Hi guys! I am trying to decide between two great opportunities and am looking for some advice. I have been accepted to the Creighton honors program and Loyola Chicago with similar financial aid packages and merit scholarships. I am unsure which to attend and was looking for some insight on anyone who had experience with either school. I have never visited either, so information about campus and city life would definitely be appreciated!
What do you plan on majoring in?
I can tell you about Creighton, but not much about Loyola (except that they are in the Missouri Valley conference for basketball).
If you plan on majoring in pre-law, pre-med, or business: Creighton is a great choice. If you are majoring in anything else, Creighton can still provide a quality education, but it is not as spectacular as the previously mentioned programs.
If sports plays into your decision, Creighton has good basketball and volleyball programs, but there is no football team (but I don’t believe Loyola has one either).
City life? Omaha is actually pretty nice. It’s big, with plenty of options for most things (food/entertainment/etc.), without the constant cramping of Chicago. Creighton has a pretty campus, though it is kind of cramped into downtown Omaha though.
Good luck with your decision!
Two very fine Jesuit schools, congratulations.
LUC has strong programs in business and nursing among others. Business school grads are well thought of in Chicago. Oh, and there it is…Chicago. If you like city living, Chicago is awsome and hard to beat. The LUC lakeshore campus, where all freshmen and sophomores live, is right on Lake Michigan and is beautiful. LUC is not known for sports, although the men’s vollyball team IS the reigning NCAA champion.
So I would suggest that if you want an urban school, LUC would probably make you very happy.
I have not been to Creighton but thought that the previous post did a fine job of giving me a good picture of the school.
I’d go with Loyola, for the city of Chicago and its opportunities - unless you’re big sports fan
I think part of the decision should be based on size, and this is why I say that: You have been accepted into the Honors Program at Creighton, which, as you know, is highly competitive.
The Honors Program means you will dorm with 47 other Honors Students, and take a specialized curriculum. So, if you want smaller classes and want a “big school made smaller”, that should be a heavy consideration.
If, on the other hand, you don’t want small classes, then don’t choose Creighton, or decline the Honors Program offer.
But the HP is also great, since you get priority registration over everyone else–huge advantage, IMO.
Both very nice Jesuit schools.
If you happen to be pre-med, I think Creighton has one of the finest pre-med programs in the country.
Good luck!
You got Honors at Creighton but NOT at Loyola?
(If so, that changes things a bit then)
Thank you all for your responses! RIght now, I am currently a communications major but will most likely change over the course of four years.
@MYOS1634 I missed the deadline for the LUC honors program, if I went there I would do my best to transfer in.
@ColdinMinny I know what an amazing sense of community the HP would provide, I’m just a little worried about being in Omaha as opposed to being in Chicago.
@knightcub do you attend LUC?? You gave great insight thank you so much!
@wonderfulreads did you attend Creighton? Thank you, too, for your great insight!
I’m also curious about the social life for both schools, if anyone can give insight. Obviously it’s not a deciding factor, but it is college and I would like to have the opportunity to go out!
Can you email the HP’s director and ask whether your application can be considered? State you’ve been admitted, got Honors College at the other colleges, but LUC is your first choice except for this, and here are your stats,… Attach the essays, etc.
Most Jesuit colleges start slow socially, except maybe BC, because they are not football schools that engender instant ferver. The second semester is when many ( most?) kids find their footing and start to find their niche.
I have a close relative currently attending LUC and can unequivocally say that she has found her personal little slice of heaven in Chicago. Her roommate is a communications major and loves LUC as well. LUC just completed, ahead of schedule, a $500 million capital campaign. The new dorms, classrooms, business school, and administrative buildings are incredible. Check out the “IC” which is rated a top 10 college library in the entire nation. LUC also has the largest undergrad enrollment of all Jesuit college in the US, but does not feel like a large college. LUC has overcome it’s traditional commuter college status now that they have the room to require all freshman and sophomore students to live in LUC housing the past 10 years or so. I really belive that LUC is one of the truely ascending universities in the country and will continue to improve and grow for many years to come.
Ps. Do you like food? Chicago is one of the great food cities in the country.
@MYOS1634 I did email the HP and asked if my application could be considered – am waiting to hear back!
@knightcub thank you for your help! I am very interested in LUC, and was a little concerned about its “commuter college” reputation but that helped clear things up! And yes of course I love food - Chicago and all it has to offer is a major plus!
Keeping my fingers crossed
