COSMOS 2012 Waiting Board

@cosmogony Yeah, it’s much harder to get into grad school at a college if you already went there for undergrad- at least that’s what I’ve heard. UCSD’s campus is GORGEOUS. It’s probably one of the nicest campuses out of all the UCs.

For EPGY, the results are released one month after apps are due… I wish COSMOS was that way. Then we would be getting our results right now! :]

Oh, which campus do you guys think is the nicest out of all of the UC’s? Would it be UCSD? I’ve heard UCSC is too, but I’ve never been there. I’ve also heard it was hilly, which is undesirable. Same reason why I don’t like the Berkeley campus… because of the steep walks.

UCSC is nice, but it’s kind of in the middle of NOWHERE, LOL. I mean, if that’s your thing then yeah. But I think UCSD probably has the nicest campus… UCD is pretty nice too though! :]

Yes, I wanted to mention UCD, but I wasn’t sure because that’s the only UC I’ve really truly explored (just because it’s so close) so I know how beautiful the arboretum is, but my standards are really low in the category of campuses haha

We always pass by Santa Cruz whenever we take long drives somewhere but we never stop there haha That further proves your point. XD Plus, there are about as many hobos in SC as there are in Berkeley so I’ve pretty much ruled out UCSC.

UCSD has a really nice campus but I’m absolutely in love with Berkeley’s architecture… everything looks like a castle! The parts of UCI that I’ve seen (I’ve only been there a couple of times for specific events so I haven’t been able to tour or anything) are kind of bleghh. I mean, it’s nice, but nothing special, IMO.

UCSC- no offense to them, but the campus is filled with hippies and treehugger type people. I don’t know, it’s a little too weird for me. :D

The closest UC to me is probably UCI or UCLA- both mehhhh. UCI, in a suburb, isn’t really that exciting or beautiful. UCLA in downtown… the air there smells so bad. :P

@missiris - Trust me, Irvine is possibly the most boring city ever.
I mean it’s great because there are fairly good schools, everything is clean, low crime rate, etc. But it is seriously sooo dull. (More reasons I don’t really want to go to UCI. MUST GET OUT OF HERE.)

@vivng6991 Do you live near Irvine? I live probably 20 minutes away from there. LOL and yeah it is boring. Too many Asians there, LOL. (UCI’s “affectionate” nickname is the University of Chinese Immigrants… :P)

I live IN Irvine. Hahaha I’m Asian and I can probably count on one hand the number of ‘white’ people I’m friends with… Okay exaggerating a bit, but it’s ridiculous.

Same here. I live in Fullerton. There’s a total of 3 people out of 35 in my math class- including my teacher. Just for an example. In my chem class, the only white person is my teacher. :]

I’m surprised no one mentioned the freaking BEAUTIFUL campus of UCSB haha

@nicole Yeah, UCSB is pretty too… but like UCI, it’s in the suburbs, hence it’s a little blah.

Isn’t UCSB suppose to be a big party school because all of the students live off-campus, and it’s in a beach community?

Yeah, UCSB is considered a party school. But you get what you make of it and all that.

@cosmo Housing in La Jolla? Freaking ridiculous. An apartment is like half a mil. Well okay I’m over exaggerating but yeah, its quite pricey compared to all the other places in SD.
I’ve been to UCI and SDSU. Nothing compares to UCSD. I absolutely love it there; it’s so welcoming…Then again, UCSD is one of the more anti-social colleges. I like UCI however, its really out doorsy. I mean SD is too but its literally all trees over there.

@afourally You wouldn’t like UCSC… it’s pretty much a rain forest there!
If I were to decide to attend UCSD (if accepted of course), would it be a better option to live in dorms instead of an apartment then? I dunno… I really like the environment of UCSD. I’m a social person, but I’m not too big on parties haha Plus I’m a sucker for modern architecture! I live only 45 minutes from Berkeley but I don’t like the environment there… or the old architecture style. Maybe that’s the same reason why I don’t like Ivies. (Of course there are some other reasons behind my Ivy-avoidance idiosyncrasy.)

I will answer everyone’s questions later, but I would just to say to cosmogony, CHEME RULES! :D

Isn’t it that at UCSD freshmen have to stay in the dorms?

@cosmo Upper and lower San Diego have the priciest (is that even a word…) housing. I live in lower San Diego (closer to the Border) and so its like a 30 minute drive from ucsd. My cousin goes to ucsd and she lives in John Muir which is apparently the best college there. They have the easiest GE’s and the best food, however, everyone wants to be in it, thus making it the most difficult to get in. You’re a junior, right?

@Nicole Nahhh. I believe it only works that way if you’re from out of city.

Really? My friend lived about 45 minutes away, and she apparently had to use the dorms.
