Commerce School Foreign Lang. Req

Quick question - can one be exempt from McIntire's foreign language prerequisite through SAT II scores?

Quick answer - Yes.

Check out the “placement” webpage for the language department you are taking.

The Comm School says they accept the same APs as the College. I’m guessing they accept the same language placement/exemption as the College. They do say the language requirement must be met before you start Comm School.

You can place out with a high enough score on the SAT II, AP, or UVA language department placement exams.

Thanks, guys. Somehow UVA exempted me from foreign lang. for the Chinese SAT II… and Chinese is my native language (even though I’m not good at it lol).

Not as quick of a question - if we plan on taking Spanish, how in the world do they think we’ll be able to finish 2020 by the time we apply for McIntire. Every span1010 course is filled with a 10+ person waitlist…

I’ve heard great things about UVa’s Summer Language Institute:

[Summer Language Institute, U.Va.](<a href=“Summer Language Institute (SLI) 2024 | Summer Session”>Summer Language Institute (SLI) 2024 | Summer Session)

UVa: that is unfortunate. If other options don’t work out (such as taking a class during the summer or a concentrated class during a winter break), maybe you could look at taking a distance learning class while in UVa. Of course, you would need to make sure the class transfers. Maybe you could take a distance learning class from a public university in your home state to save cash. Another option is to take a class from Piedmont Va. Community College in Cville, which is probably served by public buses.

What would be a “safe” or “decent” waitlist number ( right now) for SPAN1010 where you might actually have a decent chance of getting in?

Guys – do NOT plan on getting into SPAN 1010 this semester. The classes were filled with second year students long before first-years signed up, and most had waitlists before summer orientations began. Bottom line – you can not start Spanish at UVa as a first-year, except in the most extraordinary circumstances. AND, unless something changes this year, SPAN 1010 is not offered second semester. Your next chance to take SPAN 1010 will be Fall 2012.

I know that is harsh, but that is the way it is. My son has been through it.

Options: look at another language, even American sign language counts for your language requirement. The Summer Language Institute next summer, which blueiguana mentioned, above. IF you took Latin or another Romance language in HS, you can petition to start with SPAN 1060, advanced beginner. That course will be offered in the Spring and will shave a semester off your requirement. It is worth noting that a student who has taken even one year of Spanish is required to start at the 1060 level or above. That class will move more quickly, but I understand it starts very basically – colors, numbers, etc.

As I understand it, what is NOT an option is to take courses to meet your foreign language requirement at another school. Since foreign language is a “core competency,” the classes to meet the requirement must be taken at UVa, unless you fulfilled the requirement before starting at UVa.

That strikes me as very wrong if UVa does not allow an option of taking a language class at another college if a student is not able to take it at UVa.

Caveat, the comment above about taking courses to meet the foreign language requirement elsewhere is based on CLAS requirements. McIntire may be more flexible on that.

There also SHOULD be a self-study option, when a student cannot register for a class. That would allow a student to study on their own and then take a placement test (after they are a UVa student) to let them enter at a higher level language class.

This strikes me as a classic Catch 22 - you can’t be insane if you want to no longer fly combat missions.

I’d try to contact someone in the Spanish Department administration and see if they have any suggestions.

If you need to do the Summer Language Institute, for your second year, you might consider seeking a private apartment with a lease that corresponds to those months.

^ In this instance I’m willing to bet there are sublets available from students that have moved off grounds, are on full year leases, however won’t be here for the summer.

Thanks for your honestly and personal experience. However, I have 0% interest in learning anything else but Spanish. I am willing to compromise and take Latin but I would rather not.

I asked the question because I am 5/15 on the wait list.

My summers are not open because of internships.

I do think they should allow you to self study and then take a placement test at the end of every semester. Or allow a Grad or TA teach a section of SPAN1010 , I mean it cannot be that hard to teach an intro course.

FWIW, see this language from McIntire webpage on pre-req’s:

“After admission, foreign language prerequisites may, with prior approval, be completed by transfer during the summer prior to enrollment, but must be completed before entering the School.”

Could be clearer, but seems to say one may be admitted to McIntire before FL requirement has been met. And in that case, one may complete FL requirement through coursework at another institution, so long as it is completed during the summer before beginning McIntire coursework in Fall of third year. However, this option must be approved in advance.
