@jessicala a school like cornell would be thorough in closing out decisions, whether they are acceptances or denials. i think everyone waitlisted will get an email about their acceptance/denial to the uni
Hate the feeling of not having a closure… Yeah I surfed around forums and saw people getting into Cornell. And their profiles are basically on the same level as me… maybe it’s because I am international student???
@lemonsareyellow hope so…
honestly, this year in college admissions has been weird so i wouldn’t chalk it up to any one thing.
I’m sorry to @FiringSquad for calling you out, but @FiringSquad and others did state that CAS for Fall 2018 was full. I guess I shouldn’t confirm it unless I got the email and know for sure that CAS is not taking anyone in the fall, but it seems that only a select few received the notice. Sorry!
I was pretty much just saying that I don’t think oldfort would intentionally deceive us/I think they are correct. They have really helpful posts and I do think they are a relatively reliable source of information.
I am merely speculating but is it possible that they are handing out Spring 19 admits (as there are fewer people who ticked the spring box) while they are still processing the much larger waitlist for fall 18. Saying “CAS is full for Fall 18” could mean “we have many people on waitlist who dont want spring and can fill possible spots off waitlists for fall, and so we can only offer you spring admission”. I am merely speculating but I agree with @grundeis in the sense that “CAS being full” seems to be mathematically difficult to digest.
Exactly @boogiedad. The adcom told me that CAS will give waitlist decisions by mid-May, so is it possible that they are completing spring admits before releasing fall admits in bulk due to large numbers? I, again, speculate but still believe that there is a chance.
This is what Cornell says in the email:
“Please be advised that no spaces are available in the fall 2018 class.”
My son decided to reject the spring option because you miss out on becoming part of the freshman class… they will have an entire semester of experiences you will not share… move in days, fall homecoming, etc. It seems likely that you will have your graduation pushed a semester out… so you won’t graduate in May with that class? And for grad school, you will be off cycle as well. If you do manage to pick up 15 or so credits at a different college for fall… you have to make sure every single one of those credit will transfer or again, you are going to be stretching out your college costs. And that fall semester you are taking classes at whatever school… you aren’t going to be motivated to join clubs or get involved in that school as you are leaving in a semester. Seems like a much lesser college experience overall but I admit I am not sure.
I will put this out there for others reading this thread about Spring 2019. If you’re offered Spring admission it’s like you are being accepted off the waitlist, just later than others. This gives Cornell a chance to graduate their winter 2018 students to free up spots at the school classroom-wise and housing-wise. 6,684 applicants were put on their waitlist this year and they’ve already extended acceptances to 5,288 students.
Yes, it’s not the same to start a semester later but if you’re one of those students that have Cornell as their dream school, it may be worth the wait. Like I mentioned earlier, my son has roomed two different times with guys that started Spring term and they had no problems whatsoever integrating and making friends, joining frats, etc. Plus, if you have enough AP credits accepted you may not be as behind as you think.
Again, the article mentioned that the FYSA is expecting to enroll only 60 students for CALS and CAS so if you’re one of the 60, then that’s pretty great!
Good luck to all!
honestly, i don’t know and don’t care about speculations. the fact is that we all don’t have emails yet! let’s wait for those to come out and try to stay positive guys!
@lemonsareyellow Thank you for sharing your optimism! It’s so rare in waitlist threads.
anyone from CALS?
@FiringSquad “there are no spots available in Fall 2018 class” can may be mean something very different from “no one will get off the waitlist for Fall 2018” (read my post a few pages back). Not saying that everyone should get their hopes up, but linguistics and syntax here is important and there is a chance.
So basically the “chance” is that the 2018 admits have already been chosen and AFTER that, there are no more spots available…
So why wouldn’t they just notify the 2018 admits on Friday like the other schools? If they want to fill up their class ASAP, why wouldn’t they just call friday then?
(Alert: Speculation). @grundeis Or it could mean that they are still choosing whom to admit in Fall 2018 from the large number of peeps who possibly didn’t opt for spring, while the 30 spring peeps who are chosen are not being put in contention for fall. The mail I got from CAS read exactly the following:
You will receive an e-mail with the decision around mid-May. The committee is just starting to re-read the waitlist applications.
Sincerely,
Arts and Sciences Admissions
So lets see. CAS is also the largest school by size at Cornell that has historically admitted the largest numbers from waitlist. It can have more processing time than many smaller schools. Don’t get hopes high, but don’t get them low either. Even last year CAS waitlist closed end May, so them deciding to give decisions by “mid-May” may not be an indicator of them only taking spring admits (as someone on reddit claimed).
Wait, I’m sorry, WHAT is that email you received and when??
I checked both 2018 and 2019, and I got no email from Cornell whatsoever despite two LOCI’s and a counselor note…
@grundeis: Email sent to Cornell asking them when waitlist decisions will be released. (I ticked no for spring on the form). They replied with that email message.
CAS fall 2018 is closed now. There is a very slim chance that one or 2 spots may open up due to the summer melt (people getting off other higher ranking schools and turning Cornell down), but CAS adcom wouldn’t have put it in an email unless they were fairly certain. As a matter of fact, they may even be over enrolled.
I have posted it a few times already on this thread. If CAS is still your top choice, I would email adcom now to let them know you are interested in a spring 2019 spot before they are filled. Again, they are looking for people who are willing to commit now.
My brother (long time ago) received a letter from Cornell a week after he arrived at Tufts that they were offering him a spot for the spring. He took it and never looked back. My kids knew many students who started in spring or fall of following year, those students had all integrated very well into the community. They were not regarded differently than other students.
If you should decide to take the offer for spring, you could still graduate with your class. You could use your AP credits, take some classes at a local college and transfer those credits, or do a summer semester at Cornell (Ithaca is beautiful in the summer).
@oldfort It seems like your family always hits a jackpot with Cornell. First your daughter, then your other family member who got off 3 waitlists, and now your brother? What’s your secret haha
