Cornell Fall 2017 Transfer

If anyone here ( @Mastodon97 and any others) is interested in pursuing investment banking/sales and trading/asset management after graduating, I’d love to learn more about why you guys are interested in this career, why you think Cornell would put you in a better position to do so than you’re previous institution (assuming you don’t go to a CC) and what clubs/activities/courses/internships you guys hope to pursue at Cornell.

Hi guys,
I have a bit of an issue. I’m a Computer Science major currently and am attempting to transfer to CALS for information science. I feel like I’m about to die… So last semester I had all As for the most part… but this semester is different… my midterms grades were mostly As and one B… but now I’m worried because… I have a D in my computer science 2 class (our professor is ridiculously hard) and I’m scared I may not get it up to a C- by the end of the year. Everything else is alright, but that class, in particular, is killing me…
I’m scared that if I am accepted, that they will rescind my decision.
What do you guys think? :’(

@ILRTransfer3 Maybe I can help with this one. I just attended a 3 day Goldman Sachs summit so I’m in a decent position to get an internship. I am looking at three divisions within Goldman which are Legal, IM, and IB. All are client facing and will put me in a position in life to do pretty much anything I want both professionally and fiscally. I currently go to Syracuse which isn’t a target school but has a large enough alumni network to allow me to network. Cornell will just put me in a better position after graduation regardless of what I am trying to do and whether or not I get the internships. In terms of what I plan to do at Cornell, I don’t know specifics yet but I plan on utilizing every resource available to me because at Syracuse there aren’t as many as I would like. Cornell is just a better fit for me with peers that are similar insofar that they are academically driven whereas the student body at Syracuse is iffy.

@jewishkidaz I completely disagree.

Wouldn’t Cornell subject you to unfair competition?

I’m going to ILR, and I want to go to Medical School. That’s why I’m going to Cornell, because of the med school.

If I was going to go into finance (my brother works at Mckinsey, graduated from Northwestern), I would go somewhere non-Ivy, because the Ivies are gravitated towards wall st, and Cornell will always be seen as the “inferior”, in retrospect to Wharton, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, ETCC

@jewishkidaz Legal, IM and IB could lead to drastically different career paths unless you see them all as a quick way to make some money before law school. Congratulations on being selected for the summit - are you entering Cornell as a junior or sophomore? If Soph, it’ll still be tough if not impossible to do IM (assuming you mean more AM and not PWM) and IB at GS unless you’re diversity or Lloyd is your dad. Even GS S&T doesn’t take non-diversity sophomores (while a lot of other BBs do). GS Legal as Soph would probably be the most realistic option.

You also mentioned that the student body at Syracuse is iffy. At the end of the day, you’re not going to be friends with the entire student body. You could choose to surround with yourself with driven people that have similar career interests (such as the students in your investment club). While Cornell will likely have more driven people interest in IB, you also aren’t going to be friends with everyone in Cornell. How does essentially being around more competition for the same jobs make Cornell a better fit for you?

@verizonwireless why ILR if med school? Why not major in something STEM instead?

@ILRTransfer3 I’m taking all my classes for my science GPA at CCNY.

I intend to internally transfer to BIOSCI at CALS.

I just got the GT for ILR, so I feel like I had to pursuit it.

HUGE MISTAKE

@verizonwireless I thought you couldn’t transfer to another school internally if you’re an external transfer to begin with. Wouldn’t that make it easy to back door into whatever Cornell school you want through ILR?

Edit: Here it is on their website:

“Students who transferred to Cornell from another institution face certain restrictions. Generally speaking, students who transferred to Cornell after sophomore year are no longer eligible to apply for internal transfer.”

So I guess you can if you transfer in as soph? Not too sure what these “certain restrictions” refer to.

after sophomore year @ILRTransfer3, I’m an incoming sophomore.

And yeah, I’m sure they do face certain restriction, but it’s super easy to do, just maintain a high GPA.

@verizonwireless I completely understand what you’re saying and frankly, I agree with you. I am going to have to stand out a lot more and try a lot harder than I had to here (I am a diversity applicant, LGBT). I just generally thrive in environments where I am challenged and I am not challenged here in the slightest barring Calc 2. I believe being at Cornell will force me to work at my maximum capacity and would therefore make me a more attractive applicant than I currently am. I have also never been a fan of the adage “big fish in a small pond.” I’d rather develop my potential than make myself look good comparatively.

@ILRTransfer3 I am a first year sophomore at Cuse because of credits so I am applying for junior year internships at Goldman. If I transfer, assuming I get in, then I will likely not be able to graduate early meaning I will be considered a sophomore again next year. Also, sure there are smart and dedicated people here at Cuse, but that isn’t indicative of the entire student body. I want it to be indicative of the entire student body and I think Cornell can fulfill that desire. It just forces me to adjust the standard I hold myself to.

I hope this clarified some of the confusion.

@doctork Getting a D for one of the important (I assume, since you major in CS) courses is certainly dangerous. If I were you, I would pay extra effort and talk to my prof to ensure a pass; maybe try to tell him/her that the grade is crucial and all you need is a C- plus you are willing to do extra work for that. Not saying C- is much more acceptable, tho. I applied for CS as well, btw.

@EdwardL while getting a D is definitely bad, I’m applying for Information Science at CALS, not CS… but still… it irks me…
I got an A+ in an introductory programming course (computer Science I)…
This current course which I have a D in is called Computer Science II, and I think it’s the equivalent of Object Oriented Programming and Data Structures at Cornell…
it’s not necessarily required for info sci (I don’t think), but it is if you want to choose certain tracks in Info Sci… although Cornell wouldn’t yet know I have a D because my Midterm report showed an A for this course.

Are we going to get our pins at 12 tonight or tomorrow?

Hopefully midnight. I can’t hold it any longer lol

I might be wrong but isn’t this a rejection-heavy week? I was scrolling through last year’s thread and that’s the impression I got.

Still no pin…

still no pin as well

@mbarri That’s good to know, thanks!

I applied to AEM and I haven’t heard anything yet. Anyone else out there AEM? Any news? I’m dying over here…

@CorTransCHE that would’ve been past week. All throughout May it’s gonna be a mix. Still no PIN here either. I’m applying to CAS. My application was sent in for review more than 3 weeks ago I feel like. @yassgirl called CAS and they said it would be about 2-3 weeks after review that applicants find out. Hopefully I’ll get my PIN later today then…

@wonderfulpancake I applied AEM as well and still haven’t heard anything
