What do you think of the Cromwell dorm, I got placed in it and want to know what its like.

I lived there last year and loved it. I know the majority of the people are probably pretty annoyed they got put in Cromwell but seriously, I could not even imagine living in the Towers. Not having to use a communal bathroom was so nice and my floor really bonded. The rooms are smaller and I do believe the floors are smaller so everyone got to know everyone (unlike the towers- one of my best friends said she never even talked to half of her floor in Wolfe). We had a lot of floor movie and take-out nights, and a bunch of the guys often played video games in the lounge. It was usually quieter in Cromwell, which was great when you wanted to study or sleep in. Oh, and you get REAL windows that open a lot more than the teeny tiny ones in the towers. If you have any specific questions ask!

Thanks! What would you recommend bringing for the cromwell bathrooms? (Do we need our own shower curtains, cleaning supplies, etc.)

I would recommend cleaning supplies, at least 2 shower curtains (3 if you want to replace the one provided for the shower and I would recommend plastic rather than cloth), and tension rods and rings for which to hang the curtains. You also might want to get a mat or something for the shower and/or toilet areas. You will also need toilet paper and paper dixie cups (or plastic cups). Those were really the only necessities we used but other people brought more decoration type stuff too.

What is the bathroom like? Is there more than one shower, toliet, sink?

There’s one shower, one toilet, one big mirror and 2 sinks. The toilet and shower are on either sides of the bathroom and the sinks are in the middle.

Is there any random items that I should bring, like something that you would never think of bringing, but them get there and realize that you need it.

Hmmmm I can’t remember anything that I needed to get after I had moved in… just remember you have to use those special light bulbs (bring a floor lamp for Cromwell). They’re the energy saving ones that are swirly lol. The college doesn’t allow halogen lamps. I brought a vacuum with me too and it was actually quite useful. Also be sure to bring trash bags, laundry detergent and dryer sheets (you can’t use those new 3-in-1 sheets), rainboots/strong umbrella. Make sure you have your ethernet cord, all necessary cables with your tv. For Cromwell be sure to bring lots of toilet paper and cleaning supplies!!! Hand towels would also be good cause there’s no towel dispensers in Cromwell lol.

Bring lots of surge protectors!!! (or at least 2 lol)

That’s all I can think of now, if I think of anything else I’ll post it.

Will we need to bring fans for the room? And is one enough, or should we each have one?

DEFINITELY BRING FANS… it gets just a teensy hot in the rooms lol. One will be good as long as it is big enough (and reaches the top bunk, if you are indeed bunking beds). A great thing about Cromwell is that the windows are considerably larger than the ones in Travers/Wolfe so you are able to open them more.

Are they blinds or shades on the windows?

There are blinds

thanks for all your help, can you suggest the best way to lay the furniture out in the room? and do have any pictures of what cromwell looks like on the inside because I wasn’t in it and don’t know what to expect at all.

honestly the best layout will depend on your room. my roommate and I could not find a way to have our beds unbunked due to the positions of the doors and cable/internet jacks. with that said a lot of people were able to unbunk their beds, and yes I do have pics of my room

HazelEyez - I appreciate all the info you have shared so far about Cromwell. I have some added questions.

Do the wardrobes go all the way up to the ceiling? I assume not and am wondering how much space (if any) is above them to store things. Will those large plastic covered storage containers fit above the wardrobes?

About how wide are the wardrobes? Much different than the width of a towers closet?

Can the 3 high drawer unit that is in the wardrobe come out and fit in the room to allow more space for hanging clothes? (And hopefully also unbunk beds)

You mentioned that you had to bunk your beds to fit things in given the layout of the doors/ethernet cable. Do most Cromwell rooms allow the beds to be unbunked??

In the bathroom is there any storage space for the suitemates to store things? Like the paper towels and TP they have to bring? Any shelves or cabinets or undersink storage space?

I saw that beds cannot be lofted. Does TCNJ allow those risers that they sell at BBB that lift the bed just a few inches? Seems like that added space can come in handy at Cromwell.

How do most suitmates divide bathroom duty/supplies? Ideas on what works best is appreciated.

I would like to see the photos of room layouts in Cromwell. If I private message you my email address, would you email them to me or maybe you can post them on the TCNJ Class of 2014 facebook page. Someone posted pics of rooms in the Tower there to show layout options, but none of the pictures show occupied Cromwell rooms.

What is the best carpet size for Cromwell?

I know one bed has drawers under it, the other does not. Do roomates share the space under each bed (1 drawer and 1/2 the empty underbed space each) or do roommates typically take one bed and “own” the space under it – either drawers or the empty space? Curious what typically occurs.

Sorry for all the questions…the more I thought about it the more I had! Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi!

No the wardrobes do not go all the way to the ceiling. You can store some stuff on top of them but the college has a rule about stuff being at least 2 inches or so from the ceiling (this includes posters hung on the walls). Therefore you probably won’t be able to put the bins on top of them.

I didn’t really ever look at the closets in the towers too well but if I had to guess I’d say the wardrobes in Cromwell are not as wide. The closets in the towers are built into the wall. I was able to fit a bin 23 1/2 in. long on the floor of my closet and still had almost a foot left.

Yes the dresser can come out of the closet. My roommate and I took ours out. However, I’m not sure if there’d be enough room for it outside the closet if the beds are unbunked (our suitemates had unbunked beds and kept their dressers in their closets). The thing with Cromwell is that the dimensions of the rooms vary, so while it might be possible to do one thing in one room, it may not be possible to do it in another.

I would say the majority of the people on my floor had unbunked beds. My roommate and I were in the room that had two doors: one to the hallway and one to the bathroom (the other 2 rooms in a suite only have one door). Given the position of these doors and the location of the cables we could not come up with a feasable layout with unbunked beds. We probably could have pulled it off if we blocked half the door to the bathroom lol but it wasn’t worth it to either of us.

There are shelves underneath the sinks.

No bed risers allowed. The top bunk is actually higher than the bottom bunk (when unbunked) so that allows for some storage space.

At the beginning of the year they make everyone create a contract with his/her roommate that they both must sign and hang in the room. They will have to agree on general “rules” for the room (i.e. how many guests at a time, what time guests must leave on certain nights, etc.). Everyone in Cromwell must also draw up a contract with their suitemates. We just rotated the duty of cleaning the bathroom (in other words, my roommate and I were responsible every 3 weeks for cleaning it). As far as supplies we all just showed up with a ton of stuff at the beginning and then went by the honor system. we trusted that everyone would do their part and we did.

I’m going to try to post my pics today. I don’t have a lot of pics but I’ll try to post what I can to give you some kind of idea.

If you are referring to a carpet that will cover the entire floor it may be a little difficult without having the room’s dimensions. The rooms are rectangular in size if that would help lol. The TCNJ site has the rooms listed as being 10’ x 16.5’ so something around there might work.

My roommate and I each took one full drawer under the bottom bunk (there are 2 separate drawers). Our suitemates (I believe) only took the space that was under their own bed. So whomever got the bottom bunk got both drawers.

Hope that helps!

Really appreciate your responses. Since we cannot get into Cromwell before move in day your info is soo helpful. Curious if you have ever seen/think the beds can be unbunked and placed in an “L shape” (one along the window and one across the wall from the door to the bathroom).

I didn’t live in Cromwell, but remembering my friends’ rooms, I don’t think there is enough space to do that.

yeah i don’t think anyone on my floor had it like that. the rooms may not be long enough on the one side for the bed. also, our heaters were on the wall with the windows so even if we could have fit a bed there we’d block the heaters.

Interersting because one of the photos of an empty Cromwell room on FB made it look like the beds were able to fit into an L shape.
