Do the parent and student groups break for lunch at the same time together?

I’d like to know too, peacemkr59, if at all during the orientation that the students meet up with the parents.

I also have a question about a Fall class if anyone knows. CGS-2100C Computer Fundatmentals for Business, there are 2 types of classes, a Lecture and a Laboratory. Which one is for FTIC freshmen? They both have the same course number.

Thanks knightforum, that’s exactly what I wanted to know! They must have a lot of computers if everyone uses them at the same time!

Thanks knightforum! I was really curious about the way orientation played out.

What does “Staff” mean under instructor in the course look-up?

“Staff” means they haven’t assigned a teacher yet. Sometimes when there are multiple sections of a class, like Calc I for example, there are dozens of teachers. So … you have to keep looking back to see who will be teaching that class. Sometimes it’ll say staff all the way to the first day of class.

zebes

When a class has the letter C after it…like CGS2100C it means that it also has a lab or discussion section that you have also have to sign up for. Since it is two sections (one lecture and one discussion/lab) you will need to input TWO class numbers(one lecture and one lab). There is ONE final grade given for both sections together (so if you do better in lab than lecture it call pull up the other part of your grade, or the opposite). Some classes that routinely use this are CGS, Stats classes, some chemistry classes among others. Both sections are ONE class.

If you have a class that number ends in L as in CHM 2046L. You also must sign up for both lecture and lab sections (two separate class numbers) BUT these both have completely separate grades. You will get a final grade for the lecture, worth 3 credits and and final grade for the lab, worth 1 credit (usually). You can sign up for the lecture and/or the lab separately and do not need to take them together (if you don’t pass lecture but do pass the lab, you only need to repeat the lab).

On the first day of orientation students and parents have lunch separately. However, there is a parent/student meet-up time before dinner on the first day for about 10 minutes, then everyone goes their separate way again.
On the second day, parents and students can eat together at lunch.

Seiclan, so I want to take a stats class in the fall that ends in a C. The only meeting time is for an hour on fridays. Does that mean that is one part and I have to find the other? It’s kind of confusing.

Rachel - what is the course number? I will look it up for you. It may be that the discussion sections are already filled. Did you look at all the available sections and not just the open ones? If there is a C then it has another component that you MUST have.

I don’t know which STATS class you are looking at Rachel. Both the intro to STATS classes that have a C (1060C AND 2014C) have lots of choices on lots of days.

Seiclan it is 2014C but I figured it out, some say discussion some say lecture. I’m glad you mentioned that I would never have noticed! Why do they seperate them like that?

Rachel - My daughter is taking that class this fall too. She is signed up for the M/W lecture (LOVE that it is NOT Friday!) from 11:30 am -12:20pm w/Cutchins and the discussion section on thursdays, 10:30am -11:20 (no teacher assigned to the discussion sections yet).

Yeah! Mine is similar but different times I have Cutchins for MW but staff for the other part. Shouldn’t they have the same teacher for all parts?

No, they don’t have the same teacher for the discussion sections. The discussion sections are usually taught by teaching assistants/grad students.

This may sound student, but what is the difference between a discussion and lecture class? Aside from the obvious meaning of the words… Are both required?

If it is a class thats course number ends in the letter C, then there is a mandatory lecture AND discussion section of the class. The lecture is taught by a professor and can be very large (up to 450 people sometimes) but the discussion section is a small group, usually around 30 students, and is taught by a Teaching Assistant (frequently a graduate student in the field). The discussion section goes more into depth what is covered in class and is supposed to add clarity. It is required.

Has anyone received financial aid for summer B yet?

knightforum, I was at the parent’s orientation yesterday and was told that financial aid will be applied soon after the add/drop deadline, which is July 2. Payment is due by July 10.

JerseyShoreMom- How did orientation go? What classes did your daughter decide on?
