@Paradox: oh thats nice =) Which uni are you in then?

Harvard - High Reach
Columbia - Reach
Cornell - Reach
Michigan - High Match
UT Austin - High Match
Carnegie Mellon - High Match
UIUC - Low Match
Virginia Tech - Low Match

Don’t know enough about UC system to comment.

hi logan.

i shall get straight to the point. ur app is below average as compared to an average indian applicant. ur scores are bad and nothing stands out. unless ur essays are just mind boggling u will not get into the best places. you also happen to be a prestige seeker which will be bad for u since u probably wont get iinto a college that has too much of it.

judging by what u have stated above, here is my opinion:

Harvard- (hahahah) rejected
Columbia- rejected
Cornell- rejected

Carnegie Mellon- waitlisted/rejected
UT Austin- accepted/waitlisted
UM Ann Arbor- dunno…depends on when u applied coz they are rolling
UIllinois Urbana Champaign- accepted

(the the ucs are in a huge financial crisis and ur not applying for aid ull probably get into all but t is suggested to not attend one of the ucs this year/next year)
UC Berkeley- maybe waitlisted
UC LA- look up
UC Irvine- accepted

Virginia Tech- accepted/waitlisted

cr_freak, if you can’t encourage him, atleast do NOT discourage.

aww… im sorry for being honest logan. these guys will very diplomatically tell u to that “u can never say” and “u have a chance” and get ur hopes up… but the fact is that its no point being unrealistic. i cannot convince u not to apply to places like harvard but atleast when u get that rejection letter u wont feel so bad. seriously… life isnt about going to the “most prestigious” college undergad. its about being happy… and there are other ways of being happy. im not saying ur a bad person, just a bad candidate for colleges like harvard, columbia or even cornell .Dont take anything to heart, im just being objective. my aim here is not to foster a “close knit community” like a lot of colleges advertise on their websites. im here to help. and lieing to someone so that they dont feel bad temporarily is not helping. The fact that u put up this thread on a wesite filled with complete strangers means that u want to know the truth otherwise u can just ask ur parents and like good indian parents will tell you that u are the best and can get in anyhwhere if u work hard. I’m not ur parent.

PS. dont get worked up about college. not worth it. college is what u make of it. u can go to dartmouth and be sad (look at a thread “message for 2014rs”) and u can goto syracuse university and have the time of your life.

cheers.

thanks a lot cr_freak. Appreciate it. No sarcasm =)
Well, fortunately or not, ive already applied and now I can only get letters… so ill hope for the best…?

OK lemme elaborate a little more on my ECs

Ive won Best Speaker in each and every speaking (debate + elocution) competition I could lay my hands on from Grade 8 to Grade 10. In IB, i took on to MUNs where I took part in 4-5 MUNs and won Best Delegate in almost all. Due to this I was elected to attend GYLC from my school, at USA (where I also did a few campus tours). I was elected as the President in my school’s MUN, where I was the Prez. of the G8 (toughest committee). For this, I’ve even come in the newspaper, and my principle’s written a special reco for me.

Coming to Karate, I’ve been a Black Belt for 7 years now, and I am a volunteering Instructor at my Dojo (skl from where I got my Black Belt). Ive also participated in state-level competitions. I’ve also dony the IAYP and other stuff

Music… Ive been playing the Drums since 2008 and i’m in a band now. I’ve made drum covers on YouTube (which i obv. din put in my apps… lol). I also sing a lot, participating in many many competitions and lead singer in the school choir

coming to the comp. … Ive done an in-depth training in Turbo C++ in my skl in Grade 8 (after which i took Tech. Drawing which i need for engg.). I also learnt HTML through a friend. I used my knowledge of HTML to create a huge programme online for a company of fuel assessment (no more details!) for which ive got a reco.

Academics… my grade 10 official transcript shows a 99% in TD, 96% in Math, and 88% Sci Avg. (90+ in Chem, Bio and 80+ in Phy) and a 93% overall - top 1% in India. For this, I was given recognition by the rotary club and another club. I took part and won a merit in a competition by IIT Mumbai, where only selected students were allowed to participate. In IB, ive taken a dreaded course (PCM HL) where my expected predicted grade is a 777 (i have no idea… its just a strong feeling after talking to teachers). Ive also done my Extended Essay in maths (ive stayed back till 6PM in my school for MONTHS and still doing so) which I believe is the toughest… and my teacher believes I can get an A.

Volunteer Activities… Ive taken part in SO many. I was the prez. of a student run initiative which became so popular I was invited to a meeting with the governor of my state. While i was prez. i led many many initiatives and i even cleaned roads myself. During my vacations i went to a skl in NDelhi where i taught underpriv. children. – all this besides the basic Social Service our school forced everyone to do. When the 26/11 attacks took place, I led a candlelight march I thought of myself, and we recited poems that I wrote myself (wrote in essay). I was invited by the police and an elderly association to repeat the whole procession with slight media coverage in a local park. I’m the head of the young-govt. in my community and ive made many changes to it.

Essay… not revealing too much… I wrote about my mentor who was my grandfather. I wrote about how he influenced many important decisions in my life, and in that sense i elaborated on many of my significant events and problems that I can solve as an Engineer (i connected it r. well :P)

Recos I have from my Math, Phy teacher at IB which is great coz i have an awesome relationship with them. Also, my principal from my old school, my TDA teacher (open), my faculty advisor at GYLC (open) and a few other things. I also mentioned an engineering idea that I have, and how I attempt to solve it (not in a very elaborate way… haha)

Indians doing the ICSE and IB students in general - you know how tough it is to do so many things with that kind of a curriculum.

PHEW! that felt good. Well… tbh… i dunno if im a right candidate or not - but i know im not a nerd. In the sense, i work to understand and not to mug up, which is the main reason why im applying to the US. But, as ppl say, if i get into Harvard and I’ll have to mug up just to stay in touch with my colleagues, i’d rather pass at Harvard, and join smwer else. What I mean to say, is that I’m happy with whichever uni i get into (already got 1 acceptance) and I hope I get into the best. Harvard was my childhood dream so i still applied to it… else id spend my life wondering.

now thats what im talkin about ! thats what u shud have put up in the beginning man !

ur black belt is seriously awesome ! thats goona be a huuuge plus for u. the rest is good, and yes, above average so heres my new evaluation.

Harvard- depends on ur essay. if it clicks then yeah ur in.
Columbia- look up.
Cornell- waitlisted. i hope u elaborated on ur website for these guys.

Carnegie Mellon- accepted
UT Austin- accepted
UM Ann Arbor- accepted unless u applied realy late in which case i dont know
UIllinois Urbana Champaign- accepted

(the the ucs are in a huge financial crisis and ur not applying for aid ull probably get into all but t is suggested to not attend one of the ucs this year/next year)
UC Berkeley- accepted/waitlisted
UC LA- look up
UC Irvine- accepted

Virginia Tech- accepted

im sorry if i “dissapointed” you earlier. i just dint know enough. as i said… i was just judging u on what u posted.

good luck ! and pm me where u get in ;)

I can see you getting into UM- Ann Arbor and UC Irvine.
The rest are low reaches, I’d say.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/843824-chance-me-ill-chance-you-too.html

oxolojo i dont get this “chance me ill chance u too” thing… if u know enough to chance other people why cant u chance urself ? its like either u know enough and ur just an attention seeking fool who wants to hear praises from others or u dont know enough (which is why ur asking others to help u) and will give other ppl a completely arbitrary and useless evaluation.

HAHAHAH! thanks so much cr_freak!

Its true what they say about strict coaches - hurts when they criticize, but that praise at the end always feels like gold xD. I feel great now!

And im considering doing SAT MAT2C in Jan and send rush scores… would you concur?

well i think you should take math 2 and something else…world history or lit, if u think u can still prepare… wont u need another one for harvard anyway ? and dont rush ur scores to all the colleges first find out if they accept rushing most dont and theyll tell u to send them in regularly. they should reach on time so i dont think thatll be a problem.

ive done Physics (740)
should i redo?

Considering that you’re international, a lot depends on whether or not you apply for aid. Colleges are glad to accept internationals, as long as they’re willing to pay their way through entirely. Of course, your standardized tests will hurt. You didn’t really expand much on your ECs - have you won any specific honors in those besides your MUN award? What kind of art so you do? etc. I’m going to assume you didn’t apply for aid anywhere.

Harvard - High reach
Columbia - High reach
Cornell - Reach

Carnegie Mellon - Reach
UT Austin - Low reach?
UM Ann Arbor - Reach (Their average in-state test scores are higher than yours - but GPA is huge for Michigan, so I don’t know. Also depends on when you applied.)
UIllinois Urbana Champaign - Low reach

UC Berkeley - Reach
UC LA - Reach
UC Irvine - No clue

Virginia Tech - No clue

Good luck!

Is there a way i can edit this to the 1st post?

physics is fine so is chem… i dont think u shud redo math… the colleges will look at best 2 scores anyway… only harvard sees 3 and for them one 700 wont keep u out… so i think itll be a waste of time to retake. this year a guy from our school got in ea to yale with a 680 phy and 720 math 2 withb 2230 sat 1… so ur sat 2 is fine

but my SAT 1 is a 2050… so…

OK fine. Thanks. I don’t really think I have that kinda time anyway (IB X_X). I’ll see what I can do

freak, what are you studying or where did you study?
just curious.

Does receiving an invitation letter from Harvard increase chances of admission? Does Harvard send out many invitations?

I’ve received invitations from Harvard; once by mail, once by e-mail. I’m a student from Kerala, India. I never fancied my chances at Harvard or any other top US universities till I received the letter from Harvard. Can someone tell me if I have a real chance of getting in.

haha I like this. Very refreshing. Sometimes even I enjoying hearing a good ‘eff you’ directed towards myself. Trust me here, being lied to and given false hope is far far worse; much better to hear that you aren’t good enough before the rejections arrive.
