What portion of SB does it on a daily basis?
Where do they commute from?

We're about 40% commuter right now; most folks are local -- from Suffolk County -- but we do have a decent number of students who take the LIRR out from NYC (there's a station right on campus). Hope this helps!

40% seems like a lot of commuters...almost HALF! No wonder everyone says the campus empties out every weekend!

(sigh)

We house over 9,000 students on campus... and according to a study we did last year, on a typical weekend during the 05-06 school year, 70-75% of our residential students stayed on campus. So on any given weekend, you're talking about anywhere from 6300-7000 students on campus. I hate to say it, but that's far from empty. A lot less than the 40,000 people walking around campus (when you include faculty and staff) on a random Tuesday afternoon, but we're still pretty busy on weekends.

The sigh was because the "empties out" thing is something we've been fighting for a long time -- and it's why we did that study, which showed us a very different picture than what might have happened years ago.

I hate to hijack this thread but since the topic of commuting has been raised, does anyone know how long it would take to get to Stony Brook from the Forest Hills, Queens stop on the LIRR?

Forest Hills > Jamaica LIRR Station = 7 minutes
Jamaica > Stony Brook = 1 hour 15 minutes.

Actual total time from FH>SB may be longer depending on actual day/time of travel since you need to xfer at Jamaica and wait for the train that goes to SB.

What major are you considering?

From www.mta.info, I'm figuring about an hour and a half.
