Any information on when the results of the Community Service Scholarships might be communicated? DD is signed up for an early Destination Tulane visit, and we’re hoping to have the results in advance of the visit. It’s likely to make or break our enrollment. Fingers crossed!
And beyond that - you know how the results come, email or letter?
Traditionally this is one of the later scholarships to be announced, maybe the latest. March 15-20 is pretty typical in the past. No idea about the mechanism of notification for this one, but I suspect not by email if the other scholarship notifications are any indication.
Thanks fallenchemist - while not what I’d hoped, that’s really helpful to know.
Many, many thanks for all your posts to this thread - you’re very helpful to prospective students and families, and only enhance the feeling of Tulane being a welcoming and friendly place. You’re much appreciated!
@allenchemist: Saw our Gibson portal recently updated to show the merit scholarship offer we received when accepted, plus an additional smaller, “Tulane Scholarship” which says is determined by need and then percentage by merit. Do you know how they compute that scholarship? And does it means my child is not still in running for Community Service Scholarship, if you know? Thanks.
I am afraid I will be zero help on this one, other than to say it does sound like they have calculated your need-based FA package and part of it is a grant, which is nice. But I really don’t know the fine points of how they calculate your FA package, other than of course it is based on the information provided in the FAFSA and the CSS form (I wish that financial form and the Community Service Scholarship didn’t have the same initials!). They use those to calculate your Expected Financial Contribution (EFC), which includes whatever merit money you already got.
So if you got a $20,000 scholarship and they figure you should be able to afford $10,000 a year out of income and assets, your EFC is $30,000. That leaves about $35,000 in need-based aid, and while Tulane doesn’t promise to meet 100% of that $35,000 they usually come pretty close through some combination of grants (which you apparently got), loans and work-study. But given the same numbers, every school seems to come up with a different EFC, and a different need-based package. Some schools like Harvard and Vanderbilt promise to meet 100% of need with no loans involved, but only the very richest schools can afford that. And even then that doesn’t mean people attending don’t have loans, because sometimes what they calculate for an EFC is higher that what the family actually has for cash flow to pay for college.
Anyway, just focusing on Tulane, I don’t know how they calculate your EFC and thus how much need-based aid to give you, and I don’t know how they come up with the figure of how much to make a grant and how much to leave to loans. I have observed that the stronger the student is academically, the better the grant part of the package. Or at least it seems so. It even has been reported that the better the student does at Tulane, the better the grant portion is the second year and beyond, assuming the family’s financial situation is unchanged otherwise.
I also don’t know if the CS Scholarships have been announced yet. Hopefully we will hear when they are. If they have not, and if you were to still get one, then your FA package would certainly change. Your CS Scholarship would be added to the merit scholarship up to the full amount of tuition plus fees. The rest of the FA package to pay for the full cost of attending would then depend on your EFC.
@fallenchemist Do you know how many Community Service scholarships are awarded each year? I previously thought that 15 were given out every year but I found somewhere else on the Tulane website that said 30 were awarded each year. It could be outdated information though! Thanks so much, and sorry if you already answered this somewhere else.
I am nearly certain it is now 15. Until a year ago the award varied from $5,000-15,000. Now they have decided to make it a higher, uniform amount of $20,000 and reduce the number given. So this is a recent change, making the confusion easy to occur.
Well, there are only 15 winners I think. So it could just be a matter that other winners are not CC or Facebook active, at least with regards to Tulane for the latter. Also some people are more reluctant to share this on public forums. For example, I have traded several private messages with Presidential and DHS recipients that feel like posting their success hurts the feelings of those that were not as fortunate. I don’t have that reservation, but clearly some others do. But again, this could just be a matter of small numbers. I don’t know how many DHS and PTA winners posted on Facebook, but obviously only a small fraction posted here, even including those that contacted me via PM. And there were 125 of those winners in total, 8 times as many as for the CSS.
Yikes! I truly did not mean to hurt anyone’s feelings…I hope that’s not the case. I was just very excited, as you might imagine and was wondering if other recipients might also respond.
You absoltely did not hurt my feelings!!! And you should be very proud of accomplishments and announce them to the world! I am just a little frustratrated for no notification for non winners and was so glad you posted so that at least I have some indication one way or the other. Best of luck to you in whatever college you choose!!!
