professors was on sabbatical, but I e-mailed her and not only was she happy to do it, but she sent the rec to my house.

James, you have great stats. Good luck!

My stats:

23 year old white female
Homeschooled: finished school work in 2000, but didn’t take the GED until 2004 (I got an 86%) because I spent the years in between caring for my grandmother.

I began attending a CC last January- one of the best in the country.
Graduated after only three full semesters w/ a 3.7 GPA. It would be higher if not for a snafu involving a completely online science class. Did I mention it was an accelerated summer class?

Phi Theta Kappa, Dean’s List, National Dean’s List, magna cum laude.
64 credits, though I have no clue how many will actually transfer.
I took 22 credits this past spring and got a 3.864 GPA.

Involved in the student newspaper- won a journalism award.
Student aide.

I don’t really have any other ECs from my school, but I am involved in a book club in my neighborhood, take cooking classes, and do yoga and Pilates.
I also bottle raised three orphaned kittens during my first semester at college. I got a 3.8 GPA that semester. My vet told me he's never seen anybody successfully raise two, let alone three kittens.

Excellent recommendations and a fantastic essay.
I think I got a perfect score on the GSAE. There was only one question that bothered me and I had to go back to.

Well, I just found out this morning that Columbia didn't recieve my college transcript yet. It seems that my school sent it to Columbia College instead of GS. I am so disappointed that I have to wait another 4 - 6 weeks to find out if I got in or not.

Got my rejection letter today. This will be my last post. Good luck to all who are still awaiting decisions!

Wheee. Thread resurrection is awesome.

Application processed 6/3
GSAE taken 6/10
Interviewed 7/13
Accepted 7/14

Yes, the six week long wait was hell. :)

(And, if anyone needs statistics, 27 year old male, North NJ, ex-IT consultant. Nothing else of importance to mention.)

Congrats to all who got accepted, and luck to anyone else who might still be waiting.

Congratulations!

I wish I only had a six week wait:

Application processed: 3/31
GSAE taken: 4/7
Application finally complete (transcript): 6/16
Accepted: 6/27

Apparently someone at the school I am transferring from sent my transcript to the wrong place. Columbia didn't get it until a month after I requested it be sent and the school eventually had to fax it despite the fact that they "generally don't do that" b/c they could tell I was extremely unhappy with what they did. But it was all worth it when I got my acceptance package.

Thanks very much!

Yes, I had something similiar happen -- I filled out my transcript requests and so forth, but my most recent school decided to not send any information regarding my last semester there. Ah, the machinations of academic bureaucracy. Anyhow, Admissions only informed me about it during my interview; I suppose that it wasn't such a big deal, as they did accept me the following day, sans up-to-date transcripts.

Driving to the FedEx facility on Saturday to get my documentation was a pure delight, though, despite the wait and other miscellanea.

Are you applying/eligible for financial aid? I'm curious as to how much they might offer. (My EFC is very low, which may help, I suppose. All of the requisite forms are going in the mail tomorrow morning, so now I get to wait around for more decisions...)

Congratulations to all accepted.
