Computer-Based Honors Program

Does anyone know anything about the Computer-Based Honors Program?

not much other than its uber difficult to get into..I applied for it, but I can't tell you anything you won't find at its website. Have you been there yet?

yeah, i've been there quite a few times. i applied for it too. i just talked to the director of the program before christmas. i was just wondering if someone knew something besides just what they had on their site. thanks for your response though...

peck- are you gonna be at academic achievement weekend?

I'm going to Capstone Scholar's Day, but won't be able to make it to AAW.

Do you know anyone who's ever been admitted to the CBHP? I don't know any, but I would like to know the stats of someone who has been, just to see if I stand any chance at all.

What's your major?

I'm majoring in Management...I sent you a PM.

My daughter got an invitation to Capstone Scholars last fall just a few days before it was scheduled, but we haven't gotten anything from them for this spring's CS day or for Academic Achievement weekend.

We seem to get duplicates for "visit our school" and "considering applying" even though she has already been admitted -- to the school, to IHP and UHP. She is very seriously considering U of Alabama, but no one seems to be able to shed much light on how and when scholarships are allocated there, especially since they have ended the tier program.

3.5 gpa, 32 ACT, 1420 SAT, AP scholar, lots of long-term civic/charitable work, president of largest club at her school, but not much in the way of sports or other school-related activities. We continually hear that "she'll get lots of money" but so far no actual offer.............anyone have any insider track of how and when scholarships are awarded?

Bamamom- I've been to campus several times and talked to people about these very issues. I already got my invitation for Capstone Scholars Day and AAW before Christmas break. Although there has been some confusion, the Tier I scholarship do still exist, only with a changed name (and steeper requirements) in the form of the Academic Elite Scholarships (from what the admissions office has told me). Your daughter looks like she has a great resume and I'm sure Alabama will be trying to recruit her! Feel free to PM me if you have any additional questions about 'Bama.

wdlan88, I just replied to your PM

Bamamom, congrats on your daughter's accomplishments. When did she get her acceptance letter? When I was admitted (August) I recieved notification of a full-tuition scholarship about 3 weeks later. About two weeks after that I got $10K from the particular college there I'll be enrolling in. They then waited another couple of weeks before sending me my alumni award. I have the same ACT score as your daughter. My GPA is somewhat higher, but I have far less activities.

My point is, if she just recently got her acceptance letter then I would wait a few more weeks. If not, then you could always call the scholarship office. Every time I've delt with UA on the phone, they've been more than willing to help.

Good Luck!

Apparently Bama's "automatic" scholarships are for 3.7 gpa's. She knows someone at her school who has a 3.7 but scored lower on the ACT (28 maybe?) and SAT and has already gotten a scholarship award. I think that she is feeling a bit unwanted or unappreciated or whatever since her other choice (used to be her 2nd choice) school has sent very personalized letters from students and staff, and two very nice scholarships, with another one in the works.

Peck, now I am REALLY confused. She was admitted last August. I did not think that any scholarships except the automatic ones were distributed prior to the December ap deadline, and that the alumni committee had not even met yet to decide on scholarships? Or are you talking about an earlier year?

I think peck is referring to the Alumni Honors and Alumni Heritage Scholarships. These are awarded to UA legacy applicants (i.e. parent, grandparent, or other relative attended UA) and are mailed almost immediately after acceptance letters.

Bamamom, I got my letter in August 2005 for admission for the fall 2006 semester. I'll finish up my senior year in high school in May 2006. Since I already recieved my scholarship from the college of engineering, I assumed that the other colleges within UA had already started mailing out their awards as well.

Hmm...maybe it is only the College of Engineering, I applied to Commerce and Business and was told that scholarships wouldn't be awarded until March.

I'm pretty excited...I just got an email informing me of my acceptance to the Computer-Based Honors Program. :)

Congrats! That's a great program and one of the most unique forms of learning technological skills. It really sets Alabama apart from many other colleges in that sense.

congrats wdlan, that's awesome!

peck, did you get in? or do you know anyone who did?

nope :( and I don't know anyone else that applied

What are the "hooks" needed to get accepted in Comp Based Honors program?

Aren't the new dorms great?!

The new dorms are amazing. I'm in Riverside this year (which is now a year old). Alabama is incredible, a diamond in the rough (if you will), it has really blown me away what this University has to offer. I was actually having second thoughts about it before I actually got here, but now I am really glad I came here.

Feel free to ask me any questions about the Honors Program, Computer-Based Honors Program, Scholarships, or just the University in-general.

From first hand experience with the Computer-Based Honors process and several conversations with the Dean, I will post CBH hooks later...now it's off to homework after my first day of classes.

Roll Tide!

Except Riverside has all the charm of a North Korean hotel. But I guess residence halls of single and double rooms sharing a community bathroom are becoming a thing of the past. Sorta like typewriters.
