Crazy Confidential Kids or...not?

This board is starting to scare me. a lot.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like its impossible to get into NYU now with a 3.8 GPA, 1900 SAT score, and 660 and 700 SAT II scores. I mean I know how competitive NYU is getting, but a lot of the stats that are shared on this board is Ivy-League material (1400+ SAT) and I know, because I applied ED to Columbia. And before I was introduced to this site, I was equally aware of how competitive NYU is but never this competitive. I mean the average SAT score it says in U.S News is 1210-1410 and my score Verbal and Math combined is within this range. I've done lots of EC's and have taken the most rigorous courses my school has to offer and am considered top 15% of my class. Is it that the people on College Confidential are just that elite 10% or are most of the 33,000 applicants this crazy also. Please tell me, because this is freaking me out.

ahahahhhaa.....i also thought that at first, but dont worry, these really are the elite. Only the nerds are the type to go online and talk with fellow nerds whether theyre gonna get it in or not. Believe me, NYU accepts people with much lower GPAs and SATs then those posted on this site. I know many people who have gotten in from my school with SATs under 1300, and A-/B+ averages. If i were you I wouldnt worry so much

It's not impossible but it's not certain either. Those average SAT scores you have are low. NYU's averages are between 1310-1450. Average h/s gpa 3.63 u/w. 72% of accepted students are in the top 10% of their graduating class. The quality of NYU applicants has increased dramatically in recent years so it's not unusual for many very qualified students to be rejected. When the acceptance rate is so selective, this isn't unusual. Don't freak out too much but don't count on it as a definite either. Good luck.

All of my friends that go to NYU did not have good GPA's and had decent SAT scores. It really is a CC thing...I think. Obviously the applicants and those accepted are well qualified for NYU...but CC kids definitely are at the higher end of the spectrum.

It also depends on which school you are applying to. At my school you can view the statistics of the kids who applied to which schools and what not. So it shows everyone who applies to NYU all their stats and stuff (you don't see their name), but there were 2 kids accepted into NYU last year from my school one for film and tv the other for dance. I know them both personally, thats how I knew it was them...but their stats were the 2 lowest out of all the other kids from my school who applied, yet they were the only 2 to get in.

So depending on your program, you might be able to get by with so-so stats if you go for arts related stuff! We're allowed to have bad grades! But its not like they had bad grades..they had about 3.4-3.6GPA's

We had 2 kids go to CAS from our school last year. Both B+/A- kids whith SATs in the mid to low 1300s. The A students with SATs in the 1400s mostly applied to Ivies or little Ivies or schools like UChicago or Washington U in St. Louis, at least on the ED round. I think CC makes students think they can't get in to schools they CAN get into. Of course it is such a C---shoot because one student got into Princeton and rejected from Vanderbilt, so who knows.Since NYU is unique in its location, there will always be students who want NYU even if they could get into Cornell or Penn.

I love you for posting this. I sincerely hope you and I (fall in-range people) get in here.

I so totally agree with what you are saying. Obviously, we on CC are the ones most concerned with getting into our dream college, etc and this most likely has translated into higher test scores, grades, etc. Ironically, we're probably the kids who really don't need to be worrying about getting in. I have thought this especially when looking at the NYU Discussion.

wow yea.
reading this board made me feel like i totally did not deserve to get into nyu as far as grades go.

Most NYU kids are 1400 (CAS & Stern) average ..
Especially if youre going for Stern, you need to have really good stats, thats partially why.

Some schools under NYU are pretty easy like Steinhardt.

this post is exactly what i've been thinking.

i knew nyu was hard to get into, but not as hard as georgetown, northwestern.. any of those top 20 schools. maybe stern because its mostly number oriented..

my gpa is higher than avg but my sat is right in the middle 50% (math and verbal).. i'm applying to cas and now everyone here on the nyu forum at cc is saying the avg for cas is 1400. is this really true? if so, why is the avg that nyu says is 1310-1450? is it because that statistic includes GSP (where some of the students may have lower SAT scores)?

the people who i know that go to nyu (who are sophomores and juniors so its not like they applied a long time ago) got around 1300-1350 and like a 3.6 GPA.

cas is pretty hard to get into

cas = SAT 1300 + 3.7+ gpa
gsp = SAT 1200's + less than 3.7

ok so i got into cas with a 1910 SAT. (that's about a 1280 regular) and my grades were mostly Bs in honors classes.
i really think its about the ECs

strange.....

the stats for nyu has gone up A LOT
the admissions officer came to my school and they were like, "errr" when this kid asked if he had a good chance with a 1350 sat because the average was pretty much a 1400

There are kids with SATs in the 1200, 1300s and 1400s. The adcoms visiting schools are going to put it "high" to encourage the best students to apply, since that is who they prefer. Last year two kids from our high school went to NYU and they were both B+ students with SATs in the low to mid 1300s. I just got accepted with a 2190 and a 3.6 (all honors and APs). I love NYU, I didn't want to go anywhere else, but we just got 3 kids into Duke early with lower SATs, slightly higher GPAs but 2 out of the 3 were not even taking Calc. Same with Dartmouth -we just got 3 in early and only one was taking AP Calc. One hadn't taken any AP science except an environmental course but she is a great humanities student. I think CC is scarier than what happens in real life!

catherine you are right about nyu applicants... i'm one of those ED NYU / 1400 score kids, and i don't know where else i could have gotten in but i wanted to go to nyu.

but catherine, is that with Stern?
I mean the reason why NYU has this aura of difficulty around it is because of Stern, and there are sooo many applicants for Stern. Stern is much much harder.

question...

i know people are saying the avg sat is 1400... but is it really? do you guys have info from the admissions office at nyu from the stats of '09?

(just wondering since i am one of those that score in the middle of the middle 50%... 1370 old but 3.8uw/4.5w)

Chibifry, you may be right and Stern has really high stats. I didn't apply to Stern so I don't know. But clearly the majority of people at NYU rae not at Stern, so I guess when people post "difficulty" they should say which school they are applying to.
